Hey everyone, Dr Axe here. Welcome to Healing Leaky Gut and our specific training on Overcoming Adrenal Fatigue. This might surprise some people, but leaky gut and adrenal fatigue are oftentimes very closely related, and some of the chief causes of adrenal fatigue are related to leaky gut. So in this webinar, I m really going to teach you and go through, What is adrenal fatigue? What are the causes of adrenal fatigue? What are the symptoms that you have it, and then the exact steps you need to follow including diet, supplementation and lifestyle to overcome adrenal fatigue fast. I know that again, adrenal fatigue is something that affects a large amount of people, and a lot of times it can also be part of a side effect of leaky gut. This is if you have a stressed gut or you know that you fit in that category, then you typically also have adrenal fatigue. So any adrenal related issue, often thyroid related issues. Anything where you re exhausted and tired all the time is definitely related to adrenal fatigue. So, if that might be you, or any of those sound like you, any sort of hormonal issues whatsoever, fatigue, thyroid issues, slow metabolism those are all warning signs that you have adrenal fatigue. So, adrenal fatigue is estimated to affect around 80% of people in the world. Think about that, 80%. According to James Wilson he s the author of Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome he says chronic stress and lifestyle affects the body s ability to basically recuperate, heal and recover from both physical, mental, chemical and emotional traumas. Whether for a short time... because what can happen is you can have adrenal fatigue for just a short period of time. But for many people, because of emotional stress and diet, it turns into this chronic health issue. If you have any one of these symptoms, these are warning signs that you have adrenal fatigue. Anything body aches, trouble concentrating, racing thoughts or brain fog, moodiness and irritability, just being tired, feeling overwhelmed, hormone imbalance of any type and cravings for sweets and salty foods. Those are some of the baseline symptoms and there are more beyond that that I ll talk about in just a minute. But, basically these symptoms can indicate that you do have adrenal fatigue, or also what s known as adrenal insufficiency. It can also be a major factor in what s causing 1

you to have excess body fat storage, and low energy levels. So, another thing if you ve ever said to yourself, I think I have a sluggish thyroid, or you work out a lot and you re still not losing the weight, or you sleep enough at night and you still don t feel like your energy is where it should be those are all signs that you do have adrenal fatigue. Let me tell you a little about your adrenal glands. I want to get more into the causes and symptoms, and then steps to heal. But, your adrenal glands are essentially the size of your thumb. So, that s about how big they are and they sit on top of your kidneys. They re part of your endocrine system. Also known as your suprarenal glands, they are involved in producing over 50 hormones that drive almost every bodily function, many of which are essential to life. So think about this your adrenal glands coupled with your suprarenal glands they are key in balancing hormones for your entire body as we ve talked about. Hormones, as I said, they affect certain things directly and indirectly, such as hormones like ghrelin and leptin, which are important for weight loss and other hormone precursors. Just a few of the hormones they affect: One are glucocorticoids, which control blood sugar. They re also important for what are called mineral glucocorticoids, which help balance blood pressure and hydration in your body. They re also related to sex hormones. So, if you have excess estrogen in your body, or if you re a male that has low testosterone or even struggle with baldness or growing hair where you shouldn t grow it, that s related to a hormone called DHT. So, your adrenal glands are partly in control of those things, and also they re partly control of adrenaline and hormones that affect your heart health and overall energy. So you can see that your adrenal glands control a lot of different functions in your body. So, let s talk about what causes adrenal fatigue. Basically, adrenal fatigue is a condition where your body and your adrenal glands can t keep up with the amount of tremendous stress you re exposed to on a regular basis. That can be different types of stress. It can be an emotional, stressful period, it can be food or toxin stress on your body. Also I want to mention this: sometimes adrenal fatigue is misunderstood as an autoimmune disorder, and adrenal fatigue can mimic some of the precursors of autoimmune illness. Many wellness doctors and holistic practitioners believe that an 2

