As you review the List of Needs, which 2 or 3 do you feel you are most able to fill? Why?

2 While I served as division director I was assigned to the NSP Governance Committee for the past 31/2 years. This service period was during some challenging times for the NSP. This committee moved the organization through very important changes. We worked to get the NSP on track for the next surge in NSP growth and increase our respectability in the Outdoor Recreation Industry. We worked through an important Bylaws re-write, a Policies & Procedures Manual revision and multiple governance issues. I have been a leader during most of my business life as the owner and CEO of several successful corporations. I am familiar with and use daily financial, simulation modeling, write and analyze spreadsheets and other computer technologies to predict the outcomes of changes in business growth and development. Using strategic planning for my corporations has given me the ability to use this same skill for the NSP. 2. Describe your NSP Background: The leadership positions you have held in your Patrol, Section, Region, Division and National. Junior Ski Patrol Lassen Volcanic National Park, California Became a Patroller, Ski Scaly Mountain, North Carolina 1987 Patrol Representative, Scaly Mountain, North Carolina Section Chief, Deep South Section, Dixie Region, Southern Div., NSP Earned Senior Patroller qualification 2002 Region Director, Dixie Region (fka Smoky Mtn Region), Southern Div., NSP Assistant Division Director, Southern Div., NSP st Assistant Division Director, Southern Div., NSP National Appointment # in 2008 Division Director, Southern Div., NSP While division director, served as a member of the NSP Board s Governance and Finance Committees 3. List NSP Educational program participation/certification (OEC, MTR, AVA, etc). I am a Senior Patroller, an OEC instructor, a Toboggan Instructor and have taken Mountain Travel and Rescue I. I ve also taken the first Avalanche level course and hope to advance my Avalanche credentials by taking courses outside my Southern Division. 4. How many years have you served as a board member in any organization? I have served on boards of directors regularly since the age of 24 when I was appointed to serve as the youngest member of Days Inns of America. Without listing them due to space concern I have served on at least 10 boards of directors over a period of 40 years. For 2 years I served as President and board member of a non-profit Foundation, which is funding and rebuilding the Acworth, GA train depot. I also currently serve on the Board of Directors of the Southern Division as Past Division Director. 5. After your review of the Standing Committee information in the P&P, please tell us what competencies you would bring to each committee. I am most interested in the Finance Committee because of my corporate business experience. I find it rewarding to deal with establishing and enforcing budgets. Being a past member of the NSP Governance Committee I am familiar with the work of that committee and would have a good knowledge base to serve on that committee again. Wherever I can be of some help with my business experience, I am ready to serve. I have a vision of where I believe our NSP System can go and achieve my goals within a budget structure for the benefit of all of the members of the NSP so the Planning Committee would also be a possibility for me.

3 6. Fund raising is critical to the sustainability of any non-profit, including the NSP. What expertise would you bring to the Board with regard to improving our non-dues revenue? Finding ways to raise funds is almost limitless, but at the same time can be very difficult to seize on the best course and build sufficient momentum to be successful. Continuing with our current efforts to find charitable donors, grants from various organizations and possible government sources is critically important. I have been in the business of funding most of my life, particularly in the development of real estate. It involves building relationships on a long term basis and minimizing embarrassing mistakes. Having done this successfully for my corporations, I am willing and think I can apply my skills to assist the NSP to enhance fundraising. 7. The NSP faces many challenges. What do you see as the major challenge(s) facing the organization, and what strategic ideas and solutions would you offer? A. Proving to the other Stakeholders of our Outdoor Recreation Industry that we are forward thinking, worthy, well organized and progressively operated to accomplish our missions. Solution: Curtail infighting and bickering and show we can work together, run the NSP efficiently and adapt to changes in our world. My central goal is to keep our NSP Board of Directors focused on strategic thinking and well planned activities. B. Become a recognized National Asset for helping those in crisis or in need, throughout the US no matter where and without the boundaries by which we are now constrained. Solution: Continue our efforts to engage the US Congress and appropriate federal agencies to broaden the mission of the NSP, yet stay true to our history and traditions. C. Planned, positive growth and adaptation to change. Solution: Carefully make available our organization and products, to markets which need them in order to do their jobs better, and be willing to adapt our organization to strategic changes. 8. Summarize why you would be the best candidate for membership on the NSP BOD. Since I do not know the other candidates for a realistic comparison, my honest answer is, I hope my skills and past NSP work make me the best candidate. Others may be extremely talented but my business experience, my service as division director, my service on the NSP Governance Committee for 3 ½ years gives me a distinct advantage at this time in our history. I have a thorough knowledge of the governance documents of the NSP and have experienced how the NSP Board of Directors works in conjunction with the division directors, program officers and the office staff. It is my belief we are making the NSP better and through the efforts of future good Board Members, the NSP will be a great organization for its members. I dedicate my best to serve the NSP and I love the National Ski Patrol. That is why both my wife, Joan and I are Lifetime Members. By submission of this application and questionnaire, I verify that the enclosed is true and correct. I am committed to fulfilling the responsibilities of a member of the NSP BOD as outlined in this Call for Candidates. I understand and will meet the financial, time, and participation expectations that are required for the position. I understand that the contents of this application may be disclosed to others and that other individuals may be contacted regarding this application, and I agree with that potential action. If I am selected as a candidate for election, I understand that this application will be posted on the NSP website for the consideration of the membership.

ATTACHMENTS: Resume - Richard Boyer Born while my family was living in Sequoia National Park, California, the son of a National Park Ranger. In the 3 rd grade we moved to Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado where I learned to ski. My dad was transferred to Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California when I was in the 8 th grade. This is where I first became involved with the National Ski Patrol as a junior patrol member. In 10 th grade we were transferred to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Marietta, GA. At the end of my high school tenure a track scholarship (among other factors) induced me to go to Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. While at GA Tech I was hired as a special assistant to Cecil B. Day, President of Day Realty Associates, Inc., working in property management and construction (1967) Upon graduation from college was promoted to Vice President, Day Realty Associates, Inc., property management of office, retail and apartment projects Executive VP Construction Development, Days Inns of America, Inc., Member of the Board of Directors Executive VP, managing partner, Day Realty of Charlotte, Inc., which developed its own Days Inns motels and restaurants as well as multi-family projects in North Carolina President, principal broker, and managing partner of Day Realty of Atlanta, Inc., property management and real estate brokerage, investments and sales President of Boyer Group, Inc., property management, commercial real estate brokerage, construction, development, and investments Risk Management Associates, Operation of multiple Captive Insurance Companies including Reliance General & Maritime Atlantic Re Insurance Companies Teton Management Company, currently owner and Chief Executive Officer of a third party administrator which has had developmental and operational responsibility for over 50 insurance companies Currently serve on the Board and as President of Save the Acworth, GA Depot Foundation a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to bringing the train depot back to its original location.
