2 Welcome Dear Delegate, Welcome to the beautiful surroundings of Leeds Beckett University s Headingley Campus for the 2017 Conference Study Event and AGM. Very soon after 2016 s event finished the committee collected together your feedback and began planning this event. In this handbook you will find all the information you need for the next two days. It includes the programmes, agenda for the AGM, key locations at our venue, a list of our sponsors as well as a biography for each speaker followed by a space to make your own notes and reflections from their session. Our first Day is focussed on Service Development and Commissioning of Dietetic Services in Mental Health. On Tuesday Professor Jackie Andrade from the University of Plymouth will be speaking to us about the use of Functional Imagery Training to motivate behaviour change. We will have our AGM and then also our workshops. Over lunch time you will have the opportunity to network and visit our sponcers stands to receive updates and try out new products. This year we have a great competition - ensure that you have filled in your competition sheet. You ll need to visit each stand a get a signature from each company representative for a chance to win a great prize! Committee members carry out this work as volunteers. In addition to organising this event, they have been busy producing informative resources and guidance as well as attending high profile meetings across the UK to highlight the work of Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Dietitians. The committee has spent a lot of time organising this year s event to ensure that it meets the needs of our members and provides the best possible opportunity to learn. Whilst we have tried to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible, please bear with us if things don t always go to plan! We are excited about seeing old faces and meeting new members and we hope you enjoy the event as much as we will. We will get a chance to meet you all over lunch and if you re joining us for a meal on Monday evening. The tables are booked at Akbar s (15 Eastgate, Leeds LS2 7LY) at 7:30pm. 8 Clinical commissioning for Mental Health Dietitians June Davis BSc (Hons) RD MBA June Davis has 22 years experience working in the NHS as a Dietitian, service and professional lead, general manager for a number of service areas within the acute setting and senior project lead for several large scale change projects across London including working at NHS London. She has over 10 years experience working as Head of Therapies for large acute Trusts. These roles involved both the strategic and operational management of one of the largest therapy services in the UK as well as being at the forefront of integrating research, service delivery and education across AHP services. June has worked extensively with commissioners as an AHP lead for a cancer network to strengthen the role and contribution of AHPs. She has expertise in preparing and presenting business cases as well as generating and delivering QIPP ideas through service improvement working with and as a provider of services. June works alongside AHP service providers to establish how fit for purpose their services are and supporting these providers to develop and market their services in the best way to deliver positive outcomes for service users. June is a Director of Allied Health Solutions, National Cancer Rehabilitation Lead (part time) for Macmillan Cancer Support and a professional advisor to the Care Quality Commission. By the end of the day participants will: 1. Be able to describe commissioning processes and identify at which stages dietitians should be involved and influence. 2. Develop an understanding of how to market dietetic services and influence others. 3. Be able to identify opportunities for dietitians to be involved in leading integrated care initiatives. 4. Understand the importance of demonstrating cost effectiveness, quality, innovation and prevention and sustainability in the development of dietetic services in a competitive market. 5. Be able to describe the importance and impact of dietetic services, including the importance of service user views, to key stakeholders through the use of qualitative and quantitative outcomes. 8

10 Using Functional Imagery Training to motivate behavior change Professor Jackie Andrade Jackie Andrade is a professor of Psychology at the University of Plymouth and holds an adjunct chair at Queensland University of Technology. She has been researching the role of imagery and memory in clinical issues for over 25 years, with over 100 publications on topics ranging from obesity and addiction to post-traumatic stress disorder and awareness in anaesthesia. She co-developed Functional Imagery Training (FIT) based on extensive laboratory and field research, with a particular focus on motivation and cravings in relation to eating and physical activity. She is currently completing an NIHR-funded randomised controlled trial of FIT versus motivational interviewing for weight loss. Key learning and reflection for practice enablement 10

11 Learning Disabilities workshop session: Transitioning form Children Services to Adult Services Joanne Burke. Joanne Burke (RGN RSCN) is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in haemophilia working for the Oxford University Hospitals Foundation Trust (OUFT). She has worked extensively in both adult and children s services in the UK and Ireland. Her interest in transition started when she managed home care services for children and adults with disabilities, where she started to appreciate the importance of starting this process early in order to ensure a safe and efficient move to adult services. Returning to the UK in 2012 she was involved in the complex transition of a 16 year old with spinal injuries from hospital to home and then on to adult services. She has spoken at several conferences about transition and is on the working party for transition at OUHFT. Key learning and reflection for practice enablement.. 11