episode of acute stress or prolonged stress can cause adrenal fatigue and your body to become overloaded. So, some of the biggest causes straight-up of adrenal fatigue: Number one is a stressful experience, like the death of a loved one, a divorce or even a surgery. Now, the first two are more emotional, but surgeries can be both emotional and also physical, those can cause adrenal fatigue. Exposure to environmental toxins or pollutants. Number three, prolonged stress due to financial hardship, bad relationships, hardworking environment, and other conditions that can leave you feeling helpless and overwhelmed. Negative thinking, if you re continually... if you have negative thoughts and emotional trauma. I would say specifically, any type of abuse, emotional trauma, and even emotional abuse in words are big causes of adrenal fatigue. The next one here is lack of sleep. I want to pinpoint this one because if you re getting less than eight hours of sleep a night, that will put you into having adrenal fatigue. I used to have people call my radio show years ago and they would say, Dr Axe, I don t know why I just don t have energy. So I would say, what are you eating? I m eating this. Okay, let s do this. Are you exercising and then I finally say, Well, let me ask you something, are you sleeping well? Oh yeah. How many hours a night? Five and a half. Well, listen, I don t care how well you eat and what else you do. You re going to be tired and you re going to have adrenal fatigue if you re sleeping five hours a night. So, that s an important thing to recognize: you ve got to get quality sleep. The last thing here, poor diet and along with poor exercise. Poor diet eating foods that exhaust your adrenal glands we ll talk about in just a little bit, especially sugar. Then, lack of exercise. We re created to move, that s partly a stress reliever. It helps rejuvenate your adrenal glands, if it s the right type of exercise. So, let s talk about the biggest symptoms, again, of adrenal fatigue. Here s what happens in adrenal fatigue. Your adrenals stop producing hormones efficiently, and every bodily function is affected, especially, again, different hormones, estrogen and progesterone. Emotional stress can keep a woman from getting pregnant, it can 3

cause infertility. It can cause depression, it can cause men to have low libido, poor muscular gains and low testosterone, all of those issues. So, here are some of the biggest warning signs again, that you have adrenal fatigue, or the biggest signs and symptoms: morning fatigue or trouble waking up decreased libido depression muscle weakness poor focus bone loss inflammation If you have inflammation, muscle pain, increased allergies, difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep, irritability, fatigue, cravings for sugar and sweets and bread, hair loss or hair thinning, weight gain, slow metabolism, muscle tension, inability to tolerate high carbohydrates. Thyroid conditions like hypothyroidism and Hashimoto s all those are warning signs that you also have adrenal fatigue. So, what I want to do now is jump into the top steps that you can follow in healing adrenal fatigue. Number one starts with diet. In every case of adrenal recovery, diet plays a huge, huge factor. So, there are certain foods you need to stay away from and certain ones you need to include. Number one, the foods you need to stay away from, number one is caffeine, excess caffeine. If you are a coffee drinker or you drink large amounts of, let s say, even black tea a day or energy drinks, those will absolutely cause adrenal fatigue. You cannot rely on caffeine. And, listen, I don t care if it s healthy organic coffee, and you put butter in it I don t know how that even makes it healthier, but I guess some people think it does. But, caffeine will wear out your adrenal glands. You re relying on a stimulant, and that s an absolute no with adrenal fatigue. So, get rid of coffee completely. If you want to do an herbal tea, I would definitely recommend something like a chamomile tea, or ideally, an adaptogen tea like a tulsi or holy basil tea. So, tulsi and holy basil are by far the best overall for adrenal fatigue. I would do tulsi tea during 4

the day and I would do chamomile tea at night before bed. Do that with a little bit of stevia and it s an ideal drink for those with adrenal fatigue, and it can take the place of caffeine. The next big no food if you have adrenal fatigue is sugar and sweeteners. So, sugar and sweeteners. This includes obviously high fructose corn syrup, even artificial sweeteners, sugary foods, desserts, cereals, candies and sweets. Be aware that sugar is an additive in breads, condiments, salad dressings and regular dressings for food. You just want to try to avoid as much extra sugar as possible. If you are going to use a real form of sugar, raw honey is the best, in moderation. Never use more than a tablespoon at a time. Stevia is the ideal sweetener if you have adrenal fatigue. So, again sweeteners and sugars definitely something you do need to be conscious of when you have adrenal fatigue. So, something there to think about with that. The other thing, I would say, would be alcohol. Alcohol can provoke anxiety, and is not positive to managing stress. Now listen, a glass of red wine, a single glass once a week, twice a week, you re going to get by with that. But, I would say, I would try and keep your alcohol at first as you re trying to heal at zero and then just one night a week, one glass of something, like a red wine here and there is fine. But again, you ve got to be careful, excess alcohol intake will definitely make adrenal fatigue worse. The other will be processed and refined flours. So, I mentioned sugar earlier, but this includes breads, it includes flours, it includes cakes and muffins and cupcakes and pie. Any of that refined flour products, or just flour in general, is something you want to stay away from. If you re going to use flour, coconut flour, almond flour are good replacements that are lower in carbohydrates. Grain products and gluten. Grains can quickly turn into sugar, and gluten especially will target the adrenal glands and also affect the thyroid. We know your adrenals and your thyroid are both so important for hormone balance in your body. If you are consuming gluten, it can cause leaky gut, which in turn can cause all of these issues we re talking about. So again, grains are a big no-no with leaky gut or at least excess grains. 5

