Zacks and Rae Sung Chang US Application No.: 62/053,586 - UM-33991/US-1/PRO Biologically active, aqueous formulation of Met12 peptide RESEARCH INTERESTS 1.! Neuroprotection and photoreceptor cell survival: We hypothesized that in the setting of retinal detachment, intrinsic neuroprotective factors are activated to oppose cell death and prolong photoreceptor survival. We have identified factors in the vitreous of retinal detachment patients which are correlated with post-operative visual acuity and may function to promote photoreceptor survival during detachment. 2.! The gut microbiome and Age-related Macular Degeneration: We tested the hypothesis that alterations in the gut microbiota in AMD affect disease pathogenesis by performing a casecontrol observational study sequencing gut bacterial DNA. In preliminary bioinformatic analysis, metabolic pathways inferred by the constituent bacteria implicate differential function in lipid and drug metabolism, carotenoid biosynthesis, chemotaxis and cell death. 3.! Alterations in inflammatory cytokines in AMD: I hypothesize that inflammatory cytokines in the vitreous promote growth of choroidal neovascularization and that alterations in the vitreous cytokine profile underlie changes in disease progression. To investigate the modulation of the inflammatory cytokine profile by anti-vegf therapy, I am initiating a prospective longitudinal study with the goal of tailoring the choice of anti-vegf therapy and dosing schedule to optimize treatment outcome for each patient. 4.!
