7 SCIENCE OF COMPASSION Dr. Richard Davidson, neuroscientist, studied the brains of meditating Tibetan monks Compassion meditation over time seems to change the brain so that it is always ready to respond to another s suffering
8 SCIENCE OF COMPASSION Similar results by psychologist Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., author of Emotional Intelligence Neural activity in a key center in the brain s system for happiness jumped by 700 to 800 % by meditators Increase of 10 to 15 percent for beginners Rick Hanson, MD, author of Buddha s Brain Understanding neuroplasticity: what the brain does a lot, the brain does well
9 WHAT INCREASES COMPASSION AND SPIRIT OF GENEROSITY IN PEOPLE Challenge by the Dalai Lama What the world needs most in our global age is new brain science that clarifies the causal basis and beneficial effects of compassion Initial research studies begin to show that even novices capacity to respond with active compassion can increase with practise
10 WHAT INCREASES COMPASSION AND SPIRIT OF GENEROSITY IN PEOPLE Dr. David DeSteno s research suggests that the compassion we feel for others is not solely a function of what is happening to them and if our minds draw an association with a victim, the compassion we feel is amplified Therefore, simply learning to mentally categorize one another in terms of commonalities would generate greater compassion
