Seems like you are getting a better deal from Company A, right? The correct answer is that it all depends on what the original margin of these products was. If you are interested in maximizing your profitability, the key factor in any discount offer is not the discount amount but the original margin offered by that product. Let s compare the difference between a 40% margin extract (Extract A) and a 50% margin extract (which happens to be the margin that Herb Pharm offers). If you sell them for $10 each, you make $4.00 margin on Extract A and $5.00 on Herb Pharm. Now Extract A comes in and offers a 20% off discount. If the store still sells it for $10, then the store achieves a $5.20 margin. When Herb Pharm comes in and offers a 10% off discount, and the store still sells the Herb Pharm extract for $10, then the store profits with a $5.50 margin.
