Engagement: Magic or Measurable? Dan Comer, M.A. Barium Springs Training Group Asheville, NC
Where do you fit right now?

Barium Springs Provides a full continuum of community based programs ranging from early intervention to post adoption support Training and Curriculum Development Creator of the Six Principles of Partnership, the foundation for Differential Response in NC and elsewhere in the U.S. Currently providing training, curriculum development, technical assistance, and coaching for DR planning and implementation in NC, CT, WI and Canada Partners in Change (Engagement training) Facilitating Partnership and Change (Sup training) Platinum Rule (parallel process training)
Who s Here? State/Province Role Hopes for this session?
Engagement is A process in which the social worker creates an environment that enables a client to enter into a helping relationship and actively work toward change. The degree to which a client is committed to collaboratively working toward change. A series of intentional interventions that work together in an integrated way to promote safety, permanency and well being for children, youth and families. The participation necessary to obtain optimal benefits from an intervention.
The Yatchmenoff Study Receptivity Expectancy Investment Working Relationship Mistrust
Key factors in engaging clients in child welfare services Setting mutually satisfactory goals Providing services that clients view as relevant and helpful Focusing on client skills rather than insights Spending sufficient time with clients to demonstrate skills and provide necessary solutions (Dawson and Berry 2002)
Successfully engaging involuntary clients requires: Being clear and specific about expectations Providing choices when possible Asking for overt client commitment Involving clients in goal and task selection Rooney (1992)
Characteristics of Family Engagement Family resources and kinship connections are maximized. The family actively participates in solution and outcome focused planning and decision making that is needs driven and strengths based. Interactions with families are open, transparent, and non judgmental. The relationship between families and professionals is viewed as a partnership. The Child Protection Best Practice Bulletin (2007)
Partnership Supports Barriers What are the elements, attitudes and supports that lead to effective partnerships? What are the challenges and barriers that get in the way of successful partnerships?
Six Principles of Partnership Everyone Desires Respect Everyone Needs to Be Heard Everyone Has Strengths Judgments Can Wait Partners Share Power Partnership is a Process
Principles of Partnership are Universal Differential Response All Child Welfare Supervision (Parallel Process) Change Management Agency Structure and Processes (Parallel Process) System to System (courts, schools, MH ) Cultural Humility
Inside Out Training Personal experience with the Principle Make connections back to the work you do Share tools that allow people to put the Principles into practice (EVP) Practice the tool/principle Make a plan to apply the learning
Stephen Covey Seven Habits of Highly Effective People What do Principles do? Listen carefully Eric Fenner: How you think is how you act
Measurable or Magic? Maxine and Penny How s the engagement? What is your evidence?
Your Principle Did Maxine put it into practice? Behaviors which demonstrated the principle? What could she have specifically done to improve her practice of your specific principle?
Tools for this principle: Model the respect you would like to receive Meet people where they are (Explorer, Vacationer, Prisoner) Look for positive intent Respect and incorporate ideas of the other person I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking me... All I ask is that you respect me as a human being. Jackie Robinson Everyone Desires Respect Move slowly and make small adjustments where possible
Two Ways to Listen Autobiographical Filtering what we hear through our own frame of reference, personal experiences and our own agenda Listening with the intent to reply, rebut, inform, collect information, convince, persuade, control or manipulate Empathic Striving to get inside the other person s frame of reference in order to really understand their point of view Listening with the intent of seeing the world through their eyes and understanding how they feel
Benefits of Empathic Listening Resistance diminishes Communication is more genuine Allows recipient to work through their own thoughts and feelings; and Create solutions
Video Task Guide Boston Public Group A Group B View this video clip, taking note of the techniques the principal uses to portray he is concerned and listening See if you can determine Mr. Harper s underlying intention in the interaction
Genuine listening means suspending memory, desire, and judgment and, for a moment at least, existing for the other person. Michael Nichols Everyone Needs to be Heard Tools for this principle: Slow down Focus on your purpose Intend to really listen Seek first to understand 10 second rule
Tools for this principle: Be intentional and genuine in your search for strengths: Observation Ask the right questions Have a broad definition Utilize the strengths you find to build solutions. Look for exceptions to the problem or issue. It is not our purpose to become each other; it is to recognize each other, to learn to see the other and honor him for what he is. Hermann Hesse Everyone Has Strengths
IUMRING TQ GQNGIUIQNS
FEATURE FILMS ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS
Judgments Can Wait Acknowledge the paradox Delay as long as possible Hold your judgments lightly
Tools for the this principle: From a worldly point of view, there is no mistake so great as that of being always right. Samuel Butler Hold judgments lightly Seek alternative explanations Not knowing stance Scaling Judgments Can Wait
Compliance isn t change. Richard Gelles Tools for this principle: Consider the power, both real and perceived, that you have in a family s life. Strive to share that power through your words and actions. Use true brainstorming Partners Share Power
Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death. Anais Nin Tools for this principle: Be intentional Pay attention Transparency Acknowledge mistakes Honor yourself and others in any processby compassionately applying these principles Partnership is a Process
