1 Chiron Association for Body Psychotherapists contemporary approaches to psychotherapy CPD Programme Autumn Image: Robert Downes CABP is an accrediting organisational member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy Building Bridges between Trauma and Personality Resource-oriented skill training Authority and trauma Facilitator: Merete Holm Brantbjerg This is one in a series of 3 weekend workshops on building bridges between trauma and personality, a method named Motoric Haiku. High stress situations generate intensity that exceeds the coping mechanisms of the personality, pushing physiological and psychological functioning to the limit. The somatic organism resorts to strategies of survival. This manifests in a loss of ordinary consciousness and a diminished capacity to feel and connect emotionally, leaving us with the challenge of how to return to the personality. Building bridges between the personality, and our ability to survive, therefore becomes essential to working with trauma. An unreleased trauma stays in us often in a defended dissociated form. The memory can become an inner authority, related to in different ways as compliant or defiant or one-up/one-down. Healing trauma is about owning and releasing the energy of locked authority positions, through the interrelation of the client and therapist. These interactions are challenging. As therapists we need skills and awareness to support us in staying present, capable of containing all the powerful inner states that circulate consciously and unconsciously in the relational field. This particular workshop offers training to support both therapist and client. For fuller details of this workshop and the other two go to Merete Holm Brantbjerg is the creator of Moaiku, a training focused on simplicity, repetition, precise individual dosing, and a here and now presence. She is also cocreator of Bodynamic Analysis, a member of European Association of Body Psychotherapy and Psykoterapeutforeningen. Merete specializes in resource-oriented skill training as a psychotherapeutic method applying it to both personality development and trauma healing. She currently leads trainings and workshops in Scandinavia, North America and London, and maintains a private practice for therapy and supervision Date: Sat/Sun Sept 24th/25th, 2011 Times: 9.30am-5.30 pm Venue: University of London Union (ULU), Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HY The fee for this course is 220. There are discounts available for booking two or more of the series of 3 weekends available. For full details go to:
2 Family Constellations Workshop Facilitator: Alun Reynolds Family Constellations Therapy, pioneered by psychotherapist Bert Hellinger, has become recognised as a powerful and far-reaching approach to finding lasting resolutions in cases which before had seemed beyond reach. It brings to light our interconnectedness with family and community and leads to a deep experiential understanding of primordial love at the heart of all kinds of mental and bodily suffering. Once that love is freed from unconscious entanglements dating back possibly several generations, it becomes a force for profound healing. An entanglement is where one family member follows the fate of an earlier family member. Basic Principles that will be experienced and practised throughout the workshop include: The healing potential of what is, rather than what we would like it to be The group as a containing and healing circle The power of embodied presence Blind love and loyalty v enlightened love and loyalty Solution orientation rather that problem orientation Lightness, joyfulness and relaxation at the heart of reality Honouring and integrating body psychotherapy and other psychotherapeutic approaches Reconciliation of dead members of the family system Healing through our ancestors Practising solutions in everyday life. Will I have an opportunity to work? There are 12 issue-holder places at each workshop: all issue-holders have the opportunity to have a constellation on their issue, provided it is appropriate. There are also 6 representative-only or resource places. We are often moved by serving others as a representative and being part of the witnessing circle often touches us in a deep and healing way. For price differentials see below. Alun Reynolds is an experienced UKCP Registered Psychotherapist and workshop leader. He learned the Family Constellation approach from the world s foremost practitioners in Germany where the work originated. He has run Family Constellation workshops many times in Edinburgh and London in the last ten years. Dates: Sat/Sun Oct 1st/2nd, 2011 Times: 9.30am-6pm. The fee for the course is 180/Issue holder; 120/Representative-only Calatonia Restoring Self-Regulation through Dyadic Regulation Facilitator: Anita Ribeiro-Blanchard Self-regulation of