Older teens (15+) can use the fitness facility. Power House Activity Part 1: Group Check-in 5 minutes Participants will use the ball toss activity to check-in about their week. Participants will set goal(s) for next week. 1. Toss the ball to each other. 2. Participant will catch the ball and share one thing about the last week. 3. Participants will turn in tracking sheets and receive a new tracking sheet. 4. Ask group to set a physical activity goal and write it on tracking sheet. Participants have the option of setting additional personal goals. 5. Draw one tracking sheet for a prize. 6. Encourage continued food and activity tracking. Part 2: Deconstructed soda 10 minutes Participants will use ingredients listed on labels on to make a sugary drink. Write positive feedback on tracking sheets and return to participants during shared meal or the following week. 1. Divide participants into groups of 3-4 people. 2. Each group will receive an ingredient list from pop and warning list for homemade soda recipes. 3. Groups will combine the ingredients (with exception of rust cleaner). 4. Facilitate discussion about the homemade pop.

2 Power House: Youth Experience Session 11 Facilitator s Reference: Ingredient List Carbonated water Caramel color High fructose corn syrup (Caro corn syrup: 2tbsp=10gm sugar) o Need 8 tbs to equal one can of coke Phosphoric acid (use a rust cleaner: DO NOT ACTUALLY HAVE TEENS HANDLE THIS) Warning list Caffeine can be toxic in high doses. Be careful not to add too much to your mixture. To be safe, keep the concentration below 100mg or cup. Gum arabic is available in two forms: art grade and food grade. Be sure to get food grade Gum arabic, or you could have a very unpleasant toxic reaction. Phosphoric acid will burn if it touches you. If you do get acid on you, flush the affected area with water for at least 15 minutes and get medical attention. Many of the oils needed for flavoring can irritate skin. Use caution when preparing. They can also dissolve the plastic lining of a refrigerator. Store them in a glass container. Lavender oil can cause many dangerous side effects, so you may want to leave this out. Discussion Questions 1. What did you think of the pop that you made? 2. Did anything in the ingredient list stand out to you? Warnings? 3. Why do you think companies are able to sell a product like this? Part 3: Honest Ads 20 minutes Participants will create an honest ad for sugary drinks. 1. Groups will take 30 seconds to write down as many words or phrases that they feel honestly describe the sugary drinks they made. 2. Participants will then combine ideas to create an honest sugary drink advertisement. 3. Participants will share honest ad with the larger group. Sugary drinks are the leading single source of empty calories in young people s diets and directly contribute to diet related diseases. In 2014, beverage companies spent $866 million to market sugary drinks to youth. Kids receive marketing messages for sugary drinks almost everywhere they spend their time including TV, internet, social media, etc.

3 Power House: Youth Experience Session 11 Facilitator s Reference: Honest Ad The ad can be sample billboard, PSA poster, TV commercial, an Instagram post, a series of tweets, etc. They can also use the materials from the first activity for their commercial. 5 Power House: Parent Experience Session 11 Participants will use the Nutrition Facts label to determine the amount of sugar in a variety of products. They will measure the amount of sugar in each drink and compare it to the daily recommended limit for added sugar. 1. Divide participants into groups of 3-4 people. 2. Give each group 1-2 sugary drinks to analyze. 3. Provide each group with a daily recommended limit of added sugar handout. 4. Participants will read labels to determine the amount of calories and sugar in different drinks. a. Step 1: Identify the serving size and/or number of servings per container. i. Some drinks may have more than one serving per container. b. Step 2: Look for calorie and sugar content i. A calorie-free drink is defined as 5 calories or less per serving. ii. Drinks that contain sugar will have it listed on the label. Drinks that do not contain sugar may or may not have the grams of sugar listed. 5. Participants will fill small, clear cups with sugar to show the amount of sugar in each drink. (1 tsp = 4 g sugar) 6. Participants will measure out the daily recommended limits for added sugar and compare it to the amount of sugar in the beverages. 7. Each group present their findings to the larger group. Facilitator Reference: Table 1: Sugar and Calorie Content of Selected Drinks Sugary drinks are the leading single source of empty calories in young people s diets. If someone added one 20oz bottle of regular pop per day it would add up to a 25 pound weight gain in one year. Beverage (serving size) Sugar (g) Teaspoons (#) Calories per serving (kcal) Rockstar Energy Drink (8oz) Vitamin Water B-relaxed Kool-aid (16oz) Orange juice (16oz) Gatorade (1 bottle, 32oz) McDonald s sweet tea (large, oz) Starbucks, Frappuccino (grande, 16oz) Coke (20 oz) Lemonade (20oz) Mountain Dew (20oz) Jamba Juice all fruit smoothie (original, 22 oz) Coke Big Gulp (32oz)

6 Power House: Parent Experience Session 11 Part 3: Honest Ads 20 minutes Participants will create an honest ad for sugary drinks. 1. Divide participants into groups of 3-4 people. 2. Groups will take 30 seconds to write down as many words or phrases that they feel honestly describe sugary drinks. 3. Participants will then combine ideas to create a poster of an honest sugary drink advertisement. 4. Participants will share honest ad with the larger group. In 2014, beverage companies spent $866 million to market sugary drinks to youth. Kids receive marketing messages for sugary drinks almost everywhere they spend their time including TV, internet, social media, etc. Facilitator s Reference: Honest Ad Considerations 1. Have participants consider what messages they would want their kids to receive about sugary drinks. 2. Encourage participants to think about the ingredient lists on their sugary drink examples. 3. Consider less obvious reasons (i.e. sugary drinks replacing milk/bone health, higher dentist bills/tooth decay, preference for sugar, cost of SSB vs water) Part 4: Fruit infused water during mealtime Participants will make flavored water using a variety of fruits and herbs. 1. Participants will wash hands before preparing fruit infused water. 2. Thoroughly wash ingredients. Slice fruit if necessary. 3. Display a variety of fruits and herbs. 4. Participants will choose ingredients to make a fruit infused water. a. Fill jar with selected ingredients. b. Use wooden spoon to press ingredients to release some of the juice. c.
