1 Collaborative Care Panel Discussion Series: Speaker Bios Collaborative Oncology Session: Thursday April 21, 2016, 7 pm to 8:30 pm Dr. Daniel Lander, ND Daniel received a Bachelor of Science degree, with honours, in nutritional and nutraceutical sciences form the University of Guelph. He then went on to graduate from CCNM in During this time he developed a strong interest in the care of patients with cancer and went on to complete a two-year hospital-based residency at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Upon completion of his residency, he joined CTCA as a staff naturopathic physician where he continued to practice and supervise residents for an additional two years. Daniel returned to CCNM as a full-time faculty member in He is currently an Associate Professor teaching naturopathic oncology and clinical nutrition, as well as supervising 4th year interns in the Adjunctive Cancer Care Shift at the RSNC. As a fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology (FABNO), he is one of only a handful of naturopathic doctors in Canada who are board certified in naturopathic oncology. Daniel is a strong proponent of naturopathic oncology as an area of focus within naturopathic medicine and has recently held two consecutive terms on the Board of Directors of the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians. He is also a strong advocate for the integration of naturopathic support into conventional cancer care in Canada and since returning to Toronto has diligently worked to build bridges within the oncology medical system in the GTA and foster relationships with local oncologists.
2 Dr. Martina Trinkaus, MD, FRCPC Martina studied Life Sciences and Physical Health and Education at Queen s University prior to entering Medical School in Toronto. Her internal medicine residency was completed at U of T along with her fellowship in Hematology. Currently she is an assistant professor at U of T Practicing in malignant hematology at St. Michael's Hospital and currently functions as the adult Hematology Training Program director with a focus on medical education. Dr. Akbar Khan, MD Dr. Khan is a graduate of the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine (1992). After completion of his family medicine training in 1994, he joined a palliative home care team at his local hospital. This is how his focus on cancer patients began. In 2006, Dr. Khan co-founded Medicor Cancer Centres, the first integrated private cancer clinic of its kind in Canada. Since 2007, Dr. Khan gained international recognition for his work with the non-chemo drug dichloroacetate (DCA). He is privileged to be the first doctor in the world to prescribe off-label DCA to treat cancer with positive results. As a result, he now has the most DCA experience of any physician in the world with over 1500 cancer patients. He is also the first in the world to demonstrate the curative potential of DCA when used as an adjuvant to chemotherapy or radiotherapy (one case published, others pending). Dr. Khan also usess low dose naltrexone (LDN) in his cancer practice. He has published the world s first paper showing complete remission of adenoid cystic carcinoma using LDN:

Khan A, J Palliat Med Apr 12. [Epub ahead of print] Kathy Vu, BScPharm, ACPR, PharmD Kathy is the Clinical Lead for Safety Initiatives in the Systemic Treatment Program at Cancer Care Ontario. She is involved with provincial initiatives to improve the safe delivery of chemotherapy, including incident reporting and the safe dispensing of oral chemotherapy. Kathy graduated from the University of Toronto where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in She later went on to complete a hospital residency and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Prior to joining Cancer Care Ontario, Kathy was a Clinical Pharmacy Practitioner at St. Michael's Hospital for 12 years. She practiced is in the area of Hematology and Oncology where she provided care to cancer patients with complex medication needs. Her areas of specialization include the management of pain, nausea and vomiting and thromboembolism. She also managed
4 an ambulatory anticoagulation clinic where she provided INR monitoring, warfarin dosing and education to patients under her care. Kathy currently holds the status of Assistant Professor at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. She is a lecturer, facilitator and teaching associate for the Doctor of Pharmacy and PharmD for Pharmacists programs. In addition, Kathy is also actively involved with the Continuing Professional Development Program as the Academic Director for the Oncology Program and Course Coordinator for the International Pharmacy Program. Patient-Centred Care Session: Thursday May 19, 2016, 7 pm to 8:30 pm Dr. Caroline Bearss ND, MEd, DOmp, BBEC, MBA (healthcare) pending Dr. Bearss, ND is a graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and has been a practicing Naturopathic Doctor since Dr Bearss, ND has an eclectic Naturopathic and Osteopathic manual therapy practice in Muskoka, Ontario. There she lives with her family, daughter and doodle, enjoying small community life and hiking nearby river trails. Secondly, Dr. Bearss, ND practices in Markham, Ontario with Dr. John Gannage, MD, where she predominately see clients with concerns around Autism Spectrum Disorder and other Neurodevelopment disorders. She is MAPs certified. Dr. Bearss, ND uses Auricular Medicine Testing (a form of autonomic response testing developed by Dr. Paul Nogier, MD), Environmental Medicine testing, Dark Field Live Cell Microscopy and other laboratory testing. In 2007 she became a certified Building Biologist and Environmental Consultant (biological impacts of the built environment). Caroline offers home, office and building consultations, creating healthy ecological living and work environments. Being a Building Biologist, with special interest in Electromagnetic Radiation, has led Caroline to being a guest speaker for the OAND, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, and Dr. Walter Crinnion, ND. Caroline s articles can be found in the CAND s Vital Link, OAND s Pulse and on the Canadian Naturopathic Foundation s website. Dr. Bearss, ND is dedicated to working directly with patients to provide healthcare, advocacy and education. Dr. Bearss, ND is also keenly interested in the greater context political, socio-economic and cultural systems - which govern the nature of and experience of Naturopathic Medicine.
5 Dr. Louise McCrindle, B.Sc (Hons), ND Dr. Louise McCrindle, B.Sc. (Hons), ND, maintains a busy naturopathic practice in Toronto and is employed at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine where she lectures, supervises and leads the Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Focus Shift at the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic. Louise is co-author of The Completee Fibromyalgia Health, Diet Guide and Cookbook. Cynthia Harding (Patient) Cynthia has been a patient at the CCNM s Robert Schad Clinic since the spring of She had been quite sick for over a year, and her MD suggested that she see a Naturopathic Doctor in a teaching capacity. Cynthia is a retired accountant (since June 2014), and worked on a very largeproject with the Federal government as a change management agent. Formerly a Girl Guide leader and Commissioner, Cynthia is also past Treasurer of her local Anglican church.