Now doing some gluten-free grains in moderation, such as a little bit of quinoa or something like that, or sweet potatoes, are fine in moderation. But, really your diet should be loaded with vegetables, beans on occasion healthy fats, high quality protein. But really, protein and vegetables need to be the core of an adrenal diet, of healing your adrenal glands and of a stressed gut. Then, cold foods ice water is terrible for those with adrenal fatigue. It s terrible for those with issues of the spleen, as well like stomach, or like leaky gut or digestive issues. But cold foods ice water, eating cold salads all the time, ice cream, cold smoothies, and milkshakes the worst thing, ice cream, is probably the worst thing you could possibly ever eat, or like an ice tea with caffeine and sugar. Those are the worst things you can consume with adrenal fatigue because cold food, your body has to spend so much energy, warming it up and then again all of those nutrients in there. All of the things like caffeine and it [cold foods] causes lack of absorption of nutrients. So, for those reasons, staying away from cold foods if you have adrenal fatigue is also highly, highly recommended. So those are the big foods you really want to stay away from if you have adrenal fatigue. Now, let s start talking about therapeutic food some of the best superfoods to overcome adrenal fatigue. These are foods, if you look at Chinese medicine, these are also foods that nourish the kidneys. As I mentioned, the adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and they work together. So, in Chinese medicine a person with these issues would be called the water element. It s called the water element, that typically means that you really need a lot of vitamins, minerals as well as enzymes to heal your body. So, a lot of vitamins and minerals, a lot of micronutrients, are crucial in overcoming adrenal fatigue. Those include salty foods or foods that are high in things like sodium, potassium and electrolytes. So, here are some of the best: Number one thing that people should do with adrenal fatigue or salty foods like wild caught fish, grass-fed beef and bison, free range chicken, organic turkey, organic liver from beef and chicken. So listen, liver meat is great for those with adrenal fatigue because it is very high in Vitamin B12, and Vitamin B12 is known as the energy vitamin. It s one of the vitamins that when somebody has leaky gut, there s typically malabsorption of vitamin B12, and then adrenal fatigue, there s typically a deficiency 6

as well. So, again vitamin B12 and, by far, the food that s highest in B12 is going to be organic chicken and beef liver. Basically, you can take chicken liver and put it in a Crockpot with other chicken, and you really won t even taste that it s in there. If you do, it s just a little bit. It adds a little bit of bitterness there, but it s actually very good. I ve had chicken liver paté plenty of times at restaurants and you wouldn t even know you re having it. Now beef liver doesn t taste as good to some people. But chicken liver in a Crockpot with other chicken, let s say as part of a chicken soup, is fantastic and you probably wouldn t even notice it s in there. The other thing would be, eggs are good, beans, seaweed and sea vegetables. Now, seaweeds are also very, very high in micronutrients, B vitamins as we ve talked about. They re very in high vitamin A. So, they re good. They also tend to have a lot of electrolytes like sodium and potassium. Certain fruits are very, very good figs, blueberries and blackberries. Think very dark colors when you re trying to nourish your adrenal glands and your kidneys. So, again figs, that dark bluish blackish color, blueberries, blackberries. Those are the best three fruits for healing your adrenal glands. You don t want to go overboard with those, but that s why if you have a stressed gut or adrenal fatigue, you don t want to do, like, a fig parfait or a fig pudding. If you are going to do something like that a blueberry smoothie, a blackberry smoothie or snacking on those during the day are definitely the best fruits for adrenal fatigue. Other foods, eggplant, dark green leafy vegetables, especially kale and chard. If you re going to do a grain, wild rice is typically the best for adrenal fatigue. Then walnuts and black sesame seeds. If you would actually step back and look at this diet, when we re talking about things like wild rice, sea vegetables, miso soup, wild caught fish, it s a very similar diet to an Okinawa diet, or what those people consume who live in Japan. So, if somebody said Hey, what s the ideal diet for adrenal fatigue? Look no further than Okinawa, Japan. It s the diet that they consume. It s very nourishing to the kidneys, very nourishing to the adrenal glands. They have very long lifespans, a lot of peace in their life. You notice they re also in the area of Asia. They really focus on 7

