25 Next Gender Unlimited event: June : Prof Dr Marrie Bekker (TSB) About mad men and sad women: The role of gender in mental health and mental disorders in our society Mental disorders are widespread among the population. At least 1 out of 5 persons in the European countries including The Netherlands suffers from an anxiety disorder during his/her life. Mood disorders like depression are similarly highly prevalent. Interestingly, there are large sex differences in types of mental disorders. Although there are lots of hidden anxiety disorders among men, many more women than men suffer from anxious misery like phobias, depressions, but also eating disorders. Men, on the other hand, are overrepresented in antisocial behavior, autism, and psychopathy. The antisocial variants can become manifest as explicit criminal behavior but also in seemingly normal leadership while occupying high societal positions and wearing smart suits. Being a worrior seems more often something feminine, being a warrior seems typically masculine. My lecture is about these associations between gender and various manifestations of mental health problems; and particularly about their background in society and what we can do about it.
