Abstract Water is significant component to human body. Our body is composed of about 60-70%. Drinking enough water each day can flush toxins from our body, maintain health and reduce incidence of disease. Instead, if we don t drink water, it will bring about a lot of diseases, such as diabetes or related disease and so on. Learning the importance of water to human body, we want to realize teenagers attitude toward drinking water. Hence, we distributed questionnaires to investigate teenagers opinions toward drinking water. Based on the results of questionnaires, we found that nearly 60% of teenagers don t know how much water people need to intake for a day. Furthermore, we also found that teenagers know drinking water is vital, but they don t like drinking water instead of replacing water with beverage. Also, the frequency of drinking beverage is high and up to three to four days in a week. In addition, we conducted an experiment that only drinking water and not drinking beverage for a month as well. Through the experiment, we realized that intaking adequate water and not drinking any other beverages can make weight lose and reduce speckles of skin. 1
I. Introduction I.1. Background Water is an important component of human body. Ours blood, lymph and body secretions are all related to water. Water accounts for about 60-70% of our body. Therefore, it is commonly recommended to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. (Kris Gunnars, BSc, 2016) It is true that drinking enough water helps our body stay hydrated and maintain healthy. Water or, to be specific, plain water is a no-calorie alternative to sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) such as soda and sports drinks. Drinking plain water instead of SSBs may help prevent obesity and many other illnesses among children and adolescents. Although plain water is a readily accessible and low-cost beverage with health benefits, approximately one in six U.S. children and adolescents do not drink plain water (NCBI, 2013). The likelihood of children developing these health problems rises with an increase in the amount of added sugars consumed. Overweight children who continue to take in more added sugars are more likely to be insulin resistant, a precursor to type 2 diabetes, according to the statement (American Heart Association,2016). People who drink too less or not enough water become ill and feel tired easily. In addition, they but also more easily thinking chaos, and not easy to rule out the body's metabolic toxins. Office workers who sit in the air-conditioned room all day, more likely to have dry skin, easy to small fine lines of distress, for older people, children or athletes, if they stay in the sun for a long time, it may be possible dizzy, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, pale, blood pressure and other dehydration symptoms. Therefore, do not easily neglect the importance of drinking water! Remember to add the necessary water for your own body any time. I.2. Motivation & Purpose As beverages increase day by day, we walk a few steps and see a beverage store. The kinds of beverages also increase with each passing day. Everyone almost hold not water but drink on the street. Even if they are thirsty, they choose drink. Drinking beverage seems to be a habit. Even if they go out and take the water bottle, they still want to buy beverage. As a result, we feel like to realize why teenagers take an interest in not water but drink. Asking teenagers to drink a bottle of beverage a day may be possible, but to drink a bottle of water may not be necessary. Teenagers don t drink water because a variety of reasons lead to the habit that teenagers don t drink water. Nevertheless, we want to understand what reasons bring about the question. Our research questions are proposed as follows: 1. What is the importance of drinking water to our health? 2
2. What are teenagers attitudes toward drinking water? 3. What the changes will be if we don t drink beverage for 1 month? II. Methods To conduct the research, the researchers surfed the Internet and discussed with their teachers. After the discussion, they used two instruments in the study -- a questionnaire and the Internet. Finally, the researchers analyzed the data collection and information and made the finding and discussion of this study. II.1. Participants There were 142 senior high school students participating in the questionnaire survey; 100% of the data was considered valid. The participants were selected from National Miaoli Senior Commercial Vocational School by random sampling. Also, the participants age ranges were from 16 to 18. High school students are chosen as our target due to the fact that a variety of teenagers like drinking beverages more than drinking water. Therefore, high school students were selected as our participants. II.2. Instruments Our project aimed at realizing the habit of drinking water and beverages. For these purposes, the researchers designed a questionnaire on teenagers attitude toward drinking water, administering to teenagers. There are seven items in the questionnaire divided into two major parts. First, the researchers would like to know how many times teenagers drink beverages in a week and how much water teenagers drink every day. Also, the researchers explore into the preferences and motivation for participants to drinking water and beverages. According to the outcome of the questionnaire, the researchers are able to find out their opinions on drinking water and beverages. The researchers conduct the whole process with caution to make sure that each participant understands the questionnaire clearly, making all the delivered questionnaire valid. III. Findings and Discussion III.1. The Importance of Drinking Water to Our Health 3