meditation and the importance of allowing the body to relax. So again, think about what they would eat on a daily basis and that s how you need to eat. Other nutrients that are crucial in healing your adrenal glands are foods filled with probiotics and enzymes. Things like kefir and yogurt. Now, you actually don t want to overdo dairy with adrenal fatigue. But, let s say a four ounce, or a small serving, as part of a smoothie or something like that would be fine. But, it should be goat s milk. So goat s milk yogurt, goat s milk kefir in small amounts on occasion, fermented vegetables like sauerkraut, sprouted foods, so it increases the enzymes. So I don t recommend if you have adrenal fatigue consuming a lot of nuts and seeds, unless they ve been soaked and sprouted, ideally. So something like a sprouted flax and chia, that s ideal. Foods high in B vitamins are crucial to nourishing your adrenal glands. Grass-fed beef, chicken and beef liver, poultry, green super-food powders with spirulina, green leafy vegetables like kale and chard and spinach. These all help nourish the adrenal glands, especially grass fed beef and liver. We know beef and liver are both very high in B12. Sea salt, surprisingly used instead of iodine. But sprinkling sea salt on your food is fantastic for your adrenal glands. I want to mention, I mentioned those three fruits, I mentioned blackberries and blueberries and figs. I would throw in, probably, strawberry, berries in general, pomegranates. Those are all good as well. Again, using sea salt don t skip on the salt definitely using sea salt liberally on your food is actually good for adrenal fatigue. I would recommend Himalayan salt, number one, and the second best would be Celtic salt. Foods high in magnesium are also good and nourish the adrenal glands, such as sprouted seeds like a sprouted pumpkin, flax or chia seed, also avocados, spinach, chard, figs and sea vegetables. You ll see there s a lot of overlap here because the same foods are high in those electrolytes and minerals. In Chinese medicine, the kidneys are the same they are high in these same nutrients. Foods high in omega 3 fatty acids. Cold water fish, wild salmon, grass-fed meats. Again, going into these omega 3 fats, sprouted seeds, like sprouted chi and flax. Then foods high in amino acids of course bone broth, beef and chicken liver. 8

I know it felt like I just basically replayed the same foods over and over again. But, again, I wanted to hit on the specific nutrients, and as I went through those it was a lot of the same foods overlapping there. By the way, if you want to see this list extensively, go to the Stressed Gut Plan, and you will find the top foods listed there, as well as in the Stressed Gut Meal Plan, you re going to find many of these foods there as well. So, let s talk about the best supplements for treating and overcoming adrenal fatigue. Number one is going to be adaptogenic herbs, specifically ashwaganda is one of the best we know for the thyroid. But, again adaptogen herbs across the board, and these adaptogen herbs help the body adapt to fight stress better and improve what are called DHA levels in the body, which is so important for anti-aging. I talked about this earlier. Why do the Japanese and people in Okinawa live so long? They keep these hormones balanced with DHA, but adaptogen herbs help, and one of those adaptogen herbs that they consume in Asia today is known as tulsi tea, or holy basil tea. But besides tulsi and holy basil, the other tea that you want to consume is licorice root. But, licorice root tea, holy basil tea and also ginseng, rhodiola, and ashwaganda are great. One other category of adaptogens that may surprise some of you are certain types of mushrooms, which are again, also very popular in Asia. Like reishi, maitake, and cordyceps. So, reishi, maitake, and cordycep mushrooms are some of the best and they actually also help your body reduce stress levels. So, adding some of those mushrooms to a mushroom soup, or adding it to a stir fry, consuming those good types of mushrooms on a regular basis that you can typically find in a health food store, are fantastic. Of course, you can order those online. Just look up reishi, maitake, or cordycep mushrooms and you ll find those online. The other thing here would be a vitamin B12 support. It supports cellular energy, improves thyroid and adrenal function. If you have leaky gut, which most everyone here listening has, that will cause B12 absorption. So leaky gut is what s causing your adrenal fatigue and it isn t pretty much every case, but that s another big warning sign. Selenium is another crucial nutrient that can help in supporting your adrenals and thyroid. So, selenium is a key nutrient. It s important for something in your body called methylation, which is essentially cellular energy production. So, consume 9

