2014 Clinical Symposium & From the President Greetings: According to the Constitution of the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers Association one of our core missions as an association is to enable our members to become better acquainted personally and professionally through casual fellowship. What better way to accomplish this goal than with our annual OATA Symposium and. Some have the belief that the Symposium is for a quick and easy way of gaining the required number of CEUs. I am not sure that is the first and foremost reason for attending our annual meeting. Don t get me wrong, we have an excellent curriculum planned including the opportunity to gain three hours of Evidence Based Credits. I would instead argue the true reason to attend the annual OATA Symposium and Business meeting is for the fellowship and for the sharing of ideas and best practices to help propel the profession of Athletic Training forward in the state of Oklahoma. If it has been awhile since you have attended a meeting or if you are looking for a way to further get involved with your profession, I would encourage you to attend this year s meeting on May 28 th and 29 th at the on the Campus of The University of Tulsa Those of you that were able to attend last year s meeting can attest to the facilities and the effortlessness of the symposium format. We are keeping with the Friday afternoon and all day Saturday format that we implemented last year. We will once again host our annual golf tournament Friday morning at South Lakes Golf Course in Jenks, OK. The Hall of Fame and Awards Ceremony will be Saturday at lunch where we will be inducting two outstand and influential athletic trainers into our Hall of Fame. And as is tradition in the OATA we will have an opportunity for a Town Hall meeting where members are encouraged to voice their concerns about the profession. As you can see in the following pages, the meeting committee has out done themselves once again to put together a schedule that meets the needs of many in the state of Oklahoma. So I encourage you on May 29 th and 30 th to join me in Tulsa for another year of fellowship and education. I look forward to seeing you there. Respectfully, CJ Fedor, Med, ATC, LAT President Oklahoma Athletic Trainers Association

2014 Clinical Symposium & Educational Symposium: Friday, May 29th Gussman Concert Hall Kitty Newsham, PhD, AT Associate Professor, Saint Louis University 2:30pm: Evidence-Based Practice in Athletic Healthcare LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ESSENTIAL ABSTRACT: There is considerable misunderstanding of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in many health care disciplines, including athletic training. EBP goes beyond simply using evidence in practice, but includes the integration of the best available clinical evidence, clinician expertise, and patient values to arrive at a patient-centered strategy for delivering health care. Utilizing EBP principles includes formulating a patient-centered, focused, clinical question, understanding aspects of clinical epidemiology, and appreciating differences in study design common to athletic health care. 3:30pm: Evidence-Based Practice: Diagnostic Accuracy LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ESSENTIAL ABSTRACT: Athletic trainers perform clinical evaluations of musculoskeletal conditions as part of their daily practice. These examinations include a variety of special tests or clinical assessment techniques that are recommended to assist in identifying impairments. Recent studies of the selected techniques indicate varying levels of accuracy and/or utility of these tests. An understanding of clinically important statistics (e.g., sensitivity, specificity, and likelihood ratios) can influence clinical practice by focusing evaluations on evaluation techniques that offer greater diagnostic accuracy. Clinical application of this information can help streamline evaluations, saving time and other resources. Further, consideration of clinician skill and patient values should not be disregarded in the examination process.
2014 Clinical Symposium & Educational Symposium: Friday, May 29th Gussman Concert Hall Kitty Newsham, PhD, AT Associate Professor, Saint Louis University 4:30pm: Exploring Exercise Induced Respiratory Symptoms LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ESSENTIAL ABSTRACT: Exercise-induced respiratory symptoms are common in the athletic population. Anecdotal accounts and patient reports indicate diagnoses are often made on the basis of patient reported symptoms. Unfortunately, this practice results in considerable missed diagnoses as demonstrated through studies of adolescents and of intercollegiate and recreational athletes. Further, current objective testing is often limited to broncho-provocation tests, leaving alternative or co-existing diagnoses unexplored. Clinicians must be aware of the differential diagnoses associated with exercise related respiratory symptoms and appropriate objective diagnostic testing that is central to developing an effective therapeutic intervention. Albert G s BBQ 421 E. 1st St., Tulsa, OK (918) :00pm: Oklahoma Athletic Trainers Association Social Please make plans to join us at the OATA Social for food, fun, and casual fellowship.
2014 Clinical Symposium & Educational Symposium: Saturday, May 30th Vendor Day Meinig Recital Hall 8:05am: Common Questions for YP s: An Expert Panel Discussion *Sponsored by the OATA YP Committee LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ESSENTIAL ABSTRACT: Young professional clinicians face a variety of challenges and obstacles beginning in a profession. This session will utilized several tenured athletic trainers from a variety of specializations who have served in a vast array of professional capacities to answer and discuss common questions faced by the young professional. Additionally, professionals of all experience are welcome to pose questions or challenges to the panel for discussion. Gussman Concert Hall 8:30am: Updates on Concussion Management Eric W. Sherburn, MD: Neurosurgeon Oklahoma Spine & Brain Institute LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED ABSTRACT: Concussion continues to be a very controversial issue in our society. Despite this, there is very poor understanding of the pathophysiology and clinical consequences of concussion. The author will review the most up to date information regarding the diagnosis and management of concussion.
