11 RESEARCH SCHOOL BASED SURVEY OF 1 ST TO 4 TH FORMS 20% USE TOBACCO, 17% SMOKE CIGARETTES, 12% OTHER TOBACCO PRODUCTS. 3 IN 10 STUDENTS LIVE IN HOMES WHERE OTHERS SMOKE. 7 IN 10 THINK SHS IS HARMFUL TO THEM AND THINK SMOKING SHOULD BE BANNED IN PUBLIC PLACES. OVER 60% OF SMOKER WANT TO STOP.

15 SUMMARY OF ACHIEVMENTS to Agency established as the national expert on Drug Abuse Prevention and is a regional reference for programme standards, research and evaluation of DAP initiatives. Pioneered IDER 2009 First country selected to conduct Global Health Professional School Survey 2008 First country to establish DIN in the Americas

16 Summary Achievements Expanding our information centre which is the only specialized library for Drug abuse information and research in the region. (NEXUS) at Visit NCDA library search online.

17 SUMMARY ACHIEVMENTS to 2009 Providing updated information and data on the current drug use situation ( NSS & GYTS) Initiation of Anti Tobacco Petition Marketing Practices Survey Upgrading of staff in substance abuse specialization for delivery of primary treatment. Delivery of Substance Abuse Treatment in targeted communities and in Health Centers in collaboration with the Mental Health Network

18 SUMMARY ACHIEMENTS to 2009 Infusion of substance abuse into the curriculum of tertiary level institutions UTECH ( Pharmacy Degree Programme) UWI DEC ( Regional Online Certificate Programme in Substance Abuse Prevention & Treatment ) Development of effective indigenous prevention models e.g.. Squeaky Model, IDER 3 Establishment of a network of Substance Abuse Counselling Centers (2007 NHF Project) Collaboration with MOE to review the infusion of Scope & Sequence Curriculum for ages 3-14 Provision of internships for UTech and UWI Technical Support for Drug Courts in Kingston & Montego Bay Expansion of anti-drug messages through media-reality PSAs Funding agencies-grade A
