Staff Community Day October 26, 2012 IGNITING THE PASSION
Passion A term applied to a very strong feeling about a person or thing. Passion is an intense emotion compelling feeling, enthusiasm, or desire for something.
Vision San Jacinto College will be the leader in educational excellence and in the achievement of equity among diverse populations. We will empower students to achieve their goals, redefine their expectations, and encourage their exploration of new opportunities. Our passions are people, learning, innovation, and continuous improvement.
4 Strategic Goals Student Success P-16 pipeline Workforce and Economic Development Our People
Our People San Jacinto College is committed to recruiting, developing, and retaining quality and diverse employees who are passionate about our educational mission.
Mission Our mission is to ensure student success, create seamless transitions, and enrich the quality of life in the communities we serve.
Keys to Igniting Your Passion (at least for Brenda) Living the Empowerment Model Thinking Above the Line Creating a State of Flow in Your Life Knowing & Living like You re a Winner Live Your Values Give it Your All
EMPOWERMENT MODEL Feeling Thinking & Seek to Understand Emotional Hi-jacking Behaviour (Action or Inaction) Stimulus Circumstance Your Thoughts Knee-jerk Response Consequences The only lasting effect is to change the way we think.
THINKING BEYOND THE BREAK-THROUGH LINE STATE OF FLOW Wisdom, Reverence & Synchronicity HAPPINESS CREATIVE PERSPECTIVE BREAK-THROUGH LINE For Meaningful Life No Matter the Circumstances Joy, Passion, Gratification, Pleasure, Satisfaction, Positive Energy In Life, Family & Job -- Patience, Connecting, Trust, Openness, Commitment NEGATIVE STRESS Pressure, Uneasiness, Worry, Nervousness, Hesitation PESSIMISM APATHY Moaning, Complaining, Finding Fault, Sarcasm, Abusive Language, Self-Pity, Uncertainty, Doubt, Negativity, Unhappiness, Suspicion Start of Depression, Indifference, Avoidance, No Energy AGONY Anger, Pain, Torment, Anguish, Distress, Angst, Troubled
Below The Line Thinking Living Below the Line is a Flow Stopper. Once Below the Line Thinking takes hold in our lives, our thinking becomes conditioned and boxed in. We think and act negatively towards everything. It makes us defensive, full of resentment and irrational. Negative Thinkers see everything as a problem.
Below The Line Thinking Negative Stress: Distorted thinking is the culprit Pessimism: Subtle disease that spreads quickly Apathy: Person has no future pull; almost stuck Agony: Anger, anxiety, and fear impacts others
THINKING BEYOND THE BREAK-THROUGH LINE STATE OF FLOW Wisdom, Reverence & Synchronicity HAPPINESS CREATIVE PERSPECTIVE BREAK-THROUGH LINE For Meaningful Life No Matter the Circumstances Joy, Passion, Gratification, Pleasure, Satisfaction, Positive Energy In Life, Family & Job -- Patience, Connecting, Trust, Openness, Commitment NEGATIVE STRESS Pressure, Uneasiness, Worry, Nervousness, Hesitation PESSIMISM APATHY Moaning, Complaining, Finding Fault, Sarcasm, Abusive Language, Self-Pity, Uncertainty, Doubt, Negativity, Unhappiness, Suspicion Start of Depression, Indifference, Avoidance, No Energy AGONY Anger, Pain, Torment, Anguish, Distress, Angst, Troubled
Thinking Beyond The Break- Through Line How you are thinking creates your reality Negativity is a habit The average person has ± 55 negative thoughts per day Solution: Change language to yourself and others!
Thinking Above the Line Above the Line Thinkers know: Thinking does not depend on your circumstances it is your choice. Positive Thinkers use opportunity thinking; Negative Thinkers see everything as a problem. Blaming others and your circumstance for your discontent is giving up freedom of choice, it is being controlled, instead of being in control.
Thinking Beyond The Break- Through Line Passion is caught not taught Are people catching your passion? Is the whole package consistent (words, actions, behaviors)? Who or What are your Passion killers? Nobody can make you angry. You make the choice. Are you a stimulus in other people s lives? Is it Positive or Negative? Are you a Flow Stopper?
THINKING BEYOND THE BREAK-THROUGH LINE STATE OF FLOW Wisdom, Reverence & Synchronicity HAPPINESS CREATIVE PERSPECTIVE BREAK-THROUGH LINE For Meaningful Life No Matter the Circumstances Joy, Passion, Gratification, Pleasure, Satisfaction, Positive Energy In Life, Family & Job -- Patience, Connecting, Trust, Openness, Commitment NEGATIVE STRESS Pressure, Uneasiness, Worry, Nervousness, Hesitation PESSIMISM APATHY Moaning, Complaining, Finding Fault, Sarcasm, Abusive Language, Self-Pity, Uncertainty, Doubt, Negativity, Unhappiness, Suspicion Start of Depression, Indifference, Avoidance, No Energy AGONY Anger, Pain, Torment, Anguish, Distress, Angst, Troubled
State of Flow State of Flow is needed to ignite passion and motivate us to move forward. Flow Starters Patience -- No knee-jerk reactions Impact -- To contribute; To be a winner Perspective -- See moments as moments & life as life Optimism -- Knowing things will get better; Confidence that I can do this Future Pull -- Motivation that excites you to move forward Immediacy -- Sense of urgency; No procrastination Courage -- To take risks or adapt to change Trust --Having faith going forward Openness --To new ideas and experiences Commitment -- Finishes the Job
State of Flow Flow Stoppers Fear Past Failures Negativity Criticism (how) Tradition
State of Flow People can be Flow Stoppers. Will not have a passion for life. Will bring you down; you must deal with them. The world is in a time of change (The New Normal). Be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Know & Live like You are a Winner! The Winner is always a part of the answer. The Loser is always a part of the problem. The Winner always has a program. The Loser always has an excuse. The Winner says Let me do it for you. The Loser says That s not my job.
Know & Live like You are a Winner! The Winner sees an answer for every problem. The Loser sees a problem in every answer. The Winner sees a green near every sand trap. The Loser sees two or three sand traps near every green. The Winner says It may be difficult but it s possible. The Loser says It may be possible but it s too difficult.
Values Integrity: Ethical and Professional We act in ways which instill confidence and trust. Excellence: In Everything We Do We achieve quality results in everything we do. Accountability: It s Up to Us We take responsibility for our commitments and outcomes. Innovation: Lead the Way We apply our knowledge, skill, insight, and imagination to recognize opportunities, solve problems, and recommend new solutions.
Values Sense of Community: Caring for Those We Serve and Ourselves We demonstrate genuine concern for the well-being of our students, our community and ourselves. Student Success: Our Ultimate Measure We enable students to achieve their goals. Diversity: Celebrate the Differences We celebrate the diversity of ideas and cultures. Collaboration: We Work Together We work together for the benefit of the college.
Give it Your All If we really want to live, we better start at once to try. W H Auden Act as if it were impossible to fail. Dorothea Brande
