1 POLARIS Personality Type Self- Assessment TAKING THE ASSESSMENT We are all combinations of all eight traits, but we tend to prefer one trait over the other. It s the same way when using our dominant hand we prefer it even though we could use our other hand to complete tasks. For example our dominant hand is the one we feel most comfortable with when writing, and will tend to always use it. The same is true for personality traits we prefer using specific traits over others. When you are completing the survey below, between the paired sentences, choose which one best describes you MOST OF THE TIME. There are no right or wrong answers, and there are no right or wrong personality types. Each type has its strengths and weaknesses. Try to sort out what you THINK you SHOULD do, or have been TOLD is BETTER, from what you REALLY PREFER. There are always exceptions, but ask yourself, deep down in your heart, Which description best fits who I am when all other considerations are removed? Major Scales The most popular Jungian- based personality assessment focuses on identifying personality traits around four major scales: Extraversion/Introversion (E/I), Sensing/iNtuiting (S/N), Thinking/Feeling (T/F), and Judicious/Perceptive (J/P). 1. The Extraversion and Introversion (E/I) scale deals with where a person s energy focus is and how they recharge is it external or internal? 2. The Sensing and intuiting (S/N) scale deals with how a person gathers and takes in information whether through methodical or relational ways. 3. The Thinking and Feeling (T/F) scale is not about whether someone is emotional or not, but on what criteria they base their decisions analytic rules or value- laden contexts. 4. The Judicious and Perceptive (J/P) scale is perhaps the most confusing scale to understand because the names of this scale are not in common usage. But this scale is simply how a person is oriented to life in a very organized way or in a more spontaneous way. Sub- Scales In addition to the four major traits, each personality type has sub- traits, or additional personality traits to consider. For example, everyone has both Introverting and Extraverting traits. What matters is the degree to which a person is either Introverting or Extraverting. There are quiet Extraverts and talkative Introverts. What is your unique combination of traits? Below are paired descriptions of the sub- scales for you to choose from. 2 DIRECTIONS: For each sentence pair, choose ONLY ONE trait that most accurately describes you. Place an X next to your choice. I love talking with people. Count up your Xs in the Extraverting column: 1A: Animated - - I love being sociable, chatty, and expressive, both verbally and non- verbally. It s hard to keep others from knowing what I am feeling at any given time! 2A: Bold I can walk across a room at a party and introduce myself to someone, no problem! I like initiating conversations and can get a good discussion going in a group. In other words, I can be outgoing, welcoming, and intrepid. 3A: Outgoing I prefer work and situations where I can interact with lots of people. I love parties where I can meet many new folks. It takes me hours to leave a party because of all the people I have to say good- bye to! 4A: Active I like being energetic and on the go. I really prefer being in places that are stimulating with lots to see and do. I don t like being alone, in silence with nothing to do. Hanging out with friends doing some sort of activity (shopping, partying, outdoor activities, etc.) charges me up! 4B: Oh, I love being able to come up with creative ideas on my own in the quiet of my office and then test them out with others. 5B: Let s think about what we are doing first, and then take action! 6B: I want to think things through first in my own mind before sharing them with others. 7B: Hey, let s write an ! I love writing my thoughts down. Count up your Xs in the Introverting column: 1B: Private I tend to say less than others, especially in a group where I don t know many people. I can be pretty private and it s sometimes difficult to confide in others. 2B: Reticent I feel more comfortable at a party if someone approaches me first. I m more shy and it s harder for me to initiate conversations. And don t ask me to get a discussion going with a group of strangers! 3B: Reserved I prefer work or situations where I can to be alone or in a small group without a lot of interruptions. I typically don t hang out a long time at parties unless I get to hang out with a couple special friends, and I can leave without it being a big deal. 4B: Thoughtful I enjoy a life that is more reflective, where I have some refuge from constant stimulation. I like tranquility and quiet and am re- energized by staying at home, reading a book, watching TV, and the like. 3 SENSING ways of taking in information X intuiting ways of taking in information X 1A: Only give me the real facts please, and 1B: Yeah, give me the facts, but also tell me don t stray beyond those! what the possibilities could be. 2A: I live for today and the here- and- now. 2B: Today s OK but I live for tomorrow. What s Tomorrow will take care of itself. right around the corner is so exciting! 3A: To succeed, do more of the same better. 3B: To succeed, go where no person has gone before. 4A: Show me how you connected the dots 4B: Can t you see how A connects to J and J going from A to Z sequentially! It s the only connects to B and B connects to Z? It s so way to make sense of information. obvious how they all relate! 5A: I can t give you an answer until I have ALL 5B: Well, even though I don t have all the the information. information, it s easy to see the answer. 6A: Don t muddy the waters with airy- fairy 6B: Don t muddy the waters with minute details concepts and abstractions. and nitpicky facts. 7A: I m only going to change if you can show me concrete reasons and benefits to do so. 7B: If we re not constantly changing we ll never be able to say ahead of the game! Count up your Xs in the Sensing column: 1A: Tangible I d much prefer dealing with facts and what is known than dealing with abstract fuzzy concepts. Just speak plainly and with common sense. Don t talk with me about endless ungrounded possibilities just keep to the current realities please. 2A: Pragmatic I like finding information about methods that have worked before and can work again. I m less interested in finding novel approaches or new concepts, and prefer conventional methods. Don t ask me to improvise too much! I m not comfortable doing so. If I m building a house, I ll use tried- and- true customary designs and materials. 