12 Mental Health workshop session: PLACE: making national assessment criteria applicable to mental health Helen Barrett Helen is the only dietitian in Dorset that covers forensic, older peoples, psychosis, perinatal, rehab, PICU and acute inpatient mental health. She is also part of an award winning diabetes education team. She currently combines this with a teaching fellow post at the University of Surrey. The changes that she recommended to NHS England are now part of the new PLACE document for Key learning and reflection for practice enablement.. 12

13 Eating Disorders workshop session: Dietetic implications of family based treatment FBT (Maudsley's programme) in the treatment of children/ adolescents with anorexia nervosa Dr Graeme O Connor Ph.D. RD Graeme completed his BSc (Hons) in Physiology before commencing a post graduate degree in Dietetics, graduating in Graeme started work at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in 2008, specialising in renal and eating disorders. His Ph. D. (national multi-centre randomised trial) investigated the physiological response to energy intake whilst re-feeding critically unwell children with anorexia nervosa. The results of this study have changed national re-feeding guidelines. Graeme is currently working with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, producing new national guidelines on the dietetic management of children/ adolescents with anorexia nervosa. He has also written a chapter on the dietetic management of anorexia nervosa in the 4 th edition manual of paediatric dietetics and MARSIPAN. Furthermore, Graeme is a board member for the specialist interest group in eating disorders for ESPEN and chairs the London eating disorders dietetic group. During Graeme s free time he s a keen kitesurfer and plays tennis. Key learning and reflection for practice enablement. 13

14 Learning Disabilities workshop session: Mental Capacity and Consent Rachel Philbert Rachel has been working as a Speech and Language Therapist with the Adults with Learning Disabilities (LD) Team for Anglian Community Enterprise (ACE), since she qualified in In 2015, she began working in an additional post, delivering training to clinicians across all adult services within ACE, in the Mental Capacity Act ( MCA ), Deprivation of Liberty safeguards (DOLs), Adult Safeguarding and PREVENT. Rachel is also a regular guest lecturer on the University Of Essex MSc Speech and Language Therapy course. Rachel has both a professional and personal interest in application of the MCA framework; firstly in her clinical role, working with adults with LD and also as a parent of a young adult with Autism and LD. Rachel can now say she has personal experience of being consulted in best interests decisions about her child parental consent is now a thing of the past! In this workshop, Rachel aims to demonstrate how process is just as important, (if not more important), than outcome, when applying the MCA. Rachel will also give practical advice on how to promote client-centred care, when applying the MCA. Key learning and reflection for practice enablement. 14

15 Mental Health workshop session: Let them eat cake or not - What are the challenges? Mary Booth Mary is an Occupational Therapist and a Fellow of the College of Occupational Therapists. She has worked in mental health and learning disability services for over 30 years, has been the Associate Director for AHPs in a large MH and LF NHS Trust. Now semiretired she works for the Care Quality Commission as a specialist advisor and has completed over 20 inspections in the last two years. Dieticians are her favourite AHPs after OTs. In this interactive workshop we will explore your challenges relating to care planning, blanket restrictions, capacity and food intake and interventions in mental health and learning disability services. CQC requirements will be discussed with brief links to guidance and legislation. Key learning and reflection for practice enablement. 15

16 Eating Disorders workshop session: The role of dietetic psycho-education in the treatment of Eating Disorders what are the essential ingredients? Marilyn Conroy. Marilyn studied for a degree in Nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College, London, graduating in 1985 followed by a Post graduate Diploma in dietetics at Kings College, London, qualifying in She has worked in a variety of posts in London and Birmingham, completing a Masters in Primary Health Care at Nottingham University in She moved to Cornwall in Marilyn initially worked as a community dietitian in Cornwall, covering out patient clinics, community hospitals and mental health. In 2002 the Eating Disorders Service was established and Marilyn joined the team in She has continued to work as an integrated member of this service since this time as the lead dietitian in the team on 1.6 dietitians. The service is a community based out patient service and in her role she works with both the childrens and adult eating disorders services. Marilyn has presented workshops at a number of conferences on Eating Disorders and is a guest lecturer at Plymouth University on their dietetic course.