more selenium rich foods, Brazil nuts, seaweed, strawberries, meat products, sprouted nuts and seeds, like chia, flax, and pumpkin. The other one is L. glutamine. We know L. glutamine is an amino acid that reduces stress on the gut, helps heal the gut lining and then probiotics. Probiotics are essential for healing leaky gut, for increasing the microbes in your system, that will also help you in overcoming adrenal fatigue. So again, very, very crucial that you re getting plenty of probiotic rich foods as well as probiotic rich supplements in your diet. I d recommend two caps twice a day, typically, for those with adrenal fatigue. Now, let s talk about stress reduction. Of all the things I talked about, this is at the top. It s one of the most important things you can do in overcoming adrenal fatigue. I want to go through a top ten things you may consider doing, and then go through something a little bit more in depth. But, if you do have adrenal fatigue, you really have to reduce stress. So, number one thing you can start to do is rest when you feel tired as much as possible. If you re feeling tired and run down, take a nap. You may say to yourself, I ve got kids, I ve got work, well obviously you can t do it in the middle of work, but then on the weekend, I mean, try and start getting some rest. Number two, sleep eight to ten hours a night. Getting sleep, and restful sleep, is so important. Number three, avoid staying up late and stay on a regular sleep cycle. Ideally you d go to bed at 10 and you d wake up when you wake up. Maybe that s 7:00, maybe it s 8. But again, ideally you d go to bed around 10, by far the latest at 11. But, ideally, try and get to bed around 10. Number four, laugh and do something fun every single day. So many of us are work, work, work, work, work. Not enough play and that will exhaust your adrenal glands. Number five, minimize work and related stresses. So, again, if you re working 60 hours a week, it s too much. For some people 40 is too much and you may say I ve got to provide for my family. Well, in that case, you do your best, but try not to overdo it. And it s work smarter not harder, the best you can. Number six, eat on a regular food cycle and reduce sugar and caffeine. Lay out your 10

meals specifically, don t overeat, don t under eat either, just lay it out. You want to reduce sugar, add in more healthy fat and fiber in your diet is crucial. Number seven, exercise. Typically, for those with adrenal fatigue, you may not want to start out doing intense exercise. In fact, you may want to start off doing something like a barre class, yoga or Pilates, or just doing some light weight training with some jogging, or just even moderate exercise like walking. Walking is fantastic for those with adrenal fatigue, especially walking outdoors in the sun. Getting around nature, letting your mind clear great for adrenal fatigue. Number eight, avoid negative people and negative self talk. I challenge you, write down those five people that stress you out, that suck the life out of you. Get them out of your life and write down the five people that are positive that you need to get around. Number nine, take time for yourself. Do something relaxing, read your favorite novel, go to the mall and walk around, or a movie, or walk a trail. But don t just say you re going to do it. Put it in your schedule like you schedule going to work or schedule anything else. Schedule that. Number ten, seek counsel or support for any traumatic experiences in your life. You ve got to heal your spirit and your mind, as well, if you re going to overcome adrenal fatigue. I want to talk about this a little bit more. The personality type, by the way, that tends to have adrenal fatigue? According to Chinese medicine, those who experience stressed gut are typically labeled as being having strong wills. Uncompromising determination. Let me ask, do any of these describe you? People that have a stressed gut also tend to value family, friends, or remain in contact with people. They also, though, tend to take too much on at one time. So, if you are one of those people, you say, hey, I ll do that you ll say yes to everything. You re like Oh, I can do that. They take on too much. If that s you, that s a warning sign. Here s what happens when somebody has a stressed gut or adrenal fatigue, what they tend to do then is they oftentimes become overwhelmed and then they become hermit-like and turn into work-a-holics. If you re a person that s labeled as a workaholic, or you take on more than you should, that s a big characteristic that you are going to get adrenal 11