The purpose of the study is to know the influences that drinking water to human body, so we used the internet to search the relative literature review and arranged the table as below. Table 1. The Importance of Drinking Water to Our Health Benefits Control Calories: Choosing water rather than a caloric drink, you will become healthier and are easy to be full, which helps you trim calories intake. Energize Muscles: Cells that don't maintain their balance of fluids and electrolytes shrivel, which can result in muscle fatigue. Keep Skin Looking Good: Once you are adequately hydrated, the kidneys take over and excrete excess fluids. Helps Your Kidneys: Your kidneys do an amazing job of cleansing and ridding your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids is adequate. Maintain Normal Bowel Function: Adequate hydration keeps things flowing along your gastrointestinal tract and prevents constipation. Health Risks Heart Disease and Stroke: Water is essential to help prevent clogging of arteries in the heart and brain. Depression: Water helps the body naturally replenish its supply of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Sleep Disorders: Water is needed for the production of nature s sleep regulator, melatonin. Lack of Energy: Water generates electrical and magnetic energy in every body cell, providing a natural power boost. Attention Deficit: A well-hydrated brain is continually energized to imprint new information in its memory banks. (Source from Zalman, 2008; Batmanghelidj, 2003) III.2. Teenagers Attitude toward Drinking Water We want to deeply study teenagers attitude toward drinking water, their preference degree to drinking water, their cognition to the importance of drinking water, their frequency of drinking water, everyday water intake, and so on through questionnaire survey. Through 142 questionnaires including 34.5% of male and 65.5% of female, we analyzed the seven charts. Below are the result explanations about each chart. 4
Figure1. People s Attitude toward the Amount of Daily Water Intake. Figure2. The Frequency of drinking beverage in a week. According to Figure 1, we realize that 61% participants don t know people should drink at least 2000~2500 c.c water each day. In Figure 2, it indicates that more than half participants drink beverages for more three times every week. It causes teenagers are more possible to have diabetes or other diseases. Figure3. The Participants Concept of how much water they should drink every day. Figure4. The Participants Concept of the Importance of Water As shown in figure3, that about half teenagers only drink 500~1000 c.c water. So we learn that teenagers don t like to drink water, and only 7 % participants drink quantity that human body needs. Based on figure4, the reason probably that more than half people know drinking water is important. 5
Figure 5. People think drinking water is important to body. Figure 6. People usually replace water with beverage. Based on figure 5, we learn that mostly half people (43.6%) usually replace water with beverages, so we learn teenagers drink beverage as water and depend on beverage deeply. From figure 6, shows we realize that more than 50% of teenagers drink beverage more often than drink water. As a result, we realize teenagers depend on not water but beverage more. Figure 7.We learn that about 52.1% teenagers like to drink water, so we realize teenagers usually drink water, but they still like drinking water more than drinking beverages. About 51% of teenagers don t like to drink water, so we realize despite drinking water is important to teenagers, they still don t have the habit of drinking water. 6
III.3. The Experiment of Quitting Drinking Beverage for One Month In order to realize the influence of not drinking beverage but only drinking water to human body, we did an experiment. The object of study is a seventeen-year-old senior high school girl student, who lives in Miaoli. Our controlling factors are drinking 2000c.c water every single day and not drinking beverage in a month. By doing this experiment, we realize the improvement in the body during the time. Table 2. Differences between before and after Doing the Experiment. Subject:One of the Researchers Period:One Month Weight Variation:1 Kilogram Controlling Factors: Drinking 2000 c.c. Water and Not Drinking Beverage Week Outer Change Inner Change 1st Week 2nd Week 3rd Week 4th Week In first week, the weight had distinct variation. It reduced 0.6 kilograms. In second week, the weight reduced 0.3 kilograms. I still could see a little variation. In third week, the weight only reduced 0.1 kilogram. Although we couldn t see distinct variation, the specks weakened gradually. In fourth week, the weight reduced 0.2 kilograms. The skin condition became a little better. I felt painful and unhappy because of not drinking beverage. Although I still had desire to drink beverage, I didn t feel painful like I did in first week. I started adopting not to drink water. I didn t want to drink beverage because I drank water all the time. I felt well and healthy in body and mind. IV. Conclusion According to this study, we found that teenagers know water is important to human body, but it seems that many teenagers don t have enough knowledge of water consumption. For example, the result shows that most of the teenagers still don t know how much water human body needs in their 7
daily life. Besides, the result indicates that the majority of the teenagers doesn t get good habit of drinking water. When they feel thirsty, they prefer to choose beverage rather tank plain water. It may cause teenagers to run into the risks of diabetes, heart disease, and many other illnesses. Therefore, the importance of drinking water has to be advocated to make more and more people realize the influence of drinking water to our human body. In addition, we should carry out actively to keep our body healthy. IV. References American Heart Association(2016). Children Should Eat Less Than 25 Grams of Added Sugars Daily.
