Applications to this program are solicited through a pre-proposal process for both the General Grant Program and in response to any active Request for Proposals (RFP). Grant awards in the General Grant Program for single and multi-year projects are limited to a maximum of $50,000 in direct costs over no more than three years. The NATA Foundation will continue to allow indirect costs up to 15% of the total direct costs. CHS Office of Research Pilot Project Awards 11/30/2018 The CHS Office of Research is requesting applications to support small research initiatives. Priority will be given to projects with the highest likelihood of generating preliminary data to support meritorious extramural grant applications. Funds to support projects with the potential for generating publications and other scholarly research products will also be considered. This year the funding amounts for the pilot studies will be up to $7,500 per pilot award. Grants will be funded based on merit and available budget. The program is a grant competition promoting scholarship on issues related to access, affordability and value of legal education specifically, and graduate and professional education more broadly. Preference is given to proposals that utilize regional, national, or multi-institutional datasets, although research that focuses on a single institution is acceptable. Preference is also given to proposals that specifically address legal education; however, proposals that study access, affordability and value of graduate and professional education more generally are also encouraged. Researchers may analyze pre-existing data or include the construction of a new dataset in their proposal. Membership to AccessLex Institute or AIR is not required for grant eligibility. Two levels of grants are available to support year-long research projects for recipients affiliated with a non-profit U.S. postsecondary institution or relevant higher and legal education organization. The parent project(s) should provide a cohort of well-characterized patients, infrastructure, data, and biological samples for the ancillary study. The objective of this FOA is to provide a flexible mechanism to leverage established resources and maximize the return on existing investments in parent projects. American Speech- Language-Hearing Association Lessons for Success 3-day grantwriting bootcamp 12/1 /2018 Lessons for Success (LfS) aims to provide intensive training to a promising group of early career scientists in the areas of (a) grant preparation and funding opportunities, (b) development and management of a successful program of research, and (c) advancement of professional competencies. With participants completing assignments prior to and during the conference, this grant-writing "boot camp" provides invaluable advice and guidance from senior faculty with strong histories of research funding. The trials can be any phase, must be hypothesis-driven, and related to the research mission of one of the participating ICs. 5 American Federation for Aging Research Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty 12/17/2018 The Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR provide up to $100,000 for a one- to two-year award to junior faculty (M.D.s and Ph.D.s) to conduct research that will serve as the basis for longer term research efforts on the biology of aging. These investigators study a broad range of biomedical and clinical topics related to aging. The major goal of this program is to assist in the development of the careers of junior investigators committed to pursuing careers in the field of aging research. GMRF and AFAR support research projects concerned with understanding the basic mechanisms of aging rather than disease-specific research. Projects investigating age-related diseases are supported if approached from the point of view of how basic aging processes may lead to these outcomes. Projects concerning mechanisms underlying common geriatric functional disorders are also encouraged, as long as these include connections to fundamental problems in the biology of aging. Projects that deal strictly with clinical problems such as the diagnosis and treatment of disease, health outcomes, or the social context of aging are not eligible. Rita Allen Foundation The Rita Allen Foundation and the American Pain Society's 2019 Award in Pain 12/17/2018 The RAF and APS may award two grants for $50,000 annually, for a period of up to three years to those research proposals demonstrating the greatest merit and potential for success. The entire award is to be allocated to projects specifically chosen by the recipient. Overhead is not supported. Proposed research projects should be directed towards the molecular biology of pain and/or basic science topics related to the development of new analgesics for the management of pain due to terminal illness. Eligibility Must have received committed start-up funds and independent laboratory space from their institution and this information must be clearly indicated in the Chair's letter of support for the candidate. Should be in the first three years of their appointment. 6 American Head and Neck Society Pilot Program Grants 12/17/2018 The American Head and Neck Society sponsors several research grants both as an individual society and in conjunction with the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. AHNS currently is accepting Letters of Intent for its Pilot Grants program. Through the program, AHNS awards grants of up to $10,000 in support of basic, translational, or clinical research projects in head and neck oncology. Clinical or translational research studies are strongly encouraged and should be specifically related to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, outcomes, or pathophysiology of head and neck neoplastic disease. To be eligible, applicants must reside in the United State or Canada and be a medical student, resident, PhD, or faculty member at the rank of associate professor or below. American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine AOSSM/Sanofi Osteoarthritis Grant 1 /1 /2019 AOSSM, in partnership with Sanofi, offers a research grant program to fund investigations related to early osteoarthritis (OA) and/or prevention of OA progression. This grant reflects the growing recognition of the importance of osteoarthritis within sports medicine and orthopaedics. The grant will be for $50,000 to support either a clinical research study or a lab/basic science project. Proposed studies need not relate specifically to sports injuries and should also have broad applicability to OA in the general population. Projects involving viscosupplementation will not be considered. Applications will be reviewed for their potential impact on the field, the quality of study approach, and ability of investigator and site(s) to conduct and complete the proposed research. The Principal Investigator or at least one co-investigator on all applications must be an AOSSM member who has completed his or her training. 