the body is the most basic and necessary condition for regulation of emotions and adaptative thoughts to occur. Most clients are dysregulated, both physically and emotionally, and before they are ready to take in any therapeutic processing, they need to restore their self-regulation process. Clients with a history of early (preverbal) trauma, or those with attachment issues might have never experienced consistent dyadic regulation and they need to have that corrective experience in safety. Calatonia provides holding and containment for the patient s process to unfold, through the mediation of a safe dyadic regulation with the therapist. It restores the self-regulation mechanisms of the body, which is followed by an emotional settling and eventually, cognitive insight and attribution of meaning may occur. Calatonia is a pioneer method created by the Hungarian physician Pethö Sándor as an intervention to treat traumatized patients in refugee camps (WWII), in the mid s. Later, Sandor incorporated his somatic work in his practice as a Jungian psychotherapist in Brazil, because of its effectiveness as a means of accessing and integrating the unconscious and developing somatic awareness. A complete Calatonia takes about 25 minutes, and can therefore be used in every session, especially at the initial stages of the psychotherapeutic treatment. It is a noninvasive somatic work that respects client s boundaries, and yet, fosters deep changes, leading to a sense of well-being and spiritual connexion. Content: Basic Calatonia feet, hands, face and head; warm-up group exercises; ethics, guidelines and theoretical frame of reference. ANITA RIBEIRO-BLANCHARD ( has practiced for 28 years in the UK, USA and Brazil. She is an Integrative Psychotherapist (UKCP), a member of the Chiron Association for Body Psychotherapists (CABP) and EABP, and a graduate member of the British Psychological Society (BPS). She practices and teaches Dr Petho Sandor s non-invasive Calatonia and Subtle Touch method (Ribeiro-Blanchard, 2010). Date: Sat/Sun Oct 8th/9th 2011 The fee for the course is 190
3 Body Psychotherapy Group Experience for Practicing Psychotherapists and Counsellors : bringing body psychotherapy, relational psychoanalytic thinking, transpersonal teachings and practice to the therapeutic relationship. Facilitator: Robert Downes This weekend offers participants the opportunity to experience body psychotherapy in a group setting. You will have the opportunity to work on personal issues whilst gaining insight into the work of a body psychotherapist. An effective way to learn about the practice of body psychotherapy is to see and experience a body psychotherapist in action, and then to ask questions. Why did you offer physical contact? What were you thinking theoretically? What was it that you noticed about the body that invited such an intervention? Personal work opportunities will be broken up with time to reflect on the ideas, skills and practice of body psychotherapy. This workshop will be ideal for those who want a taste of this particular approach to psychotherapy. Robert Downes is a UKCP Accredited Body Psychotherapist bringing body psychotherapy, relational psychoanalytic thinking alongside transpersonal teachings and practice to the therapeutic relationship. He has a private psychotherapy and supervision practice, as well as working as a therapist in a London school. He teaches both in the UK and abroad. Belly Dance Therapy A One Day Workshop: Integrating body psychotherapy with skills from dance and movement Facilitator: Ruth Cowan This workshop will be useful to psychotherapists who want to work with women using bodywork in a highly sensitive, safe and respectful manner without touch. It focuses on the pelvic area where there can be much armouring to protect dormant trauma. Slow bodywork exercises, focusing on the breath and guided visualisations may allow memories or sounds to emerge in order to be explored and held. Simple, slow belly dance movements of isolating the pelvis, ribs, or shoulders are used mindfully to connect with the body in an internal felt sense leading to dialogue with this internal relationship. Some theory will be included regarding body armouring as necessary protection and the need to respect its existence. The skills learnt will be valuable techniques to use with clients who have body image issues and or to explore the connection to the pelvis, where much creativity and aliveness lies. It can be useful for women who are trying to conceive, before and after pregnancy, before and after gynaecological surgery or after trauma to this area, if appropriate. Working with belly dance therapy is a way to aid and support the process of re-embodiment to help heal dissociation, alienation and objectification in relation to the body. Ruth is an Integrative Body Psychotherapist and Supervisor in private practice and has facilitated groups in various settings since 1991 e.g. substance misuse and mental health groups. She has facilitated Belly Dance Therapy Groups for women since 2003 privately and for organisations where she aims to integrate Body Psychotherapy with her skills from her background in dance and movement. She is passionate about working in a respectful, holding and sensitive way enabling safety and exploration. Dates Sat/Sun Nov 5th/6th, 2011 The fee for the course is 190 Date: Sat Nov 26th, 2011 Time: 10am-5.30pm The fee for this course is 95
