5 Ask the Pharmacist: What is a Pharmacy medicine? Ever wondered why some medicines are hidden away behind a counter and some are easily accessible in your local LiveLife Pharmacy? When our Therapeutic Goods Administration approves the sale of medicine in Australia, they also make decisions on how freely it should be available to the public. For example, they will choose whether something is prescription only, Pharmacy only or able to be sold in supermarkets. These decisions are generally based on the safety of each medicine and the types of conditions it is used to treat; i.e. the safer the medicine and the more minor the condition, the more readily available this medicine will become. In some cases, the amount of medicine in a packet may also affect where and how it can be sold. For example, a supermarket may sell Paracetamol in smaller packets; larger boxes up to 100 tablets are only available from your Pharmacy. So what are these in-between Pharmacy medicines that we are talking about? The ones that we can t just buy off the supermarket shelves, and yet they are available without prescription at your local Pharmacy? Pharmacy-only medicines are available with consultation from your Pharmacist or Pharmacy assistant and are available behind a medicines counter in Queensland and for self-selection in other states. What should you expect when you make a purchase of a Pharmacy medicine? Your Pharmacy Assistant and Pharmacist will ask you a number of questions before selling you a Pharmacy-only medicine. Please don t be embarrassed or annoyed by the questions. The Pharmacist needs to confirm the problem and suggest the most appropriate treatment, in a similar way to a Doctor prescribing a medicine. Common questions you may be asked: Who is the medicine for? Has the patient had the medicine before? What are the symptoms? Are there any allergies? Are there any other medicines being taken concurrently? Are there any other medical conditions? The Pharmacist and Pharmacy Assistant may also offer advice on how to help the problem without taking a medicine. The Pharmacist may even choose not to sell you a medicine, even if you have specifically requested it. This decision rests with the Pharmacist and is always made with your best interests in mind. After purchasing your medicine, you should be well informed on the following: How often to use the product and for how long When to seek further medical advice What side-effects may be expected What other medicines substances to avoid while using the product.
