2 Welcome Dear Delegates, It is an honor and a delight to welcome you to the 2nd Clinical Day in Occupational Medicine and Work Disability Prevention at the Delta Prince Edward Hotel, Charlottetown, PEI. We are pleased to host this event. Healthcare providers and WCB staff play an important role in an injured worker s recovery and this event will help promote collaboration and partnership amongst these groups. The conference covers a wide variety of topics including: the risks of worklessness, chronic pain, affecting outcomes, low back pain, psychological injuries, motivational interviewing and the potential benefits and adverse effects of cannabis. We are confident that this will be a great educational event for Island health care providers. I would like to thank the members of the Planning Committee for their valuable time and contribution in organizing this event. I would also like to take this opportunity to extend a thank you to Health PEI, our conference speakers and exhibitors, for making this a successful event. Clinicians will be challenged to reconsider writing sick leave notes of extended duration and inadvertently enabling worklessness. 1. To become familiar with the concept of worklessness as it applies to the health and wellbeing of your patient and your community 2. To be able to differentiate impairment from disability 3. To be able to assess fitness for work from the perspectives of risk, capacity and tolerance 4. The responses to the questions may help maximize therapeutic alliance by educating patients that all their pain experience is 100% real and how sometimes a sensitized nervous system may be contributing to their on-going pain experience. 1. Provide patients with a logical explanation how a sensitized nervous system may be contributing to their ongoing pain experience 3:45 pm - 4:30 pm Breakout Sessions (choice of three sessions) The Cannabis Cure : Fact or Fiction Dr. Charl Els In Canada, cannabis has been available for medical purposes for almost 20 years. With legalization of cannabis for recreational purposes in 2018, additional issues will arise. This session outlines the evidentiary basis for authorization for medical purposes and offers an algorithm for clinical decision-making. It includes information related to adverse events and results from a recently completed systematic review related to occupational risks associated with use. 1. Cite evidence-based indications for, and contraindications to, treatment with cannabis 2. Identify the potential benefits and adverse effects / harms associated with cannabis use 3. Implement an algorithm for appropriate selection of cannabinoids

5 Tips for Healthcare Providers: What you Say Can Affect Outcomes Dr. Bahram Jam The presentation will discuss clinically applicable solution to preventing patients from becoming a VOMIT (Victim of Medical Imaging Technology). There will be discussion on proposing a paradigm shift from focusing on eliminating pain to returning to desired function. 1. Provide skills for health care providers to reduce focus on finding flaws in patients but on the positive aspects of their physical health Low Back Pain: Making Current Guidelines Relevant to Your Practice Dr. Mitch Cosman Clinicians face daily challenges on both the diagnosis and management of low back pain. This presentation will review current guidelines on this matter and provide a practical approach that can be readily utilized in the office. 1. Formulate a basic diagnostic approach to acute/subacute low back pain 2. Identify the clinical situations that require imaging studies or other investigations 3. Prescribe evidence based treatment 4. Implement outcome measures as part of treatment recommendations 4:30 pm - 4:45 pm Question and Answer with breakout presenters 4:45 pm - 5:30 pm Breakout Sessions (choice of three sessions) Psychological Injury in the Workplace Dr. Charl Els Traumatic psychological injury is a rapidly growing and high-priority claim area. Psychological injuries stemming from workplace exposure is best diagnosed by enlisting a trained professional who can administer and interpret standardized assessment measures, which should include validity testing. This session offers an update on Canadian jurisprudence on relevant thresholds, the concept of posttraumatic growth, as well as a step-wise approach to implementing a causation analysis to establish psychological injury with a reasonable degree of certainty. 1. Define the concept and describe the diagnostic threshold for psychological injury; 2. Implement a causation analysis in cases of psychological injury; 3. Explain the concept of posttraumatic growth and how it impacts outcomes. Motivational Interviewing Sheri Coburn Helping professionals regularly encounter challenging forms of resistance in their clients, and feel unable to respond in an effective way. This workshop is geared towards those new to working with resistant clients or professionals who are looking for new ways to facilitate the change process in the people they work with. 1. Participants will be challenged to reassess their methods of interacting with resistant clients 2. Bring a new, collaborative, client-centered approach to their work 3. Drawing from the approaches of Motivational Interviewing, Positive Discipline and Internal Family Systems Model, this experiential workshop will equip helping professionals with an enhanced style and new strategies that will strengthen their therapeutic relationships and maximize potential for motivating change.

