2 THE IMPORTANCE OF A TRIED AND TESTED PROBIOTIC SUPPLEMENT When choosing a probiotic supplement, the viability and potency must be considered to ensure the supplement is efficacious and value for money. Bacteria that are to be used for bowel flora supplementation require certain clearly definable properties in order to be effective: They must belong to a strain that can survive the passage through the stomach acid - a hazard that kills most bacteria. They should be able to grow in the presence of bile, which is another demanding requirement. Upon reaching the lower intestine they must be able to implant there and multiply as an on-going population. The ability to implant is related to the strain s ability to adhere to the wall of the intestines. The survival in sufficient numbers of the strains of probiotics used in Nutrigold s Pro-otic range have been investigated in a rigorous range of tests simulating the harsh environment of the upper digestive tract. These test areas include: 1. Tolerance of Pro-otic strains to acidic conditions, simulating the acid environment of the stomach, for up to 1.5 hours. 2. Resistance of Pro-otic strains to pepsin, the principal proteolytic enzyme found in gastric acid. 3. Exposure of Pro-otic strains to different concentrations of bile acids and pancreatin, a mixture of several digestive enzymes including amylase, lipase and protease, to mimic conditions in the upper intestinal tract. Bile has bactericidal action so probiotic strains must survive when exposed to bile acids to ensure the probiotic supplement remains viable and not just a waste of money. The in vitro tests show that L. acidophilus CUL-6 strain used in the Nutrigold Pro-otic is highly resistant to acid conditions even after 1.5 hours exposure to acidified (ph2.5). This Lactobacillus strain is also able to survive in the presence of bile acids, pepsin and pancreatin (Figure. 1). The number of viable organisms in each of the four tests that mimic the conditions found in the digestive tract remained the same as the controls. *Our new Mega Strength Pro-otic is as stated, lactose free and stable for 24 months at normal ambient room temperature. However, the current 3.5 billion Pro-otic (NC3, NC9) products may contain traces of lactose so are not considered vegan. However the next batch is estimated to arrive during October/November 211 which will be lactose free and suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.
