2 Leadership and Activities for the Year March 2014 February 2015 I. The Philippine College of Chest Physicians Established on April 25, 1973, the Philippine College of Chest Physicians is a value-centered specialty organization acknowledged as the authority in pulmonary medicine in the country. It empowers its members, who are recognized and respected experts in the field, to constantly adapt and innovate to set the benchmark of excellence in the practice of pulmonary medicine in the Philippines. It is the PCCP s goal to promote greater involvement, collaborative partnership and strategic alliances with Asian and International organizations relating to academe, clinical and policy-making activities. Membership: 629 fellows, 73 diplomates, 8 honorary members, 328 associate members II. Provincial Chapters The PCCP has nine chapters in the Philippines. The members continue to be dynamic and consistently position themselves at the forefront of lung health and various related advocacies. PCCP Councils The organization also has eleven councils which is one of the important lifelines of the College. This strategy has enabled PCCP to provide unwavering focus to address various lung-related diseases and issues. The Councils are involved in a lot of activities which mainly revolves around training and CME sessions, scientific and lay forum, locally responsive and relevant research investigations, local and international collaborative works on various pulmo-related initiatives and projects, and crafting of important documents like clinical practice guidelines and statements. These continue to produce specialists who start their practice in strategic locations. These graduates are perceived to be the emerging leaders in pulmonary-related issues and are quickly integrated into various local initiatives and researches. 2 P age 1. Veterans Memorial Medical Center Training The PCCP and its 13 accredited hospitals shall involve the joint efforts to conduct and undertake a proper, effective and efficient implementation of the core competency-based curriculum for adult pulmonary medicine fellowship training (2013 version) so that the accredited institutions, to the best of its capability & resources, can provide adult pulmonary medicine fellowship training that will hone and develop professional, competent, skilled, ethical and compassionate pulmonologists who will ably serve the Filipino people & the global community. Research Research Travel Grant given to fellows-in-training from PCCP accredited hospitals whose papers are accepted for presentation (oral, poster) in any international convention, screened and approved by the Scientific and Research Committee. 4 Diplomate Certifying Examination Dates 1. Written Examination January 11, 2015 (Sunday) 2. Oral Examination January 25, 2015 (Sunday) Venue: Bayanihan Center, Pasig City 39 candidates passed the PCCP Written and Oral Examinations and were conferred the title of DIPLOMATE during the Induction Ceremonies Pulmonary Training Program Accreditation Board The Pulmonary Training Program Accreditation Board accredits and certifies hospitals or institutions for adult pulmonary medicine training. It shall formulate and execute policies, rules and regulations governing certification, subject to the approval of the Board of Directors of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians. Seven (7) hospitals were re-accredited for 3 years: UP Philippine General Hospital Manila Doctors Hospital Veterans Memorial Medical Center St. Luke s Medical Center Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center University of Santo Tomas Hospital The Medical City Annual evaluations of the following hospitals were made: Philippine Heart Center Lung Center of the Philippines University of Perpetual Help DALTA Medical Center Makati Medical Center Chong Hua Hospital Perpetual Succour Hospital A. BOARD RESOLUTIONS Nos. 1 13; 18. Board resolution regarding the transfer of signatories for the different bank accounts and investment portfolios (College, Chapters and Councils). No. 14. The creation of sub-committee on Investment, under the Finance Committee. The committee shall be composed of the Vice President, Treasurer and 3 members of good standing. No. 15. The PCCP shall provide an annual budget allocation for chapter activities and shall require its chapters to report their respective revenues and expenses to the PCCP national office, subject to the following rules and regulations. No. 16. Approved the holding of 18 th Midyear Convention on October 9-10, 2015 in Iloilo City instead of August 2015 to avoid possible conflicts with the venue and hotel accommodations during the APEC summit which will be held from August to September 2015 in Iloilo City. The profit sharing ratio base on Net Income for the 2015 Midyear Convention will be 50%- 50% sharing, equally divided between the College and the host chapter, Iloilo Chapter. Page 4
5 Further approved that starting fund of P 200,000 will be issued to the chapter for reimbursement after the convention. No. 17. Approved the release of P 30,000 to Philippine Red Cross as donation to typhoon Ruby victims. The amount represents unused fund for the PCCP Christmas party which was cancelled. B. Debate session on pre-selected pulmonary cases that is aimed to provide an opportunity to engage and question debaters and vote on issues at hand and enables the trainees to study and research on the assigned topics prior to the scheduled session. As part of the training & research activities that the College planned to offer to the accredited adult pulmonary medicine training institutions, the PCCP has recently organized Research Workshop on Scientific Manuscript Writing and Publication Preparation on November 8, 2014, Saturday at F1 Hotel, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City. This research workshop is sponsored by Astra-Zeneca Phils Inc. but the facilitators and organizers are independent faculty members from the Department of Clinical Epidemiology of the University of the Philippines-Manila, College of Medicine. External Affairs