4 Optimism It is important to know if you are an Optimist or a Pessimist There is a test to tell you After this workshop go to the online assessment at LearnedOpt.html For now we will review what Optimism and Pessimism are, the characteristics and the benefits and dangers

5 The Difference Between Optimism and Pessimism Behind the Scenes OPTIMISM is founded in ATTRIBUTIONAL STYLE. How you explain the events that happen to you and around you. It is your view of cause and effect.

7 Pessimistic Statements and Their Domain Your boss comes to you for advice about work. He must want something from me. Personal You fail an important exam. I m never any good at academic endeavors. Personal, Permanent, Pervasive You have been feeling run down lately. I probably have a dangerous disease. Personal, Permanent, Pervasive You overhear your intimate partner bragging about you. He/She never says good things to me. Personal, Permanent You get a good evaluation from your boss. It was just luck that I did well this year. Personal, Permanent You get a broken shopping cart. I always get the bad cart. Personal, Permanent Your intimate partner expresses dissatisfaction. Everyone I love leaves me. Personal, Permanent, Pervasive You keep your cool with an angry friend. My friend made it easy for me. Personal A teacher treats you disrespectfully All teachers are unfair. Permanent, Pervasive You gain five pounds on vacation. I won t ever lose weight. I m a loser. Permanent, Pervasive, Personal Your child consistently places last in track meets. My child is poor in athletics. Permanent, Personal A driver cuts you off on the highway. All the drivers on the road are crazy now. Permanent, Pervasive

8 Pessimistic Statements and Their Domain A project at work is a great success. My team carries me all the time. Personal, Pervasive, Permanent You miss an important appointment. I wonder if my memory is going. Personal, Permanent, Pervasive You give a gift that is well received. People humor me. Personal, Pervasive There are several violent crimes reported. The world is not a safe place anymore. Permanent, Pervasive Your child has a fight at school. My kids are so much trouble. 9 View of a Pessimist Negative events are long lasting and far reaching Negative events are personal Most things just happen Positive events are random, temporary and situation specific Hopelessness and Helplessness Desert Island Example! Pessimist looks straight and does not see Optimist looks for solutions, keeps believing and is more creative If a person believes there is no solution, they will not find a solution they will fail 100 % of shots not taken don t make it!

10 View of an Optimist Negative events are temporary and contained, situation specific Negative events are about others or circumstances Positive events are permanent and far reaching Positive events are personal and directly related to actions Hopeful Personal Power

11 Benefits of Optimism versus Negative Impact of Pessimism Pessimists Have poorer immune systems Have more problems in their relationships Tend to be narrow minded Trouble with problem solving Jump to conclusions Optimists Happier and healthier Better relationships More successful and they live longer It is the number one characteristic of a successful sales person Very important characteristic for leaders Keep in mind the ripple effect and the power of Optimism

12 Good News Optimism can be learned To change from Pessimism to Optimism, change the thoughts behind the actions The foundational structure for changing any behavior you ever want to change

13 Becoming an Optimist Thoughts drive behaviors First step is to become familiar with our thoughts Both the moment to moment and the global thoughts determine Optimism or Pessimism Mindfulness Practice Mindfulness Exercises Many behaviors seem rote dissect them Become aware of Event Response Cycles If your thoughts are negative, Use the techniques we are about to discuss to Change them