7 American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Osteoarthritis Basic Science Research Grant 1 /1 /2019 The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine is accepting applications from investigators working on early osteoarthritis and/or the prevention of OA progression. Through the AOSSM/Sanofi Biosurgery Osteoarthritis grant program, AOSSM will award a single grant of $50,000 in support of either a clinical research study or a lab/basic science project. Priority will be given to research focused on characterizing early events in osteoarthritis and how these might be affected by joint injury; increased understanding of disease initiation and the factors that drive disease; identification of specific acute injury mechanisms that may contribute to the increased likelihood of disease progression, providing a potential interventional target; the optimization of treatment time courses to determine the validity of a mono or multi-therapeutic approach; the evaluation of epigenetics and its potential to delay degenerative disease post-injury through modulation of gene expression; and/or the evaluation of new potential chondroprotective agents, with a focus on agents/drugs that have prior FDA approval or could get fast approval. Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grant (Parent T35) PA /8 /2019 The NRSA program has been the primary means of supporting predoctoral and postdoctoral research training programs. Research training activities can be in basic biomedical or clinical sciences, in behavioral or social sciences, in health services research, or in any other discipline relevant to the NIH mission. Institutional NRSA programs allow the Training Program Director/Principal Investigator (Training PD/PI) to select the trainees and develop a program of coursework, research experiences, and technical and/or professional skills development appropriate for the selected trainees. Each program should provide high-quality research training and offer opportunities in addition to conducting mentored research. The grant offsets the cost of stipends, tuition and fees, and training related expenses, including health insurance, for the appointed trainees in accordance with the approved NIH support levels.the objective of the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Short- Term Institutional Research Training Grant (T35) program is to develop and/or enhance research training opportunities for health professional students and for graduate students in the physical or quantitative sciences interested in careers in biomedical, behavioral and clinical research that are relevant to the NIH mission. The T35 program provides short-term support for a period of at least 8, but no more than 12, weeks in a grant year for full-time training experiences under the supervision of experienced researchers. Trainees are exposed to individuals with active research careers and learn about further research training opportunities and research career options. The training program should be of sufficient depth to enable selected trainees, upon completion of the program, to have a thorough exposure to the principles underlying the conduct of biomedical research. National Institute of Nursing Research Personalized Strategies to Manage Symptoms of Chronic Illness (R21 Clinical Trial Optional) 1 /8 /2019 The purpose of this initiative is to encourage interdisciplinary research to decrease symptom burden and enhance health-related quality of life (HRQL) in persons with chronic illness through a) increasing knowledge of the biological mechanisms of symptoms and b) promoting innovative, cost-effective, targeted interventions to prevent, manage or ameliorate these symptoms. Research supported by this FOA must include rigorous validation studies to demonstrate the robustness of the target as a pain treatment target. This will lower the risk of adopting the target in translational projects to develop small molecules, biologics, natural substances, or devices that interact with this target for new pain treatments. Translational research to develop new medical devices is not the focus of this FOA. Basic science studies of pain and related systems in the body are responsive to this FOA and are encouraged in the context of novel pain therapeutic target discovery. This FOA is not specific for any one or group of pain conditions. Projects to identify novel targets for acute pain, chronic pain, migraine, other headache disorders, osteoarthritis, diabetic neuropathy, chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, sickle-cell pain, post stroke pain, orofacial pain, etc. will be considered. Resources and Services Administration Physician Assistant Training in Primary Care 1 /14/2019 Forecast of opportunity: The goal of the PCTE program is to strenghten the primary care workforce by supporting enhanced training for future and current primary care clinicians, teachers and educators and to promote primary care practice in underserved areas. The goal of this NOFO is to fund physiciant assistant programs that are prioritizing training students that are more likely to practice primary care as well as more likely to practice in medically underserved areas. American Federation for Aging Research Arthritis and Aging Research Grant 1 /18/2019 In a collaborative effort, the Arthritis National Research Foundation (ANRF) and the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR) are seeking grant applications that focus on studying the underlying mechanisms by which aging processes contribute to the development of arthritis. Studies are encouraged on the role of one or more of the hallmarks of aging that include mitochondrial dysfunction, genomic instability, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, deregulated nutrient sensing, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, telomere attrition and altered intercellular communication. Successful applications will utilize cell, tissue and animal model systems or human populations that allow for the study of the aging aspects of the condition of interest. Applicants may request up to $100,000 in direct costs only. The project period in response to this RFP is for one year. American Federation for Aging Research Glenn Foundation for Medical Research Postdoctoral Fellowships in Aging Research 1 /21/2019 This program was developed to address the current concerns about an adequate funding base for postdoctoral fellows (MD, MD/PhD and PhD) who specifically direct their research towards basic aging mechanisms and/or translational findings that have direct benefits to human aging. Postdoctoral