3 The programme was established in 1996 as the UN21 Awards and renamed United Nations Secretary-General Awards in The examples the award winners set are meant to inspire colleagues to replicate good practices and in making strides to invigorate the way the Organization delivers its programmes and services. By rewarding initiatives that have the potential to shape UN culture, the Secretary-General recognizes staff members dedication and efforts. The United Nations Secretary-General Awards recognize the outstanding work of Secretariat staff members who contribute above and beyond the call of duty and advance innovative projects. The Secretary-General will host this year s Awards Ceremony on United Nations Staff Day, 25 October 2016, where the recipients will be announced and recognized.

4 THIS YEAR, THE UN SECRETARY-GENERAL WILL BE PRESENTED IN THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES MANAGING CHANGE Honouring an individual staff member or a team for being especially adept at implementing transformational change with the goal of creating a more efficient and truly global Secretariat. COLLEGIALITY Honouring an individual staff member for creating a positive and productive work environment that allows everyone to do their best on behalf of the United Nations. COURAGE Honouring an individual staff member or a team for accomplishing their tasks and upholding the values of the United Nations in a physically dangerous environment. GREENING THE UN Honouring an individual staff member or a team for ensuring that the United Nations acts in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. 5 ANY STAFF MEMBER OF THE GLOBAL UN SECRETARIAT CAN NOMINATE THEMSELVES, ANOTHER STAFF MEMBER, OR A TEAM. Visit sgawards.un.org to access all the information and the online nomination form Nominators will be asked several questions, including details of the project and the nominated staff member(s), depending on the category of the nomination. A verifying officer, selected by the nominator, will be requested by the UNSG Awards team to confirm the content of the submission. 6 For me, personally the award provided a sense of responsibility and encouragement to continue to put the spotlight on vulnerable people dealing with the impact of climate change. Jaspreet Kindra, winner 2015 for Teamwork [Climate Summit Communications Initiative] Attending the ceremony, being awarded by the SG, along with Anders, and clapped by colleagues who were attending, both in the room and via VTC, made me, my team, my family and my friends, proud of my job and being a UN official. I will never forget any second of that event for the rest of my life. Alessandro Rini, winner 2015 for Creativity, together with Anders Brynnel [Field Operational Safety Risk Management Programme] I feel privileged to do my advocacy work, and I feel my deepest gratitude to the UN for having awarded me the prize. The recognition often gives me that extra little push that I need, when I feel in low spirits, to help me continue advocating for the families I represent.... I would encourage others to submit the names of candidates to receive the SG Award this year.
