14 Joining the Society Voices Improve transparency, involve more young people Focus on register data and cost- effec3veness. This is probably important in order to gain credibility for the profession in a :me where the funding is discussed daily Promote educa:on for young spine specialists and recruit them as members Go beyond the geographic distribu:on, invite non- members and spread the philosophy of the society Simple approval by a member, e- mail :ck box rather than formal leder Improve the possibili:es for research collabora3ons Reach out to other non- surgical socie:es Eliminate the emphasis to region, open the society to interna:onal par:cipa:on Accept junior members Encourage trainees to join at an earlier stage or associate trainee membership at a reduced price Increase access for senior trainees commided to spine There is a need to welcome non- surgical specialists

16 Summary There was interest in a 2 day sub- speciality mee:ng The first of these will now occur in April/May % of the members responding are spine surgeons The responding spine surgeons are 75% orthopaedic and 25% neurosurgical by background Many wish non- surgical topics to become more relevant
17 Feature Requests comments Give more considera:on to non- surgical topics in the congresses. I would like to be more involved in processes. If you are not very good associated with members it is difficult to get in touch. Start the Travelling Fellowship system again! Easier par:cipa:on for Non- European members More chance to par3cipate Members should have an opportunity to work in the society, eg as a member of commidees. The society should beder try to give basic scien:sts the feeling that their work is also appreciated and important. Many basic scien:sts do not feel this way. More intensive con:nuous and advanced educa3on. Fee reduc:on for third world countries More involvement opportuni3es for scien3sts. Develop a training program and accredita3on process that is mandatory for European surgeons Different fees for members from different countries. Beder educa:onal ac:vi:es, satellite mee:ngs, symposia etc. Broad based, member oriented, protec:ng professionalism, ac:ve in lobbying for spine related health care, producing guidelines on controversial issues not just an congress organizer!
18 Recommendations We will introduce 2 day mee:ngs in addi:on to the Annual mee:ng star:ng 2014 Young surgeons and scien:sts will be the future of the society, we will introduce strategies to have them more ac:vely involved We have listened to the membership and will con:nue to listen

Par:cipants from outside Europe would like to have reduced mee:ng fees because of their higher travel costs Many Non- European par:cipants ask for the benefits of a membership (compared to other socie:es) More workshops and also fellowships especially for young surgeons/researchers are oqen wanted
31 Original Voices Billions of people suffer form non specific low back pain, and there are hardly any lectures about this. The propor:on of lectures must reflect the number of people suffering. More space for conserva:ve treatment of spine, mainly for scoliosis As spinal disorders management is becoming more pluridisciplinary, it would be nice if session topics and lectures would reflect the current prac:ce. Today, based on the speakers on the podium, it is like if only surgeons are taking care of spine pa:ents. More thorough selec:on of abstracts to avoid several lectures about one and the same study by the same author I wish the society to offer more workshops, cadaver labs, clinical/research fellowships at low cost for young surgeons or residents. Membership fee of 140 EUR per year is not a big problem if this means to be involved in ac:vi:es, fellowships and research around Europe. Increase the profile of basic science More informa3on To my knowledge there are no courses run which explore the conserva:ve management/rehabilita:on of pa:ents with spinal pain. Considering that up to 85% of pa:ents with spinal pain are managed conserva:vely there is very lidle training directed towards the majority of pa:ents with spinal pain. Interna:onal fellowship would be beder for us, young surgeons
