4 By: Kezia Shamil How it started In 2003, the idea behind a charity event that would combine with the battle against cancer was born in an Australian restaurant one afternoon. Adam Garone, the co-founder of Movember, began his global movement on the basis of two factors: the importance and fashion of facial hair amongst the male population and the lack of attention or support that was provided to men suffering from prostate cancer However, Movember does not solely help individuals facing prostate cancer. Shops and hotels, such as Fairmont The Palm in Dubai, reward free shaves, massages and meals for participating in the month, despite the general itchiness it may include. For teenagers or students participating that are less likely to win these awards due to age and time constraints, there is always the added advantage of looking just a little older. The concept; that has quickly caught on in more than 21 countries, is to dedicate 30 days to grow the best (or worst) mustaches and donate towards the cause at the end of the month. Proceeds collected fund research on testicular cancer while the resulting awareness encourages men to discuss their health openly and seek treatment as well as support. By adding a fun twist to a serious and critical issue, the Movember Foundation hopes to afford men renewed confidence, the opportunity to both come to terms with their condition, as well as, seek the needed treatment and commence on the journey towards a healthy life. 13 Why Go Veg? As stated by Vegetarian Times, enjoying a meat free and plant based diet is a simple way to increase your life expectancy, as well as lower the risk of heart disease, strokes, diabetes, obesity and certain cancers. It is a common misconception that vegetarians are weak and lack necessary nutrients. Vegetarians can however gain all required nutrients as well as have accessto a wide variety of foods. Animal life on a modern day factory farm is definitely inhuman. Farm animals raised for meat, such as cows, pigs, sheep and chickens are denied the same protection of animal cruelty laws that protect our pet cats and dogs. This is despite the fact that they have the same ability to suffer and feel pain. Experts say that pigs have a greater intelligence than dogs and three year old children The meat consumption per capita is 73.8kg in the UAE. Moreover, the average meat eater is said to consume an average of 100 animals a year. Proteins can be found in vegetarian sources including: whole grains, lentils, nuts, seeds, tofu, beans and peas. In fact, recent reports by American Cancer Society indicate that eating a diet high in protein from animal sources, especially red meat, may make you four times more likely to die of cancer or diabetes. Calcium can be obtained by dairy products such as milk, cheese, yogurt or spinach, broccoli, kale, beans, sunflower seeds, dried figs, mustard and turnip greens. You can also get your daily iron intake from dark green vegetables (spinach, broccoli, etc.), sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, soybean nuts, dry fruits and prune juice. Eating foods high in vitamin C will help the body absorb iron from these plant sources.

14 Do it for your Planet One of the simplest, yet most effective ways to combat our environmental problems is switching to a vegetarian diet. PETA as well as other research has proven that livestock production require more water, land, fossil fuels and various resources other than edible crops. The United Nations has identified the livestock industry as one of the most significant contributors to today s most serious environmental problems. This includes global warming, loss of fresh water, loss of habitat land destruction and pollution to name a few. It also causes excessive amounts of waste, dead zones in oceans, emptying of oceans and world hunger. In developing countries, the land that could be used for production of crops to feed the hungry are instead being used to produce and export crops to feed farm animals. Start today The production of livestock for human consumption has a very large influence on our planet and its people. Not only will switching to a vegetarian diet save the lives of numerous animals but might just save our planet. So the real question isn t why go veg, but why haven t you already? You can make a big difference just by supporting Meatless Mondays in our school cafeteria today! 2
