The morning didactic lectures will cover a wide range of topics which were chosen to respond to the needs of family physicians practicing anesthesia in smaller communities. The afternoon workshops will give participants an opportunity to practice hands-on skills, including focused ultrasound, surgical airway, and awake intubation. OBJECTIVES Enhance the present knowledge of several important issues in anesthesia today and to provide support for the role of the general practitioner anesthetist in rural communities. ubccpd.ca

3 PRE-CONFERENCE COURSES PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT PROVIDER COURSE The PALS Provider Course aims to prepare health care professionals, within their scope of practice, to direct or participate in the management of the pediatric patient with respiratory compromise, shock or cardiac arrest. The purpose is to improve patient outcomes by providing the knowledge and skills required to improve the quality of care provided to the critically ill or injured child. During this course you will have the opportunity to learn, practice and demonstrate the following knowledge and skills: Basic Life Support (BLS) High quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Pediatric assessment Management of respiratory emergencies Management of cardio-circulatory emergencies, including electrical disturbances Effective resuscitation team dynamics Immediate post-cardiac arrest care Current BLS certification is a requirement for this course. If you do NOT have current BLS provider status, we will provide a pre-pals BLS certification session at 0730, just prior to the PALS Course. HOUSE PROGRAM: ULTRASOUND FOR SHOCK FRI, OCT Fairmont Hotel Vancouver Max 8 participants The Hands-On Ultrasound Education Program delivers adaptive, innovative POCUS training to meet the learning needs of rural physicians. The course day includes applications to expedite diagnosis and treatment of urgent or life-threatening conditions. The low learner to instructor ratio (2:1) allows for personalized learning and scanning on live models and ensures that each participant gains quality, hands-on practice time. This customized course for GPAs/FPAs features the Ultrasound for Shock module, including: Knobology efast Subxyphoid view Pneumothorax Lung IVC and Aorta This program is accredited for 21.0 Mainpro+ and 10.5 MOC Section 1 credits. REGIONAL ANESTHESIA DAY THU, OCT BC Children s and Women s Hospital Max 18 participants Cost: $450 + textbook Cost: $1500 The St. Paul s Hospital Regional Anesthesia Observership Day is an intensive program meant to maximize your exposure to regional nerve block techniques on patients scheduled for the operating room. St. Paul s performs a high volume of both upper and lower extremity orthopedic, plastic, and vascular surgery under regional nerve block anesthesia. Nerve block procedures will be observed in a small group format as they are performed by a Regional Anesthesiologist & Anesthesia Assistant; a Regional Anesthesia Fellow and a Senior Resident are typically performing the procedures as well. The observership is combined with discussions and didactic lectures by two regional anesthesiologists to cover topics relevant to your practice. The following is a summary of the most commonly used block techniques that will be observed or discussed during the program: Upper extremity / brachial plexus blocks commonly used include: Interscalene (single shot and continuous catheter) Supraclavicular Infraclavicular (single shot and continuous catheter) Axillary Distal selective nerve blocks (median, radial, ulnar) Lower extremity blocks commonly used include: Popliteal sciatic (single shot and continuous catheter) Saphenous (adductor canal approach and sub-sartorial approach) Distal selective nerve blocks (ankle blocks) Thoracic epidural insertion Neuraxial ultrasound Ultrasound-guided intravenous access This program is accredited for 7.5 Mainpro+ credits.