4 The Borderline Dynamic and the Body A One day CPD seminar Facilitator: Tom Warnecke Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is an elusive and puzzling phenomenon. Borderline patterns of organisation are active across the continuum of intrapsychic and interpersonal fields and borderline relationships appear equally challenging for clients and therapists alike. Both may feel attacked, invaded, helpless, misunderstood or unappreciated by the other. But the borderline dynamic is also particularly apparent as a bodily experience for both client and therapist. Hyperarousal and catastrophic anxieties, both cardinal features of BPD, suggest disturbances of very basic functions and indicate that the organism is in a state of somatic dis-organisation. Chronic dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system, a lack of psychomotor skills and inadequate surface boundaries reflect deficiencies in psycho-affective maturation and failures to develop a differentiated psyche-soma relationship. In the therapeutic relationship, body and psyche of the therapist are impacted by and respond to such disorganised or dissociated psyche and body states. This seminar explores clinical perspectives to psychological and somatic phenomena and disturbances commonly experienced by borderline individuals and their therapists from a relational and embodied perspective. Participants are invited to contribute clinical case material for exploration in the group. Tom Warnecke (UKCP, ECP, EABP) trained in Gestalt Therapy and subsequently with David Boadella at the International Institute for Biosynthesis. In his workshops, he utilizes movement work to explore psyche-soma dynamics and make mind-body relations accessible. He has worked in community mental health services and developed a relational - somatic approach to borderline dynamics (In Contemporary Body Psychotherapy: The Chiron Approach, Ed. Hartley, Routledge). He maintains a psychotherapy practice in London and teaches contemporary body psychotherapy in Croatia and as a visiting tutor in various settings. His publications include several journal papers and book chapters ( He is a vice chair of UKCP. Date: Sat Dec 3rd, 2011 The fee for this course is 95 CABP Seminars 2011 Jung and Somatic Integration in Psychotherapy Introducing Calatonia Facilitator: Anita Ribeiro-Blanchard Throughout Jung s writings we find ideas on the relationship between psyche & soma, spirit & matter. This talk will explore some of these concepts and also compare them with recent neuroscience findings. The lecture will introduce the technique known as Calatonia (also known as Subtle Touch Therapy ).The method integrates a psychophysical approach with CG Jung s analytical psychology. The lecture will include brief practical exercises, film clips, discussion and questions. Anita will also run a weekend experiential workshop on Calatonia on 8 and 9 October ANITA RIBEIRO-BLANCHARD has practiced internationally for 28 years as an Integrative Psychotherapist (UKCP) and is a member of the CABP, EABP, and of the British Psychological Society. She practices and teaches Dr Petho Sandor s non-invasive Calatonia method. Date: Fri Sept 9th, 2011 Venue: London please contact us for details Time: 7pm-9.15pm the Fee for this seminar is 30. Including the Body in Psychotherapy: Acquiring Touch Skills Facilitator: Kathrin Stauffer Touch is a way of expanding communication beyond the verbal, which can open up parts that are not accessible to verbal communication, and help bring them into words. Touch thus has the potential of deepening a therapeutic process. However we need to attend to skills in touching, and to debate when, how and whom to touch. This seminar will give an overview of possible therapeutic intentions when using touch. We will also do some practical exercises to develop touch skills. Kathrin Stauffer PhD, UKCP, is the author of Anatomy & Physiology for Psychotherapists: Connecting Body & Soul. Originally a research biochemist, she retrained at the Chiron Centre for Body Psychotherapy. She works in private practice as a body psychotherapist, biodynamic massage therapist, trainer and supervisor. Date: Sat Oct 29, 2011 Venue: London please contact us for details Time: 2pm-5pm the Fee for this course is 35
