Palliative Care experiences, I became the life member of Palliative care Society of India in the year 2001 (IAPC Indian Association of Palliative Care) and started Palliative Clinic privately at Kakinada (A.P.) in the year 2002 and started the Palliative Care clinic work at Government General Hospital, Kakinada in the year So my total experience in Palliative care is 7 years and the experience at Govt. Hospital Unit is since 4 years. It is the first Government Hospital in the Andhra Pradesh State to start the Palliative care work for the Cancer patients. I am asked to start the Palliative care work at Osmania General Hospital, Hyderabad in case I continue my services there. This is about my Palliative Care service details. The history of the department of Anaesthesia at Kakinada dates back to the time period to 1960, when the Govt. Hospital at Kakinada was a district hospital. The department of Anaesthesia was managed by an Asst. Surgeon in those days. With the starting of Rangaraya Medical College in 1958 as a private college the Govt. Hospital had been up graded as a teaching hospital in 1962, with Dr. James Paul as Head of the department. Later in 1995, Dr. Bhaskar Naidu headed the department as the first civil surgeon specialist. In 1967, when Dr. Bhaskar Naidu left for Australia, Dr. James Paul again headed the department as a civil surgeon specialist. In 1970, Dr.James Paul was transferred to Guntur, and then Dr. C. V. Subba Rao becomes the first professor of Anaesthesiology at Kakinada and retired from service in Between 1975 and 1978, no civil surgeon was posted, the department being managed by Dr.T.Gopal Krishna first in capacity of an Asst. Surgeon and later in 1977 as Deputy civil surgeon. During these years, much difficulty was experienced in managing the department, as the department did not have qualified anesthetists apart from Dr.Gopala Krishna. It was during this period the Andhra University post graduate commission visited Kakinada, to assess the feasibility of starting postgraduate course at Rangaraya Medical College. The

24 first batch of two postgraduate students, one each for diploma and degree courses, joined the department of Anaesthesia in January Dr. Premlatha Krishna Murthy was promoted and posted as professor at Kakinada in 1978, on her return from England. When she left for Visakhapatnam in August 1978, there was again a gap in the professorial post, subsequently Dr.M.Sriram worked as Professor at Kakinada from September 1978 to December Again Dr. T.Gopala Krishna headed the department as Deputy Civil surgeon, who was regularly promoted as professor of Anaesthesiology in December In 1981, second unit of Anaesthesiology was started, Dr.A.S.R.Murthy joining as professor. In June 1983, Dr.K.Harinadh Babu took over as head of the Department of Anaesthesia, when Dr.T.Grpala Krishna was transferred to Kurnool. In September 1983, Dr.T.Gopala Krishna again was posted as head of the Department of Anaesthesia, which position he retained till his retirement in June In 1985, 3 rd unit of Anaesthesia was sanctioned and Dr.A.S.R.Murthy joined once again as professor. Between 1985 and 1987, Dr.D.V.K.Menon was the head of the department. In 1989, Dr. D.Viswanathan joined as professor in the 3 rd unit, replacing Dr. A.S.R.Murthy. On 16 th August 1991, Dr.T.Gopala Krishna was promoted as Additional Director and posted as Principal, Rangaraya Medical College. Dr.A.V.S.N. Murphy was in-charge of the Head of the Department for few months. Dr.P.Jagga Rao became the head of the department in 1992 and he was in that post up to Dr.B.Raghavendra Rao became the Head of the Department 1994 and he was in the post till his retirement in Dr.R.Ranga Rao joined the charge as the Head of the department in 1996and he continued in the post till Dr.V.Sukumar was posted professor in the department and he worked here between Dr.V.Harinatha Babu took the charge as the Head of the department in 2000 and he retired in June In July 2008, Dr.R.Pratap became the HOD of Anesthesia and became Principal, RMC, Kakinada Dr. A.S. Kameswara Rao is transferred to Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad as HOD in July 2009 and joined as Profesor and HOD at Kakinada in July 2010 and taken charge as Vice Principal, RMC, Kakinada in September The other 2 Professors are Dr. B. Sowbhagya Lakshmi and Dr. T. Prem Sagar. This department got the Medical Council of India recognition in On 2 nd August 1991 Kakinada city branch of Indian Society of Anaesthesiology was formed with Dr.T.Gopala Krishna as President and Dr.Viswanathan as vice president and this city branch became very active and till today it received Best City Branch award in the state thrice. Dr.A.S.Kameswara Rao. Professor of Anaesthesiology in the Hon. Secretary of I.S.A- AP state and he had the unique honors of getting three gold medals at National level for making A.P state branch as the best in the county for there consecutive years 2. TEACHING FACILITIES: The department posses two sub libraries- one organized by the department and the other by Indian society of anaesthesiologist, city branch of Kakinada. We have got one overhead projector and one L.C.D. projector with two desktop computers. We have got one C.P.R.- Mannequin, donated by one N.G.O. from Peddapuram. 7.. Ventilators One I-VENT ventilator and one PURITAN- BENNETT ventilator in our R.I.C.U (RESPIRATORY INTENSIVE CARE UNIT) Fibreoptic Laryngoscope has been ordered for. We have got one H.P. multimonitor and now we are rendering Anaesthesia services for open-heart surgeries also. PAIN & PALLIATIVE CLINIC: Dr.A.S.Kameswara Rao, Professor of Anaesthesiology took the initiative in starting the first Pain & Palliative care Clinic in A.P. State in a Govt. set up with Narcotic License and with free supply of Narcotic medicines to the needy Cancer Pain patients. The Clinic was inaugurated by the Hon ble Chief Minister Dr.Y.S.Rajaseshara Reddy in the month of Feb 2005 and started functioning from May FUTURE PLANS We want to organize the department as DEPARTMENT of ANAESTHESIOLOGY, CRITICAL CARE and PAIN MANAGEMENT and we want to make the pain clinic as the best in the state.
