It is synthesized in the body from L-arginine. In the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism (August 1993;36(8): ), an article appeared that reviewed the role nitric oxide p l a y s i n j o in t he a l th. Chondrocytes are one type of cell that produce a form of nitric oxide synthase, which forms nitric oxide. T h e v a s c u l a r endothelium produces nitric oxide, which acts to relax blood vessels, improving blood flow. It acts on the autonomic nervous system, through efferent nerves, and can suppress the initial formation of atherosclerosis lesions. It inhibits platelet adhesion and aggregation, suppressing thrombosis, according to an article appearing in The New England Journal of Medicine (July 27, 1995;333(4): ). A separate article in The Lancet (Sept 27, 1997;350: ) stated that in patients with high cholesterol, supplementation with L-arginine im p roves t he he al t h of t he endothelium. That article also stated that nitric oxide is a powerful vasodilator and inhibits plaque formation. Also in The New England Journal of Medicine (July 27, 1995;333(4): ) is a study that looked at nitric oxide synthase in the lung endothelia of 22 patients with plexogenic pulmonary arteiopathy, and 24 patients with secondary pulmonary hypertension and compared these subjects to 22 controls. The study found that pulmonary h y p e r t e n s i o n i s associated with low nitric oxide synthase activity. L-arginine supplementation has been shown to reduce pulmonary pressure in p a t i e n t s w i t h p u l m o n a r y hypertension. Another article in the same issue states that earlier animal studies on pulmonary hypertension have shown that supplementing with L-arginine improves vasodilation. Nitric oxide is good for heart health, among other things Argizyme TM is enzymatically processed organic beet and tillandsia (Silver Spanish Moss), and rice bran in a base of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, molasses and a specially grown biologically active vegetable culture containing trace elements, SOD and catalase and the enzyme arginase. Also consider NitroGreens TM as a source of nitric oxide.

2 T H E B E T T E R H E A L T H N E W S Page 2 R E S T L E S S L E G S S Y N D R O M E Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder causing restlessness and the urge to move the legs. A recent study, published in the January 1, 2008 issue of Neurology suggests that people with RLS have an increased risk for stroke or heart disease. The subjects of the study were 3,433 men and women, with an average age of 68. They were participants in the Sleep Heart Health Study. Nearly 7% of the female participants and about 3.3% of the men had RLS, as determined by a questionnaire. The participants also answered questions about cardiovascular disease and stroke. The presence of RLS was associated with a two-fold likelihood of cardiovascular disease or stroke. This association was especially strong among those who experienced severe symptoms more than 16 times each month. Nutrition may play a role. In the journal Age, Ageing (May 1994;23(3): ), a small study was published, involving 18 elderly subjects with RLS and 18 controls. The study inversely associated serum ferritin with the severity of RLS symptoms. Ferrous sulfate was given to 15 of the subjects and the RLS score improved in eleven of the patients with greater improvement going to those with the lowest ferritin levels. Another article in the journal Sleep (June 15, 1998;21(4): ) looked at 27 patients between the ages of 29 and 81 and found a correlation between the severity of symptoms and low ferritin levels. Magnesium supplementation was used in a small pilot study published in the journal Sleep (1998;21(5): ). Ten subjects with RLS were given magnesium supplementation over a period of four to six weeks. There was a reduction in leg movements (from 33 to 21 per hour) and sleep efficiency also improved. Exercise may also be beneficial. Another small study appearing in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine (2006; 19(5): ) involved 23 subjects with RLS. They were divided into two groups. One group was put on an exercise program that included aerobic activity and lower body resistance training, and the other served as a control. At the end of 12 weeks, the group doing the exercise had a significant improvement in symptoms. Restless legs syndrome may involve dopaminergic pathways, so folic acid may play a role. In the Journal of Womens Health Gender Based Medicine (May 2001;10 (4): ), reduced levels of folic acid were found in pregnant women with RLS. The Canadian Medical Association Journal, (August 7, 1976;115: ), and the journal Medical Hypotheses, (1976;2: ) both mention folic acid as a possible treatment of RLS. Also, since dopaminergic pathways may be involved, tryptophan may be of value; and there are some small studies to support this. Granted, these were small studies, but considering that the treatments in these studies are very low-risk, they may be worth a try. Iron should only be given if there is a deficiency, so it is wise to check ferritin levels before supplementation. Magnesium is a very common deficiency, as is folic acid and there are typically no side-effects with supplementation (although taking too much magnesium can make the stools loose). Exercise should be recommended, even if RLS is not a problem. Fe-Zyme TM is a source of iron, copper, zinc and vitamin B12 in a base of ascorbic acid to facilitate up-take of the iron. Mg-Zyme TM is a source of organically combined magnesium (100 mg per tablet). Each tablet of Folate-5 Plus TM contains 5 mg of folic acid and 18 mcg of vitamin B12 per tablet Make the most out of RLS...or you can try Fe-Zyme TM, Folate-5 Plus TM and Mg-Zyme TM, BIOTICS RESEARCH Our foundation is innovative ideas and carefully researched concepts. 