fatigue, or already have it. So, a few other things you can do to overcome that. Number one here, find and have available three go-to stress relievers that work for you. These could be taking a few deep breaths, stepping outside for five minutes and going on just a really short five minute walk, reminding yourself just to let it go. Perking up your posture and carrying yourself confidently. Typically people that are stressed tend to hunch over. Or planning something you look forward to at the end of your day, even if it s just a short, you get to read 30 minutes or you get to watch your favorite show. But schedule in those three go-to stress relievers. Number two, be sure to carve out time to socialize and take a break from work because people with adrenal fatigue tend to take on a lot of challenges work-wise and retreat to get it done. It s important to schedule and engage in social time and remove yourself from the isolated work vortex. Just like you have a work schedule, you need and must schedule in fun relaxation time. Fridays, you get done with work, a one hour schedule, maybe it s on a weekend. The biggest people who I see this with are young moms, the biggest people I see with adrenal fatigue. They ve taken on so much. Maybe you re in your mid 30s and you ve got three young kids and you don t get any alone time. I know everybody does have financial restrictions, but getting a babysitter for a couple hours a week or having your husband take over, getting some you time one time a week, can be absolutely crucial in overcoming adrenal fatigue. You ve got to carve it out. I know a husband and wife, they would do that for each other. They d say, Honey, you get three hours on Fridays, I m going to get three hours on Saturday mornings and watch the kids. They did that and they couldn t do it every weekend. But there are a few times a year they could, but most of the time it was scheduled and it transformed the relationship. I mean just that three hours, it had a big impact. Number three. Exercise for at least 30 minutes every other day doing Pilates, yoga, barre, weight training. Maybe some burst training or swimming or a spin class. But doing some form of an exercise is a great stress buster. Join a family member. In fact, group exercise is the best for people with adrenal fatigue. It takes your mind off stress, you re having fun with friends ideal thing for adrenal fatigue is exercising 12

with a group. Number four, meditate and try guided imagery, or listen to mellow music for at least 10 minutes a day. Now, meditation can mean many things, but typically you want to meditate on something positive, something uplifting or visualization and let your mind destress. Typically, what I ll do is I ll read, maybe a Bible verse or a scripture or a personal growth book. Then after reading that, Scripture and it might just be one sentence or one verse out of the Bible, but then I ll just let my mind relax and just pray and maybe think on that and that s just it. I ll just kind of meditate on that, let my mind clear aside from that and that s really it. Another thing I ll do is visualize what I want in the future. I ll pray and say God, I really would love to work with you in helping more people get healthy, or I would love to have a beach house one day. I mean these are things...they re okay to ask for and dream about. So again, I would take time and dream and visualize yourself at the beach and your spouse. Having a great time together. Your kids growing up and being successful, and you achieve something you ve wanted to achieve. But take some time, destress and meditate 10 minutes a day. It doesn t have to be all day. Listen, if you can t meditate or are not good at it, then listen to a piece of music that you find inspirational. Not something like hard rock music or something that s really overwhelming. Something that s soothing, uplifting and happy. Listen to music. Then, last, but not least, taking a detox bath. This is one of the best ways to relieve stress. In the evening after dinner, take a hot bath. Add in one cup of Epsom salts and about 20 drops of an essential oil. Either lavender oil, chamomile oil or a vetiver oil. What I do is actually do some of all three. But 20 drops total with a cup of Epsom salt. The Epsom salts are loaded with magnesium. Those essential oils help relax the body, and then drink a warm glass of chamomile tea while in the tub. So again, taking a detox bath can be tremendous at helping you overcome adrenal fatigue. Listen, if you really want to take the steps to overcome adrenal fatigue, I recommend go check out the Stressed Gut Plan. You re going to find more tips on there and a lot of what I went over, the best things to do. Start following that diet, and listen, don t skip any of those steps. You need to get enough sleep, you need to look at the specific diet, you need to take the supplements, and you need to 13

especially follow that adrenal fatigue lifestyle. If you do that, you re well on your way to overcoming leaky gut and adrenal fatigue. Hey guys, this has been Dr. Axe. I hope you ve enjoyed this training on how to overcome adrenal fatigue. 14