Collaboration and Partnership with government agencies The College fully supports the National Tuberculosis Control Program (NTP) of the Department of Health (DOH) by adhering to the provisions of the Revised Manual of Procedures (MOP) and the 21 underlying principles of the International Standards for Tuberculosis Care (ISTC) which were both released this year. Represented the College to the Disease Prevention and Control Bureau, Department of Health in developing clinical care pathways and service packages for non-communicable diseases. A total of 145 enrollees have registered, classified as newly graduate from training and practicing associate members. The review was offered from July December The review program, through the valuable support of faculty from the different training institutions, has provided board eligible members a better chance of passing the certifying board exam. The continuation of this project and an increase in the number of examinees taking and actually passing the examination is a testament to its success. 6. Corporate Social Responsibility and Advocacy A. Community Service: Medical Mission and Patient Education Lectures Regular conduct of medical clinics (physical exam, chest x-ray and spirometry screening) and lay fora participated by PCCP members and fellows-in-training from the 13 accredited hospitals at the following sites: Health Service sites of German Doctors, Caloocan City twice a month Jesu Christi Community, Cebu City twice a month Metro Manila Development Authority (MA) street sweepers once a month Calamity Assistance Assistance and medical services extended to deserving areas or individual/s struck by typhoon Ruby in Samar. B. Advocacy World TB Day Commemoration March 23, 2014 Stop TB Makialam: Tara Na! Organized by the Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis, the message to call for action among all TB stakeholders and getting Page 10
11 7. Training everyone on board to reach the thousands of Filipinos who do not have the access or are stigmatized of TB and available TB services. World Asthma Day May 5-6, 2014 You Can Control Your Asthma... It s Time to ACT. Promoted asthma awareness through raffle activity to fellow internists at the Philippine College of Physicians annual scientific meeting. World No Tobacco Day May 31, 2014 Raise Tobacco Tax, Lower Death and Disease. Media guesting in press conferences hosted by the PCCP and DOH. World Spirometry Day (September 2014) Launching of PCCP and Metro Manila Development Authority (MA) joint advocacy project to provide free spirometry screening to the street sweepers of Metro Manila. Its main objective is to promote lung health by early detection of lung conditions as well as monitor them for the following years. It s a spin off from our activity in 2012 where we did spirometry screening for MA traffic enforcers. Project duration is for 5 years from Spirometry Workshop for pulmonary fellows in training was held to learn Spirometry interpretation according to the standards the Council on Diagnostics of Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) has set since 2012 and how to make and recognize a good quality Spirometry test. World COPD Day (November 2014) COPD Disease Awareness October Launched a 4-year collaboration with the Department of Health and Glaxo SmithKline, to raise public awareness on COPD thru multi-channel executions at print, radio and digital media. Printed materials (posters and flyers) will also be available at selected hospitals nationwide. COPD Olympics December 13, Now on its 7 th year, the activity is aimed to foster fellowship and camaraderie among COPD patients and family, doctors and respiratory therapists while increasing awareness for COPD. This year's theme is BIBOlympics, B-reathe I-n B- reathe O-ut. Media Briefing World COPD Day media briefing was conducted in several press conference meetings. The need of spirometry as an important tool to diagnose obstructive lung diseases will also be conveyed. International Alliance and Recognition Hosting of Educational Seminar of the APSR [ESAP] Date/Venue: August 6-7, 2014, Manila Philippines Theme: State of the Art in Pulmonology: Convergence in Practice The recently conducted Educational Seminar of APSR (ESAP) by the PCCP was a joint Mid-Year Convention of the Society last August 6-7, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza, Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. The 2-day conference was envisioned to create a platform for the exchange of up-todate information, expertise, and perspectives in the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine, complement didactic sessions with hands-on workshops to enhance the learning experience of participants and to address potential challenges in view of the ASEAN integration concept. The APSR Education Committee actively participated in the approval of the Scientific Program and appointed Professor Kazuhisa Takahashi, from the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Juntendo University, as one of the plenary speakers. Professor Takahashi talked about the latest updates on Advances of Lung Cancer Treatment. The APSR Executive Committee was ably represented by the Treasurer, Dr. Teresita de Guia, from the opening ceremonies until the culmination of the scientific activity. A total of 670 delegates attended the Manila ESAP despite the monsoon rains heightened by typhoon Halong which caused flooding and traffic jams in the streets of Metro Manila. The recently concluded Manila ESAP accomplished again the PCCP s goal to promote greater involvement, collaborative partnership and strategic alliances with Asian and international organizations relating to academe, clinical and policy-making activities. The College started to establish open communication with ERS by informing them of the incumbent officers and secretariat. ERS is encouraging members to apply for ERS based on the following categories: i. For PCCP Fellows Silver membership; Fee: 240 for 3 years ii. For Fellows-in-Training Silver Under 35 category; Fee: free of charge, renewable annually 9.
