Agenda Item Discussion Action Individual Responsible I. Introductions Committee Member Introductions- Jennifer Richards- took a minute to celebrate and thank Nathan Read for his many contributions to TEC. Nathan Read- introduced himself to TEC as his new role of Mental Health Regional Youth Services Counselor. He expressed his gratitude to TEC members for their efforts and dedication to the Coalition. In addition, he stated that with his new role as a counselor for Shasta County Mental Health, his participation in the TEC meetings will be limited, but he will try to be at Coalition meetings whenever possible. Enforcement Updates- Steve Layton- shared with TEC members that he has conducted decoy training for five new teen volunteers. Steve Layton- announced that the Shasta County Tobacco Program conducted a Tobacco Sales to Minors Decoy Sting at twelve Redding stores. Hinkle s Market almost sold to the volunteer decoy. The rest of the stores did not. Steve Layton-announced that he followed up on tobacco smoking complaints at the Senior Citizen s Hall on Benton Drive. The complaint was made by people coming into the building about smokers who congregate in front of the Senior Citizen s Hall building. According to Steve, this building is owned by McConnell Foundation and managed by Cox and Cox Real Estate Group. After Steve s dialogue with Cox and Cox Real Estate Group, they will be putting a sign at the Senior Citizen s Hall that will state No smoking within 20 feet from the entry way. 2 Shasta County District Fair. One of the complaints was from a man who contacted Steve via cell phone to report a smoker who was smoking at the fair outside the designated smoking area. This year the California Highway Patrol was reminded smokers to go to the designated smoking area. Program Updates Heidi Brahms announced that the federal funding for schools will be funnel into one State Local Control Funding Formula- This allows school districts to have more flexibility on how the programs get categorical programs. One of the programs Fostering Youth will continue to be supported under this Categorical Formula, Heidi stated. Heidi Brahms- announced that she will be working with Burney and Fall River schools to write a grant that will be used to educate students on Smokeless Tobacco. Heidi Brahms- announced that on the week of October 7 th she will be working with 1460 AM-KCNR to host Safe School Safe Community programs. She encouraged any programs that might be interested in participating in this radio series to contact her. Heidi Brahms- shared that some districts have already conducted the Shasta County Healthy Kids Surveys, and others will do so in the fall. As soon as the data is available she will bring and share it with TEC. Anita Joseph- announced that the Community Transformation Grant staff is waiting on the response from the apartment managers and property management companies. In the meantime, staff has ordered smoke-free living signs that will be placed in the already existing smoke-free apartments as a way of promoting smoke-free places in the City of Shasta. In addition, staff will be working on a media story that will highlight these smoke-free places, along with a photograph of the signs. Steve Layton- shared that he and Manuel Meza attended a meeting at Anderson Seasons Senior Housing Apartments. 3 smoking will not be tolerated. Steve had the opportunity to explain the local tobacco ordinances and inform them about our existing tobacco cessation resources. Aleta Carpenter- announced that she attended the PHAB award luncheon along with TEC nominees representing Bella Vista School and the City of Redding. Kim Niemer accepted an award on behalf of the City of Redding for its work on smoke-free parks. She will formally present award to the City Council members at its next City of Redding Council meeting, and planned to invite TEC to attend. In addition, the students from Bella Vista who participated in the June 6 smoke-free project will each receive an individual PHAB certificate. Rick Crowley- asked TEC members for assistance to bringing more clients into the current cessation classes. Manuel Meza- announced that he has been promoting the Shasta Community Health Center s cessation projects at the Shasta County Homeless Connect and the Shasta Community Health HOPE Van. Rick Crowley- announced that in July he will start another Project EX Teen Cessation class. He also stated that he continues to conduct Second Wind Cessation classes at the Redding Rancheria. As an alternative, cessation classes will be offered during lunch for Redding Rancheria staff who smoke, Rick said. II. Presentation None III. Action Items Approval of I & E Days follow-up letter to State Legislature representatives- Jennifer Richards- asked TEC members for approval of the letters drafted to thank the State Legislators and to invite members of their District Office staff to attend a TEC meeting. Beth Thompson -made the motion that the letters be approved and be sent out after any necessary revisions are made. 4 agreed that Aleta Carpenter will finalize and prepare the letters to the legislators. Letter will be sent to legislators Aleta Carpenter IV. Continuing Business Retail Environment Campaign recruitment- Beth Thompson- announced that the Retail Environment Campaign recruitment is going very well. A volunteer training is scheduled July 15 at the Shasta County Library. Volunteers will learn how to administer the isurvey on the ipods, about the different tobacco products, and about tobacco placement. Volunteers will receive a stipend of $25 for the training and another $25 for conducting the actual surveys. These isurveys will be conducted at 206 Shasta County stores, Beth said. Anita Joseph- asked the TEC members to promote the Retail Environment Campaign Training at any of the upcoming meetings they will be attending. Report from attendees of Peer-2- Peer Training- Rick Crowley- reported that he attended the Peer-2-Peer training and stated that he has been using some of the materials from this training. Rick Crowley- shared that these tools offered at the training are OK, but they are not good for everyone because they involve lots of writing. He believes that the classes he conducts that encourage participant talking and sharing, rather than writing, are more effective at engaging the participants. Rick Crowley- reported that the Peer-2-Peer training works better with woman than with men, but he will find seek more detail as he continues to test the curriculum. Priority Project: Volonte Park- Beth Thompson- gave a recap of the discussion during the last Volonte Park meeting. During the meeting, it was agreed to have the Monster Camp project offered at the Anderson Teen Center. According to Beth, 20 kids attending Monster Camp one hour a day, 3 times a week. Kids attending the camp are doing crossfit physical fitness, working on personal relationships and working on core values. New Business Request: Smoke-free Mobile Home Park Toolkit reviewers- Beth Thompson- announced that Josette Shipley, who is working with the Smoke-Free Mobile Home Park Toolkit program, is asking TEC members to assist with reviewing this tool kit. When completed, this document will be distributed to other counties that work with Mobile Home Parks. Review the Smoke-free Mobile Home Park Toolkit Rick Crowley, Aleta Carpenter and Brooke Biechman TEC Accomplishments FY Beth Thompson- announced that in the interest of time she asked TEC members to read the summary of the TEC Activities and Accomplishments for July on their own. Recruitment of New TEC members- Stacy Watson- introduced a new recruit member, Susan Young. Manuel Meza announced that Margaret Crandell will be joining TEC starting next month. VI. Upcoming Events & Announcements Cessation Referral Training- June Jennifer Richards -announced that trainings are going on now and encouraged TEC members to attend. Club Health Booth June 25- Manuel Meza- announced that Club Health will be at Simpson University on July 25 and asked for TEC volunteers. Retail Campaign Data Collection Training- July 15 th Great American Smokeout Planning-September- Jennifer Richards- announced that planning for the event will start in September.
