4 Physiotherapy Commissioned Training Program (2011/12) Physiotherapy Updates: Breathlessness Management, Oncology and Palliative Care Speakers Biography Dr. Anna SPATHIS Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge Dr Anna Spathis joined the Addenbrookes Hospital Palliative Care Service in January Since qualifying from Cambridge in 1992, she gained both MRCP and MRCGP, trained in Palliative Medicine in the London and Eastern regions, and worked as a consultant in Oxford for 3 years. Anna has a particular interest in the palliation of advanced non-malignant disease, and is the lead author of an Oxford University Press Specialist Handbook entitled End of life care in respiratory disease: from advanced disease to bereavement. She is an experienced and enthusiastic provider of palliative care education and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in She has a research interest in the management of cancer-related fatigue, and was instrumental in setting up a multicentre clinical trial evaluating the role of modafinil in the treatment of fatigue in patients with lung cancer. Ms Catherine MOFFAT Respiratory Specialist Physiotherapist Catherine qualified as a Physiotherapist in She led the in-patient medical physiotherapy team at Addenbrookes Hospital before joining the Cambridge Breathlessness Intervention Service in Catherine teaches breathlessness self management strategies to patients with intractable breathlessness irrespective of diagnosis. She has an interest in chronic hyperventilation and breathing pattern disorders and is a qualified Buteyko Breathing Instructor. Catherine has co-authored on articles regarding development of a breathlessness service and non-pharmacological management of breathlessness. She continues to work in the main Addenbrookes Hospital at weekends, providing acute respiratory physiotherapy to the adult and paediatric wards and intensive care units.
5 Ms Sonia CONNORS Palliative Care Physiotherapist Sonia trained and qualified as a Physiotherapist in Newcastle upon Tyne, England in She then moved to London, to work at The Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel. Her professional background has included hospital and community work, with her special interest in Palliative Care developing when she returned to Newcastle in She has worked at St Oswald s Hospice, Newcastle, and in 2001 moved to North Tyneside General Hospital, to lead the Breathlessness Management Service for lung cancer patients, where she still works. She also works with the North Tyneside Specialist Palliative Care Team in the community, providing Specialist Palliative Care Physiotherapy. She holds a mixed caseload including heart failure patients, and finds the use of non pharmacological breathlessness management strategies helpful for this particular patient group. She has had work published in relation to non - pharmacological breathlessness management approaches and has undertaken a piece of qualitative research into user views of a breathlessness management service. Dr. CHAN Kin Sang KEC SD (Primary & Community Health Care)/ HHH COS (Med) Dr KS Chan graduated in University of Hong Kong in He is the Chief of Service of Department of Medicine of Haven of Hope Hospital and Service Director (Primary & Community Health Care) of Kowloon East Cluster. He was dual accredited as specialist in Respiratory Medicine and Palliative Medicine. He received post-graduate training in Respiratory Medicine in USA, and Palliative Medicine in United Kingdom. In chest field, he is currently the Governor of American College of Chest Physician (HK & Macau Chapter) and Immediate Past Chairman of Hong Kong Lung Foundation. In palliative care field, he is the Chairman of Palliative Medicine subcommittee under Hong Kong College of Physicians and Chairman of Central Committee in Palliative Care of Hospital authority. He was the author of the chapter Palliative medicine in Respiratory disease in Oxford textbook of Palliative Medicine, 3rd & 4th edition. His key interests include COPD, pulmonary rehabilitation, dyspnoea, clinical ethics and holistic care. Dr. Mike WONG Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology), The University of Hong Kong Master of Social Science (Clinical Psychology), The University of Hong Kong Clinical Psychologist, Psychogeriatrics Unit, Kwai Chung Hospital General Secretary, Chinese Association of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Dr. Wong provides psycho-oncology service to inpatients and outpatients of the Clinical Oncology Department, consultations to the Palliative Service of the Clinical Oncology Department, PMH and provides training and psychoeducation talks to nursing staff and patients.
6 Miss Eunice S.K. WONG, Physiotherapist I, United Christian Hospital Miss Wong is currently the Physiotherapist in-charge of the Hospice Service of United Christian Hospital. She attained BSc degree in Physiotherapy of Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1996 and later a MSc degree in Epidemiology & Biostatistic in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is also the Kowloon East cluster representative of the Working Group on Oncology and Palliative Care of PTCOC. In 2011, Miss Wong obtains support from the CWM / Nethersole Fund to pilot a program on Community Physiotherapy for Palliative Patient. Mr. Anthony KWOK Physiotherapist I, Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital Mr. Anthony Kwok is a Physiotherapist I at the Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital and has been serving as the Palliative Care Team in-charge for more than 15 years. Mr. Kwok obtained a Master Degree in Health Care from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a Master Degree in Stroke and Clinical Neurosciences from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. To incorporate East meets West Approach to Cancer and Palliative Care patients. He acquired training in Chinese and Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He also obtained a certificate in Chinese Medicine Sports Studies for Health Preservation from Hong Kong Baptist University, is an accredited acupuncturist and a qualified Qigong ( 氣功 ) instructor. Mr. Ken LEE Physiotherapist I, Tuen Mun Hospital Mr. Lee is the team leader of palliative care team at main block of Tuen Mun Hospital. He attained a Bachelor degree in Physiotherapy and a Master degree in Health Care (Physiotherapy) at HKPU. He is currently a part time PhD student at the same university and his research interests focus on the efficacy of sitting Tai Chi among the disabled population. He is one of the representatives at NTWC at the working group of oncology and palliative care in PTCOC.
