Which vitamin is good for your eyesight? And which vitamin helps you heal or fight off an infection? Following is some important information about other key vitamins that we need to stay healthy The B Vitamins There isn t just one vitamin B there are eight of them! If you want to run, play soccer or go cycling, these vitamins are very important They help you build up energy and release it These vitamins help make red blood cells that carry oxygen around your body B vitamins are found in fish, poultry, meat, dairy products (milk and yogurt), broccoli, leafy green vegetables (such as spinach), whole grains (wheat and oats), beans and eggs Vitamin K Broccoli, leafy green vegetables and dairy products also contain vitamin K Why is vitamin K important? Because it helps your blood clot when you cut yourself The cells at the surface of the cut stick together and stop the bleeding Isn t that amazing? Vitamin E Vitamin E is a very busy vitamin! It works hard to protect the tissues in your eyes, liver and skin It keeps your lungs healthy and protects them from air pollution It helps make red blood cells, too Where can you find it? 5 Unit 3 1 Read and answer the questions Breakfast cereals are great! They are tasty, and just one bowl of cereal can provide you with up to half of your daily requirement of the top 15 vitamins and minerals So how can you be sure that your favorite cereal is a healthy option? Always read the nutrition facts on the side of the cereal carton! Check the nutrition facts for these things: Look for whole grains, such as whole wheat, whole oats or bran There should be at least 3 grams of protein per serving The higher the amount of dietary fiber, the healthier the cereal! Less than 25 percent of carbohydrates should be sugar Therefore, if there are 20 grams of carbohydrates, there should be less than 5 grams of sugar (5/20 = 1/4 or 25%) That means most of the carbohydrates come from the grain and fibers and not from added sugar The vitamin and mineral content should be from 25 to 40 percent of the recommended daily allowance Avoid artificial colors and flavors, chemical preservatives and hydrogenated oils Start checking the nutrition facts on your cereal box You can make sure your breakfast is a healthy one! 1 What percentage of your daily vitamins and minerals can you get in a bowl of cereal? of your daily vitamins and minerals should it contain? 2 Mark ( ) the ingredients that are recommended artificial colors whole grains hydrogenated oils proteins 2 Read and label the cereal boxes Unhealthy Start Healthy Start Nutrition Facts (per serving) Calories 200 Total Carbohydrates 50 g Sugars 5 g Dietary Fiber 8 g Protein 6 g Vitamins and Minerals Ingredients vitamins A, B6 (25%), folic acid, B12 (25%), D, iron (60%), zinc whole grain wheat, bran Nutrition Facts (per serving) Calories 190 Total Carbohydrates 40 g Sugars 20 g Dietary Fiber 03 g Protein 12 g Vitamins and Minerals Ingredients vitamins A, C (25%), B6 (25%), folic acid (25%), B12 (25%), D, iron, zinc wheat flakes, sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oil, food coloring, added vitamins and minerals 36