6 Persisting Symptom Management After Concussion Dr. Mitch Cosman The diagnosis of concussion continues to increase in communities throughout Canada. Along with this, there has been an increase in the prevalence of chronic symptoms and disability attributed to post-concussion syndrome. This presentation is intended to provide the healthcare practitioner with a practical approach that respects safety concerns around concussion and at the same time, limits the negative health consequences associated with a diagnosis of concussion. 1. Consider the variable diagnostic criteria for concussion 2. Assess fitness for activity after concussion 3. Evaluate the effectiveness of the promoted treatment options 4. This expert panel, including an employer and an injured worker, will examine how all stakeholders must work together as a team to prevent chronic work disability. Leaning Objectives: 1. Learn how employers can help the treatment team in overcoming the pain barrier 2. Learn how workers can be motivated to consider returning to modified duties even if they are not 100% pain free 3. 7 Speaker Bios Dr. Mitch Cosman, BSc (PT), MD Dr. Cosman is a University of Western Ontario and University of Calgary graduate who has been practicing sports medicine in Winnipeg for the past 35 years. His clinical experience includes team physician for several Manitoba Provincial teams as well as the Winnipeg Jets and Blue Bombers. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Cosman is the Chief Medical Officer of the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba. Dr. Bahram Jam, DScPT, MPhty, FCAMT Dr. Bahram Jam is a Canadian Physiotherapist with 25 years of clinical experience and is the founder / chief instructor at Advanced Physical Therapy Education Institute ( He has instructed over one thousand post-graduate orthopaedic and pain science courses and has been a guest presenter at several physiotherapy conferences across Canada and internationally. He has written several contentious, yet evidence-based papers which are all are freely available on He is the author of the patient education manual The Pain Truth & Nothing But! (English & French), which has sold more than 5000 copies. There are now three short patient education videos that are freely accessible on YouTube based on his book. Dr. Charl Els, MBChB, FCPsych[SA], MMed Psych(cum laude), Dip.ABAM, MROCC Dr. Charl Els is a fellowship-trained psychiatrist and addiction specialist. He is a Clinical Professor in Psychiatry and in Medicine at the University of Alberta. Dr. Els is the author/ co-author of several publications, including in the Lancet, the Cochrane Collaboration, the CDC's Journal of Chronic Disease Prevention. His research focuses on opioids, cannabis, random drug testing, and psychological injury in the workplace. Dr. Els also conducts assessments on workers in safety-sensitive positions. Sheri Coburn, MSW, RSW Sheri is a trainer with Crisis & Trauma Resource Institute (CTRI) and a Registered Social Worker who holds a Master of Social Work degree and a Bachelor's degree in Criminology. She has a diverse professional background with experiences as a correctional officer, addictions counsellor and developer and coordinator of a domestic violence outreach program. Sheri is a co-author of a Counselling Insights book. In addition to her work with CTRI, Sheri is also a counsellor in a private practice setting. She currently provides individual and family counselling in the areas of mental health, addiction, recovering after relationship breakdown and trauma. Sheri believes humor, self acceptance, and social connection is the best framework for successful healing and meaningful learning. Sheri works to reflect this in her facilitation style and is a knowledgeable, passionate and engaging presenter. He is passionate about preventing patients from becoming a VOMIT (Victim of Medical Imaging Technology). His VOMIT posters have helped thousands of patients by reducing fears and anxieties which are often a result of over-medicalization. His primary clinical approach is to identify relevant functional impairments and determine the best self-management strategy to maximize patient independence. His influences include greats such as Robin McKenzie, Brian Mulligan, Peter O Sullivan, Lorimer Mosely and David Butler.