3 V O L U M E 4, I S S U E 8 Page 3 C H E M I C A L S I N B A B Y P R O D U C T S A class of chemicals, called phthalates, is found in baby shampoos, lotions and powders. Phthalates are used to stabilize fragrances and to help make plastics flexible. A recent study, published in the journal Pediatrics (Vol. 121 No. 2 February 2008, pp. e260- e268) found elevated phthalate levels in the urine of babies on whom baby lotion, shampoo, or baby powder (containing the chemical) had been used. Earlier studies on animals indicate that these chemicals are animal carcinogens and can cause fetal death, malformations, and reproductive toxicity in laboratory animals. To quote the researchers, Phthalate exposure is widespread and variable in infants. Infant exposure to lotion, powder, and shampoo were significantly associated with increased urinary concentrations This association was strongest in young infants, who may be more vulnerable to developmental and reproductive toxicity from phthalates given their immature metabolic system capability and increased dosage per unit body surface area. At present, U.S. manufacturers are not required to list phthalate contents on products' package labels, making it difficult for parents to make informed decisions. Some countries have limited their use. Babies don't need special lotions and powders. Water alone or shampoo in very small amounts is generally enough to clean infant hair. Concerned parents can seek products labeled "phthalate-free." C A N B R O C C O L I P R O T E C T Y O U F R O M T H E S U N? Research appearing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (2007 Oct 30;104(44): Epub 2007 Oct) found that the topical application of a broccoli extract may protect from UV rays. The research, performed at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that the extract, called sulforaphane, works differently from traditional sunscreens. The researchers measured the reddening and inflammation caused by the UV rays. The broccoli extract reduced the reddening of the skin (erythema) by over 37%. In addition, the protective effect lasted long after the extract had been applied. Three days after the application of the extract, subjects still experienced a reduction in skin reddening when exposed to UV radiation. Sulforaphane does not absorb UV rays, but helps the cells defense against sun damage. The extract somehow enhances the activity of proteins that are part of the cell s defensive system. That defensive system acts to inhibit carcinogens, helps dispose of damaged, potentially cancerous cells, and suppresses the inflammatory response. The reason the broccoli extract works for several days after application is that it does not merely block UV rays, it actually enhances the health of the cells. wholehealthamerica.com Can now add content and a newsletter to your existing website For more information about products mentioned here, contact Biotics Research at: (800)

4 T H E B E T T E R H E A L T H N E W S Page 4 F I B R O M Y A L G I A S T U D I E S Research has shown a link between magnesium deficiency and fibromyalgia. In The Journal of Nutritional Medicine (1994;4: ) research found that the patients with fibromyalgia had very low red blood cell magnesium levels. Other research published in The Journal of Nutritional Medicine (1992;3:49-59) consisted of 15 patients with fibromyalgia who were treated with a combination of magnesium and malic acid for eight weeks. Those receiving the supplementation experienced a decrease in the sensitivity of the tender points. Within two days of the start of supplementation, the patients experienced decreased myalgia. Subjects receiving the placebo actually got worse. Magnesium and malic acid are necessary for the production of ATP. Magnesium is also necessary for most enzymes that require B vitamins as a cofactor. In the Journal of Advancement in Medicine (Summer 1992;5(2): ) researchers tested erythrocyte transketolase (a means of measuring thiamin need) in 137 subjects. Seventy-five of the subjects experienced chronic pain. Erythrocyte transketolase activity was lower in fibromyalgia patients and in alcoholics. The authors of the article note that fibromyalgia patients have responded to thiamin injections. According to the article, fibromyalgia patients respond better to the phosphorylated form of thiamin than they do to thiamin hydrochloride. The problem may have to do with how the thiamin is metabolized rather than a simple deficiency. A small study appearing in the American Journal of Medicine (May, 1999;106: ) looked at cortisol levels and ACTH levels in 15 women with fibromyalgia and in 13 healthy controls. To quote the authors, Women with fibromyalgia had normal 24-hour urinary free cortisol levels and normal diurnal patterns of ACTH and cortisol. There was a significant, approximately 30%, reduction in the ACTH and epinephrine responses to hypoglycemia in women with fibromyalgia compared with controls. Patients with fibromyalgia have an impaired ability to activate the hypothalamicpituitary portion of the hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal axis as well as the sympathoadrenal system, leading to reduced ACTH and epinephrine responses to hypoglycemia. Published in the Annals of Rheumatic Disease (2001; 60: 21-26) was a small study, involving 21 women. Eleven went through a strength training program, and 10 received no special care. After a 21-week strength training program, women with fibromyalgia experienced a reduction in their levels of depression and fatigue. Their pain levels, however, did not change. In another study, published in the British Medical Journal (Volume 325, Number 7357, Issue of 27 Jul 2002), point-tenderness did improve with exercise. The British study, involving 130 fibromyalgia patients, had the subjects performing either progressive aerobic exercise (on a treadmill or stationary bike), or relaxation and stretching. Researchers found that subjects performing progressive aerobic exercise were twice as likely to rate themselves as much better or very much better, as compared to those who did flexibility training and relaxation techniques. The benefits of the exercise were sustained when patients were checked at a one-year follow up. Patients in the exercise group also showed larger reductions in terms of the number of tender points. Tender points, or "trigger points," are locations on patients that produce a sharp pain if pressed on during an examination. Consider Mg-Zyme TM, Bio-3B-G R, ADHS R. If the patient has low blood pressure or wakes up in the middle of the night, those symptoms may be due to a thiamin need. Bio 3-B 3 G R is a low dose, phosphoylated B complex that contains extra thiamin. Give the patient 1 per hour (for a grown adult) for two days then 2 tablets 3x per day thereafter. Generally they begin to sleep better and their energy, in general, improves. Another thing to consider giving to patients with sleep problems is De-Stress TM. Bio-3B 3B-G R often helps those who cannot stay asleep. Another good sleep aid is De-Stress TM
