Family Fun Day 2014 On Saturday, June 7th FRS hosted its 4th Annual Family Fun Day. The families enjoyed interacting with each other and participating in the exciting activities and games. The day consisted of wonderful activities, great prizes, and lots of smiles and laughter. We take pride in giving back to the community and FRS would like to thank all FRS staff and families who attended the FRS Annual Family Fun Day. We appreciate your support. Growing, Growing, Growing! Now Just a month ago FRS kicked off their community garden, located on La Salle Avenue, behind the department of Social Services. Since then the garden has flourished tremendously and harvested various vegetables and herbs. The community garden can be accessed Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thank you to all FRS consultants and youth who have contributed to the community garden! 2 Rooting for the Raiders On Saturday, June 24th FRS youth attended the Richmond Raiders football game. The children had the wonderful opportunity of meeting some of the players and officials. The intense game urged the crowd to roar with support. The game showed that collective teamwork and great effort can result in victory. The children enjoyed the thrilling atmosphere and inspiring players. Thank you Richmond Raiders for providing such an amazing opportunity and taking time out to interact with the youth. Blue Bird Gap Farm Treveon Allen Stills participated in a hayride at Blue Bird Gap Farm, where he was able to interact with the animals. He was able to watch the animals in their natural habit as he was educated on each creature s origin. Treveon enjoyed being in nature and learning about animals with his peers. Thank you Blue Bird Gap Farm for provide such an educational opportunity. Cheers for CheerTyme! The CheerTyme Awards Ceremony was conducted on Sunday, May 18th. It was a celebration and recognition of the numerous achievements accomplished by the young ladies. It is proven that hard work and dedication does payoff. Congratulations to the CheerTyme ladies for your many accomplishments continue to excel to greater heights!

3 Star Athlete CONGRATULATIONS to Aysa Miesel for making the EXCEL team at Gymnastics Inc. Congratulations to the 2014 Graduates!! FRS would like to congratulate Quinn Hopkins, Briana McGinnis, and James Vinston for graduating from high school this month. Quinn Hopkins graduated with highest honors from Denbigh High School with a 3.5 GPA. Quinn plans to attend Norfolk State University in the fall. James Vinston graduated with honors from Menchville High School. Brianna McGinnis graduated from Tabb High School. We are proud of you and your accomplishments. We wish you many blessings in your future endeavors. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. -Nelson Mandela. She is a dedicated worker who works diligently with the youth to help them achieve their goals. She uses her enthusiasm and determined spirit to encourage the youth to excel in all aspects of their lives. Jasmine is a consistent hard worker who does not mind stepping in when needed. She is an admirable asset to FRS. Please join FRS in congratulating Jasmine Sargent for being selected June s Consultant of the Month. FRS would like to thank you for your hard work and devotion.

4 June HEALTH TIPS With all the summertime activities kids will be thirsty. That means they will need more water. The American Association of Pediatrics has recommended that children and teens drink water for hydration. They have also recommended staying away from drinks that have sugar and/or caffeine like energy drinks, sports drinks and sodas. A lot of children will think they are hungry but all they really need to do is drink some water. Water has zero calories and is the perfect drink to keep your child hydrated during the hot summer months. 1) Drinking Water Keeps You Young Drinking plenty of water is great for your skin. If you don't drink enough water, you'll suffer from dry skin, and you'll be likely to use more creams and lotions to moisturize. However, creams and lotions don't strike at the root of the problem. Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin moisturized and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you don't drink enough water, your body will try to retain it in order to conserve resources. This retention makes your skin puffy and can even lead to bloating. 2) Drinking Water Helps You Lose Weight There's a reason why most diets and fitness programs ask you to drink a lot of water. One of the benefits of drinking water is that it helps you lose weight. Water suppresses your appetite, so you don't eat as much. Drinking plenty of water also prevents fluid retention, because your body won't try to retain water if it's getting enough. Drinking water also helps your body burn stored fat. If you're not drinking enough water, your liver will be forced to help your kidneys detoxify your body. When you drink plenty of water, your kidneys don't need any extra help, so your liver will be able to metabolize stored fat more efficiently. Drinking water flushes toxins from your body and prevents constipation. 3) Drinking Water Helps You Build Muscle Another benefit of drinking water is that it makes your muscles stronger. That's because water carries oxygen to the cells of your body, including those of your muscles. Drinking plenty of water enables your muscles to work harder and longer before they feel tired, and this can help you build muscle. 4) Drinking Water Makes You Smarter Drinking water can increase your cognitive function. Your brain needs a lot of oxygen in order to function at optimum levels. Drinking plenty of water ensures that your brain gets all the oxygen it needs. Drinking eight to ten cups of water per day can improve your levels of cognitive performance by as much as 30%! Drinking plenty of water also supports nerve function. It ensures that your body's electrolyte levels remain high enough to allow your nerves to relay messages to and from the brain in the way they were meant to. 5) Drinking Water Is Good for Your Joints One of the lesser known benefits of drinking water is that it helps keep your joints strong, healthy and lubricated. Your joints need moisture in order to remain strong and flexible, so that your movements are smooth and pain free.
