3 The Health On the Net Created in 1996, HON is a not-for profit foundation Mission: HON guides Internet users by highlighting reliable, comprehensible, relevant and trustworthy sources of online health and medical information, tackling the major obstacle of Web: the overwhelming quantity of information the uneven quality of health information available online Since 2002, HON Foundation is continuously recognized as a nongovernmental organization and granted Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council In France, HON is the official certifying organization for French health websites (since 2007) Funded by the Geneva state, European Commission, and the French National Health Authority 2010 HON 3

5 The Context The number of Internet users continues to increase: 1/3 of the worldwide population is connected [1] 75% of the Swiss population is online. An increase of 170% in ten years [1] The possibilities offered by information and the Internet are changing the behavior of e-patients and their relationship with their doctors. Internet is the second source of health information after the physicians [2] In USA, the proportion of those who are online and look for health information has increased to 88% this year [3]. 6 The Context Cyberchondria (increased anxiety after consulting the Internet for health information) highlights the potential impact of Internet on e- patient [1]. The health information found online affects epatients health decision [2]. 7 Our motivation Our investigation in 2008 amongst the doctors in Geneva for their habits and needs shows that: 88% of the 267 respondents have Internet access in their practice 46% of the respondents recommend websites to their patients sites of specialized medical information (59%) sites of general medical information (50%) sites of associations of patients (50%) sites providing advice for everyday life (46%) 62% would use already printed "cards" containing the addresses of sites specific to certain diseases 78% would you use an Internet tool that allows them to select sites for quality and trust classified by subjects to give/send to their patients Survey conducted in collaboration with the Association des Médecins de Genève (AMG)
