Once we have received your application form we will confirm in writing whether or not you have been allocated a course place. It is up to you to secure your paid release. Employment legislation entitles you to payment of wages etc. for training you undertake that is connected with your trade union duties (negotiating, representing people etc.) However, if you have been told by your employer that you will not receive paid release, you must raise the issue with your regional officer before you attend the course. Unite Education is not responsible for obtaining your paid release. course bookings will be made on a first come first served basis

3 A MESSAGE TO UNITE MEMBERS Welcome to your Wales education brochure for. Inside you will find all the information you need to access first class Unite reps education. Whether you are a new rep or a re-elected one there will be a course that will help and support you in your important role. All of our courses are held at Unite offices across Wales. This ensures there are always courses you can access that are close to your home or workplace. For Workplace Reps and Health and Safety Reps there is clear 20 day training pathway with courses split into 4 modules. These certificate courses provide a clear and structured training pathway. Upon completion you will have the skills and knowledge needed to represent your members to the highest standards. In addition to the fantastic courses for our Workplace Reps, Health and Safety Reps, Equality Reps and Learning Reps, we can also run bespoke courses and bite size training upon request. Please contact your local officer or myself if you wish to pursue this. All of our training is delivered in partnership with Adult Learning Wales. Our courses are run by experienced tutors, in an informal learning environment. Activists are able to share their own experiences and learn from each other. Our training will provide you with the skills, knowledge and tools you need to fight back and win better terms and conditions in your workplace. 1

7 Pensions Stage 1 This course is designed to provide an understanding of pensions to enable Workplace representatives to develop their representational skills in basic pension provision. 9 Equality & Diversity Designed to give all Unite Reps the confidence and knowledge to address equality and diversity issues, the course provides a comprehensive overview of equality in the workplace. On completion of the course Reps should be able to: Recognise equality issues within the workplace Know what constitutes discrimination, harassment and bullying Challenge their perception of equality & diversity Understand the key points of new equalities legislation, measures and legal decisions Decide how best to support workers in response to new equalities legislation Use interviewing techniques to deal with individual and workplace equality issues Develop equality policies and practice Cardiff 28 September 26 October Wrexham 28 September 26 October Union Learning Reps Stage 1 This course is designed to be the core initial training for all Unite Union Learning Reps (ULRs). It helps them develop the basic knowledge and skills needed as a new Rep, enabling them to work with colleagues in the workplace to analyse training needs. The course forms a solid foundation for the new ULR to develop their skills and their own personal development. 10 Union Learning Reps Stage 2 This course continues the core essential training for all Unite Union Learning Reps (ULRs). It helps them to further develop the knowledge and skills needed as a ULR in the workplace working with management, learning providers and other organisations. The course completes the foundation for the ULR and prepares the ULR to develop more specialised skills and knowledge. Wrexham 6 November 4 December 5 Tuesdays Cardiff 17 June 15 July 5 Mondays Branch Secretary/Branch Officials Course The Branch Secretary is a key player in the Unite team. The concept of this course is to develop Branch Secretaries within Unite by providing them with the knowledge and skills, and nurturing their passion, to drive forward the ideology of our union, to develop our activist base and grow and strengthen our membership. This course is designed for all new Branch Secretaries, and for those who have not attended the course recently. 11 Additional Courses CHALLENGING BULLYING & HARASSMENT Bullying and harassment is a major problem in many workplaces. 12 National Courses Unite s commitment to delivering courses recognises the different circumstances in which our reps find themselves. This is why there are various modes of delivery for the same course. Residential Courses are for those who simply cannot dovetail into our regional provision whether that is for geographical or domestic or other reasons. Our normal practice for national residential courses, exclusively held in The View Hotel, Eastbourne or Esher Place, kick off at hrs on Monday and finish with a session on Action Plans at Noon on the Friday. You will appreciate that being residential students are expected to participate in a couple of evening sessions which are less formal.