fellows at all levels of training are eligible. Up to ten one-year fellowships of $60,000 will be awarded in The Glenn Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship program supports research projects concerned with understanding the basic mechanisms of aging as well as projects that have direct relevance to human aging if they show the potential to lead to clinically-relevant strategies that address human aging and healthspan. Projects investigating age-related diseases will be considered, if approached from the point of view of how basic aging processes may lead to these outcomes. The over-arching goal of this NIGMS R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the research training of a workforce to meet the nation s biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development, Mentoring Activities, and Outreach. PCORI Improving Methods for Conducting Patient-Centered Outcomes Research -- Cycle /31/2019 In this PCORI Funding Announcement (PFA), PCORI aims to fund studies that address high-priority methodological gaps in patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) PCOR and comparative effectiveness research (CER). PCORI Broad PCORI Funding Announcements -- Cycle (for Addressing Disparities, Assessment of Options, Communication and Dissemination Research, Improving care Systems) 1 /31/2019 The Broad PCORI Funding Announcements (PFAs) seek investigator-initiated applications for patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) projects aligned with our priority areas for research. This PFA covers the following four priority areas: Addressing Disparities; Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options; Communication and Dissemination Research, and Improving care Systems. Applications should address needs of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other healthcare stakeholders in making personalized clinical decisions across a wide range of conditions, populations, and treatments. Note: In general, PCORI will not cover costs for interventions that are being compared in the proposed study. Our National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda is a framework to guide our funding of comparative clinical effectiveness research that will give patients and those who care for them the ability to make better-informed health decisions. In keeping with the Spencer Foundation s mission, this program aims to fund academic work that will contribute to the improvement of education, broadly conceived. Teaching, Learning, and Instructional Resources: Studies in this area would be those that will lead to better understanding and improvements in the intellectual, material, and organizational resources that contribute to successful teaching and learning. They may investigate questions that are grounded directly in teaching practice, as well as research about important aspects of child and adult learning processes and contexts that hold promise for guiding informed policymaking. The focus encompasses the individual phenotype, genotype, and other omic-type assessments and the associated sensory and emotional components that underpin the individual s chronic pain experience. Research relating biology and behavior is needed to better define the individual-specific burden of chronic pain and to better understand the mechanisms underlying differences in pain experiences among individuals afflicted with the same chronic illness. 13 Applying a Biopsychosocial Perspective to Self-Management of Chronic Pain (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) 2 /5 /2019 The purpose of the Funding Opportunity announcement is to encourage grant applications from the scientific community on applying a biopsychosocial perspective to self-management of chronic pain. For the condition of chronic pain, meaning pain that persists past the expected healing time, opioid therapy is often the treatment of choice. The awareness, however, of the unintended consequences of prescription opioids, e.g., opioid use disorder and overdose, as well lack of evidence of long-term benefits of opioids, contributed to the 2016 CDC guidance that nonpharmacologic therapy and nonopioid pharmacologic therapy are preferred for chronic pain. Yet the evidence base for effective, nonpharmacologic options is inadequate, while opioid prescriptions remain high. For the 25 million Americans who suffer each day from chronic pain, such realities underscore the critical need to accelerate research that can benefit this population. As described in the literature, chronic pain is a highly personal symptom, and physical signs are not universally present. A biopsychosocial model of chronic pain is aligned with these descriptors, as it recognizes that in addition to a physiologic cause, pain perception and the biobehavioral response to pain are significant contributing factors. Reliving the burden of chronic pain in America is an urgent need that intersects with the public health crisis of opioid misuse and addiction. For the condition of chronic pain, meaning pain that persists past the expected healing time, opioid therapy is often the treatment of choice. The awareness, however, of the unintended consequences of prescription opioids, e.g., opioid use disorder and overdose, as well lack of evidence of long-term benefits of opioids, contributed to the 2016 CDC guidance that nonpharmacologic therapy and nonopioid pharmacologic therapy are preferred for chronic pain. Yet the evidence base for effective, nonpharmacologic options is inadequate, while opioid prescriptions remain high. For the 25 million Americans who suffer each day from chronic pain, such realities underscore the critical need to accelerate research that can benefit this population. The scope of this FOA includes a range of activities to encourage translation of basic research findings which will impact the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of communication disorders. Connection to the clinical condition must be clearly established and the outcomes of the grant must have practical clinical impact. The objective of this FOA is to provide support for research studies that translate basic research findings into better clinical tools for human health. The application should seek to translate basic behavioral or biological research findings, which are known to be directly connected to a human clinical condition, to a practical clinical impact. Tools or technologies advanced through this FOA must overcome existing obstacles and should provide improvements in the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of a disease process. For the purposes of this FOA, the basic science advancement must have previously demonstrated potential for clinical impact and the connection to a human clinical condition must be clearly established.