2014 Clinical Symposium & Educational Symposium: Saturday, May 30th Vendor Day Gussman Concert Hall 9:30am: Legal Aspects of Athletic Training: A Survey of Current Topics Andew A. Shank, Attorney at Law Eller & Detrich LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ESSENTIAL Meinig Recital Hall ABSTRACT: Sports medicine litigation has become and evolving and ever increasing area of focus for those competing and working in sport. This presentation will review two cases that analyze negligence in athletic healthcare and likewise examine the growing field of concussion litigation. 9:30am: Total Motion Release: A New Approach to Pain and Injury Management Tom Dalonzo-Baker, PT Founder, Total Motion-Release Video Conference Presentation LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED ABSTRACT: Tom will immediately expose you to this turnkey approach by having you find motions that are out of symmetry in your own body. You will shockingly discover how what you are currently doing to treat injury is almost 3 times slower than the speed this will hit you with. You will treat & see for yourself how two minutes of this concept will prove it to be everything Tom promises it to be. This will open up a bee hive of disbelief in which Tom again will respond by having you set up another experiment to test yourself your current way versus TMR. You will leave this session shaken & having your core foundation of what you know changed and expect yourself to be hooked on this new way of thinking.
2014 Clinical Symposium & Educational Symposium: Saturday, May 30th Vendor Day Meinig Recital Hall 10:45am: Free Communication Student s Session Ankle Taping vs. Ankle Bracing Carly Hamann, Undergraduate Athletic Training Student ABSTRACT: The purpose of the presentation is to compare ankle taping vs. ankle bracing in the aspects of stability, support, performance, and prevention. The presentation also takes a look at which method is more desirable in respect to the budgeting concerns present at football program vs. that of a NCAA Division III football program. The Relationship between Immediate Implementation of Restricted Physical and Cognitive Rest and the Reduction of Symptoms and Improved Neurocognitive Functioning in High School Athletes Joni Cook, AT, Graduate Student ABSTRACT: Concussions are a frequent injury in high school sports that can alter neurocognitive brain functions while contributing to a number of symptoms. To some extent these can hinder student-athletes performance abilities in the classroom (Majerske, 2008). Furthermore, studies have shown student-athletes who continue to use their physical and neurocognitive abilities while concussed can increase symptoms and prolong recovery (Brown, 2014). The question then arises, will implementing immediate 48 hour restrictive physical and cognitive rest help shorten overall symptom recovery times and improve neurocognitive functions in concussed athletes? Attending clinicians will be invited to participate in this study during the course of the 2015 OSSAA fall and winter athletic seasons.
2014 Clinical Symposium & Educational Symposium: Saturday, May 30th Vendor Day Gussman Concert Hall 2:30pm: Pediatric Cardiology in Athletes Matthew T. Kimberling, MD Pediatric Cardiology of Oklahoma, PLLC LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED Meinig Recital Hall ABSTRACT: Pediatric cardiology, particularly in athletics, has gained a significant amount of local, regional, and national recognition in the last several years. The discussion over mass heart screenings and mandatory hands only CPR training for all high school graduates has only served to increase awareness of this important issue. This presentation will therefore will provide a review of common athletic cardiac pathologies as well as a discussion of effective recognition and management of such pathologies in order to improve the effectiveness of the sports medicine clinician. 2:30pm: ACL Rehab 4.0: Not Your Grandfather s Protocol Anymore Koby Smith, AT Head Athletic Trainer, Tulsa Roughnecks Soccer Club LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED ABSTRACT: As ACL injuries continue to rise, along with the odds of re-injury or an injury to the other leg, performing the best possible rehabilitation is imperative but is not all about strengthening, proprioception, and flexibility. Its about changing your athlete s mindset. Teaching them to play the game at a different level and with confidence. After attending this presentation, the AT will come away with ideas and a newly found confidence to push their athletes to achieve great results. Whether it s a 4 month rehab or an 8 month rehab, the athlete will walk away confident with two good legs.
2014 Clinical Symposium & Educational Symposium: Saturday, May 30th Vendor Day Gussman Concert Hall 3:30pm: Post-Concussion Syndrome: How Physical Therapy Can Bridge the Gap Between Injury and Return to Play Holly Thompson, PT Tulsa Spine & Rehab LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED Meinig Recital Hall ABSTRACT: Physical Therapists who specialize in vestibular rehabilitation and balance retraining have specific exercises to address deficits caused from concussion. If an athlete has not recovered with 3-4 weeks, they may require techniques designed to: a) help the brain re-integrate day to day information, b) eliminate post-concussion symptoms, and c) tolerate their sport specific tasks. This presentation will help you identify when to utilize physical therapy services and how to work together for optimum recovery of the athlete. 3:30pm: Care and Prevention for Coaches Overhaul Russ Shuchman, AT Secondary Schools Committee Chair *Sponsored by the OATA Secondary School s Committee LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED ABSTRACT: This peer to peer presentation will take a look at the topics that need to be covered in a Coach s Care and Prevention course in order to meet/exceed the OK State Department of Education standards. Additionally, this presentation will give insights to Secondary School clinicians on what areas to cover as well discussing the future of this topic.
2014 Clinical Symposium & Educational Symposium: Saturday, May 30th Vendor Day Gussman Concert Hall 4:30pm: Best Practices: Now Why are They Important to Me? CJ Fedor, AT President: Oklahoma Athletic Trainers Association LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: ESSENTIAL ABSTRACT: The presenter will facilitate a discussion on many common Best Practices that have been published in recent journal articles, and lead a discussion of Why and How we should follow these practices. Discussion will also address potential barriers and solutions a clinician may encounter when implementing Best Practices. The 2015 OATA Clinical Symposium is only a success because of you, the membership of the OATA. Your partnership and support make this association what it is and will be for many years to come. Thank you for attending the 2015 Oklahoma Athletic Trainers Association Clinical Symposium &.
