2 Review and Approval of Previous Action Item(s) Clark Government Center, 111 NW 1 st Street, 29 th floor, Suite 29A, Miami, FL Everyone introduced themselves. The meeting minutes for January 29, 2019 were reviewed by the Committee. A motion was made to approve the minutes by Corrine Markey and seconded by Marjorie York. Safe Streets Summit 2019 was held on 2/25/19. A Safe, Connected Age- Friendly Communities Mobile Walking Tour was held earlier today from 1:00-2:00PM outside and around the SPC Government Center. Several EIC members participated including: Carmen Centeno, Cindy Brown, Isabel Rovira, Linda Schotthoefer, Mayra Garcia and Teri Arvesu. Chronic Disease Subcommittee for Dental Care for Elders forum event planned for 2019 (TBA). o Esther Felipe, Solstice Benefits, made arrangements for Jorge Vazquez, DMD, with geriatric dentistry experience, to present on recommendations for dental care of elders at EIC meeting on 6/25/2019 to be hosted at United HomeCare in Doral. o Create an educational video on the topic of dental care for elderly which can increase reach after the event; EIC members present at regular meeting agreed that this is a good idea; perhaps Consortium Executive Board and/or the Marketing & Membership Committee contacts at Univision can help with this. o Possible target audience can include hospice and nursing home care providers, actual seniors, especially those at adult day care facilities. o Many seniors are Spanish-speaking; also, some Haitian Creole. o Follow-up Subcommittee meeting to be determined after Geriatric Dental specialist presents at future Elder Issues Committee meeting. Teri Arvesu has helped organize the following community events for seniors: Action Item: Teri Arvesu to check with Miami-Dade County AV department about possibility of taping dental presentation Next Chronic Disease Subcommittee meeting (TBA) 2

3 Executive Board Update o Wynwood Job Fair at Roberto Clemente Park on Friday, April 5th, 2019 o Mayor s Initiative on Aging/Library Health Series Program Kick-Off at West Dade Regional Library on Wednesday, May 1st, 2019 (see Teri Arvesu for limited table spaces). o Older Americans Month Resource Fair at SPC Government Center in lobby on Wednesday, May 22nd, o Elder Abuse Resource Fair at SPC Government Center in lobby on Wednesday, June 12th, No updates were provided. Legislative Report Vice-Chair, C. Brown provided the following report ed by Chair, M. Pearson: The Governor has released his budget recommendations; his budget includes increase in funding for Community Care for the Elderly (CCE), Home Care for the Elderly (HCE), Alzheimer s Disease Initiative (ADI), as well as an increase for adult day care services; these are just recommendations, but still a good sign. Isabel R. reported that Florida Elder Affairs will join the Age-Friendly Initiative (AFI) network with a letter of support pending. Presentation: Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research In place of Gloria Orlandi-Kass, Program Manager, Alzheimer s Association who could not attend, Volunteer Community Educator, Marlene Simon, gave a very informative presentation about tips for healthy living for the brain and body based on the latest Alzheimer s research. Presentation highlights include: Aging well depends on the following: Genes, Environment and Lifestyle. Lifestyle choices may help keep your body and brain healthy. Alzheimer s Disease and Dementia Heart-Brain connection Some resources provided: Alzheimer s Navigator 24/7 Alzheimer s Helpline Support groups Free online education programs 3

4 Performance Measures in Need of Improvement Recognition of Improved Performance Taking care of yourself as you age in four areas: Cognitive activity, Physical health and exercise, Diet and nutrition, and Social engagement. Keeping your mind active forms new connections among brain cells and may possibly maintain or even improve cognition. Cardiovascular activity may reduce your risk of cognitive decline. Stop smoking, avoid excess alcohol, get adequate sleep, avoid head injury, manage stress, treat depression, and visit your doctor regularly. Monitor your numbers and take action (blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, and cholesterol). Nutritious food is fuel for the brain. DASH and Mediterranean diet were explained. Social engagement is associated with living longer with fewer disabilities. Remaining both socially and mentally active may support brain health and possibly delay the onset of dementia. Be cautious when you hear huge promises or reports of miracle cures; do thorough research and consult trusted, reputable professionals (your doctor, local pharmacist and the Alzheimer s Association). Attendees were provided with the workbook Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body. Vice-Chair, Cindy B. completed the review of 2019 EIC Work Plan. Members present had no new recommendations or suggested revisions. January s meeting on 1/29/2019 had a total of 52 attendees, 31 of which are registered EIC members. 4

5 Partner Updates Isabel R. announced Save the Date for AFI Summit on Thurs., May 16 th, Linda S. invited seniors to attend United Way of Miami s Older Adults Advocacy Taskforce group that meets 10AM on first Fridays of each month. Carmen C. mentioned the Miami Dade Public Library System has many free classes and/or events at their branches and encouraged EIC members to visit for additional information or to check out activities for seniors. Also, the Mayor s Initiative on Aging/MDPLS Health Series will have ongoing lectures/presentations at the Regional libraries (contact Carmen Centeno centenoc@mdpls.org if you are interested in presenting on a topic) with Kickoff/Health Fair on 5/1/19 10AM-1PM at West Dade Regional Library. Alina Becker, Alliance for Aging, announced the Alliance for Aging fundraiser event New Face of Aging-Healthcare and Senior Services Conference on 3/14/19 at Jungle Island; also, she is looking for volunteers to facilitate Chronic Disease Self-Management and Diabetes Self-Management workshops for seniors; call Alina if interested. Michelle Glen announced: Alzheimer s Community Forum at the Little Haiti Cultural Center Community Room on 2/28/19 from 6:00-7:30pm. Marjorie Y. announced: The Annual Julia Tuttle Commemorative Service on Friday, 3/1/19 at the Miami City Cemetery presented by the Women s History Coalition of Miami-Dade to kick off Women s History Month. Mayra G. announced: Chronic Disease: How to Educate Your Audience presented by Marketing & Membership Committee on 3/13/19 at Univision. Adjournment Cindy Brown adjourned the meeting at 4:00 PM.