3A: Conventional I don t like standing out or appearing unusual and would rather appear like others. I also prefer interacting with others in established ways, protocols, and etiquette. Conforming to society s standards is important to me. 4A: Prudent When I look at a chart or body of data, I am very careful not to interpret the information beyond the data at hand. And the details had better be correct! Give me steady, predictable work, not novel challenges. Count up your Xs in the intuiting column: 1B: Conceptual I much prefer focusing on theories and ideas than mundane here- and- now facts. I really like people who find novel and uncommon ways of communicating ideas. It s much more interesting to talk about future possibilities than current realities. 2B: Novel I like finding information about new ideas and models. There are always improvements being made on standard methods and I like finding out the latest innovations. I love situations where I have to improvise! It s fun. If I m building a house I want the latest inventive designs and materials! 3B: Visionary I don t like being conventional. I like appearing unusual, following my inspiration and vision. Being original and creative is important to me, and I worry less about conforming to society s standards. 4B: Trend Spotter When I look at a chart, I go beyond the data present and immediately see the trends, patterns, and implications for the future. Count up your Xs in the Thinking column: 1A: Analytic Even in emotionally charged and tense situations, I can reason clearly. I like approaching problems dispassionately without involving any emotions. In situations I tend NOT to emphasize how I feel about matters. 2A: Independent The emotional undercurrents in situations rarely affect me. I like to be treated fairly and impartially, and treat others the same. At work, getting the work done is primary and the niceties of relationships secondary. 3A: Deductive I really like keeping up with science and technology. I am much more likely to believe something is true if it makes scientific sense. I like breaking systems or models down into their respective parts. 4A: Competitive I enjoy competition and a good debate. I tend to be skeptical, critical, and tough- minded. I can easily spot flaws in a presentation or argument first. My first impulse is to give critical feedback than to find areas of praise. I can sometimes be seen as headstrong or opinionated. 5B: Appreciate what I ve done and everything that s gone right first. Tell me areas to improve on later. 6B: I like to be more kind and personal with people work before getting down to business. 7B: I trust people more who are kind, considerate, and understanding. Count up your Xs in the Feeling column: 1B: Subjective When I take a stand, I carefully consider how others will be affected. I focus on my own and other s feelings when dealing with others. In discussions I tend to emphasize how I feel about matters. 2B: Sympathetic The emotional undercurrents in situations really do affect me. I m much more concerned that we all work in harmony. Paying attention to relationships and getting work done through people is primary. 3B: Inductive I really enjoy keeping up with the arts, literature, and the humanities. I am much more likely to believe something it if attends to human values. I like taking the pieces of a system or model and seeing how each part relates to the whole. 4B: Nurturing I value being accepting, accommodating and cooperative. I easily find areas of agreement in a presentation or argument first. My first impulse is to find pieces to praise rather than giving critical feedback. 5 JUDICIOUS preferred ways of being in the world 1A: I have a place for everything and everything is in its place. I am so organized I can easily find anything. 2A: Whew! I know the plan and I have my list to follow. Now don t rock my boat! 3A: OK, you said to arrive at 6:30 pm and here I am, on the dot. 4A: Let s define our options and pick one choice. Here s what we do ready, aim, fire!. 5A: I m a master of goals, target dates, and calendars. 6A: I ll start at the beginning and work to the end. 7A: OK the plan worked, I m finished and ready to go on. Count up your Xs in the Judicious column: X PERCEIVING preferred ways of being in the world 1B: I have a place for everything and I know in which pile to look. I ll find it eventually. 2B: Yeah, I know the plan and I have my list, but following it is silly! There s always a change and that s OK. 3B: 6:30 pm means 6:30- ish, right? Or 7 or 7:30? Sorry I m late I got distracted! 4B: Let s keep our options open and see what happens. Here s what we do ready, fire, aim. 5B: I m the master of waiting until the last minute. 6B: I ll start in the middle and work out both the beginning and end. 7B: OK I m bored, my work isn t done, and something more exciting has come along that I d rather do. Count up your Xs in the Perceiving column: X 1A: Planned I really enjoy completing project, getting all the loose ends tied up, and clearing my desk. I am really good at anticipating all of the details when putting together a plan, and then acting on the plan. I tend to stick to the plan, no matter what. I like following a schedule and being well organized. 2A: Dependable It s important to me to be prompt and punctual. I like getting an early start on projects and finishing them on time or beforehand. Even with a lot to do, I try not to let work pile up. I am focused and responsible, giving 100% of myself to work or family life. 3A: Deliberate I prefer to be exact, cautious, and methodical in life. I tend not to be impulsive and I am much more goal oriented. I like living a settled life without lots of change. If a project or move looks really risky, I ll pass even if the rewards appear high. 4A: Conforming I like knowing what the rules are and then abiding by them, along with clearly spelled out goals. I also prefer working in a steady and stable environment, and security is important to me. 1B: Evolving Because projects are always changing, I try not to finish projects prematurely but keep them open. I prefer to work issues out as they unfold so I can handle unexpected crises in the moment. I value being adaptable and flexible, feeling way too confined by strict schedules, either at work or in my personal life. 2B: Relaxed Deadlines, appointment times, and schedules are meant to be flexible. I tend to get to a project at the last minute and can let work pile up. I give 100% to a project eventually, although I can be easily distracted in work and family life. 3B: Impulsive I prefer a more ad- hoc approach to life and will take opportunities when they present themselves. I am much more likely to be spontaneous and often feel restless. If a project or move is risky, I ll likely pursue it if the rewards also appear high. 4B: Non- conforming I like knowing what the rules are so I can find ways around them.
