1 Welcome to the August edition of our monthly Newsletter This Newsletter contains information about Jersey Alzheimer s Association s services and activities in support of people affected by dementia. JAA Services Where does your money go? The current running costs of the charity are 250,000 per annum. We are very grateful to members of the public and the business community in Jersey who enable us to provide the range of services we do. In order to ensure that our services are sustainable, we aim to develop links with organisations which offer financial support for a number of years, as well as support for one year. We are now actively seeking support from companies during 2018, with an article appearing shortly in Connect Magazine. Support for Carers Friendship Group: August Meeting At the meeting of Friendship Group on Saturday 12 August we met at Sandybrook Day Centre to talk about issues of common concern, and reviewed recent events, not least the Battle of Flowers Parades at which JAA was the chosen charity. It was good to welcome a number of new members. Next Meeting The next meeting of Friendship Group will be on Saturday 9 September when there will be lunch out from 1pm to 3pm at Rocco s Bar and Restaurant, Les Mielles Golf and Country Club, La Route de la Marette, St Ouen s Bay, St Peter JE3 7FQ. We have booked 24 places. For 10 you can get a popular main course plus a glass of wine, draft beer/cider or soft drink. Further details are available in the Drop-in/Office. 2 Future Meetings Dates of future Saturday Friendship Group Meetings are as follows: 14 October: cancelled due to the Recharger Day for Carers on 21 October see details below 11 November: based at Sandybrook, details to follow; 9 December: details to follow of lunch out. Friendship Group meetings will either be held at Sandybrook Day Centre (generally with speakers) from 10am to 12noon or meals out/trips to different venues. We welcome ideas for future speakers and venues for meals. Volunteer News Welcome to Jackie Gordon who has started to work as a Volunteer Fundraising Administrator for JAA. Jackie is helping to plan future events and respond to enquiries about fundraising. Events Recent JAA events St Ouen s Manor Fete took place on Saturday 29 July. Many thanks to the kind 2018 Trek volunteers who ran the JAA stall and gave the new JAA-branded Marquee its first outing! JAA was chosen along with the Teenage Cancer Trust Jersey Appeal to benefit from this popular family event. A public presentation of the amount raised for the two charities is to be made on 19 October. The biggest fundraising event so far involving our charity happened at the two Battle of Flowers Parades on 10 and 11 August. Our thanks to the many, many volunteers who helped to sell programmes and collect donations over the Battle days. Special thanks are due to Paul and Gill Bell who very kindly ran Le Petit Train in the Thursday Parade and to the many passengers on board the Train, comprising people living with dementia and carers. A small team of dedicated JAA volunteers decorated the Train for the Parade thank you all! There is a further Battle of Flowers event on 10 December.

3 Eleven brave fundraisers for JAA successfully completed abseils down Mont Orgueil Castle on Sunday 6 August in association with John Fox of Jersey Adventures. More Daredevils for Dementia are taking to the skies by doing tandem skydives thanks to Skydive Jersey on dates this month and in early September. We are planning 2018 abseil and skydive dates. Future JAA events In September we will be marking World Alzheimer s Day (which falls on 21 September) with over a week of awareness raising and fundraising events, as follows:- Saturday 16 September: Information & Fundraising Stall outside M&S in King Street from 10am to 3pm Tuesday 19 September: Information & Fundraising Stall at the Co-op in St Peter s from 10am to 3pm Thursday 21 September: HSSD-run Dementia Conference in the General Hospital Education Centre, at which Sian Wareing-Jones will be one of the invited speakers Friday 22 September: Dress Down Fundraising Day to wear Purple Monday 25 & Tuesday 26 September: Street Collection in St Helier The next dementia friendly community day will be on Monday 16 October when we will be holding a musical event at St Clement s Parish Hall from 11am to 2.30pm. Live music will be provided by local band Foolish Things. We held a very successful Valentine s Day Tea Dance in February at the same venue. This time we are suggesting that everyone brings a packed lunch so that people can stay for as long as possible. We will be serving teas and coffees.

4 JAA has partnered with Le Masurier to host the inaugural RECHARGER Day on Saturday 21 October, based at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel. It will be a relaxing and fun day for Carers of people with dementia in Jersey. Please see the enclosed/separate brochure for full details of the free activities and meals on offer. Numbers are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Online JAA Calendar There will soon be a new online Calendar on the JAA website: which we hope will be a useful additional way for the charity to promote events and to recruit the support that we need from volunteers in order to run awareness and fundraising stalls throughout the year and to provide our range of services. Fundraising The Halkett Hoedown is a Community Street Party which aims to raise thousands of pounds for local charities. It will take place in St Helier on Saturday 27 August. JAA has been chosen as one of the charities to benefit from the event. Food & Film Night in aid of JAA on Friday 8 September at 6.30pm. Join us in watching the Film Iris and support Trek Burma 2018 fundraising for Jersey Alzheimer s Association; all proceeds on the night go directly to the Charity. Cost: 10 ( 5 Senior Citizens/Students). Food: A Meal For Memories will be served at 7pm; the Film will be shown at 8pm Venue: Elim Rock Community Centre, Gordon Le Breton Close, St Clement Please Phone Noella on / to confirm attendance. Stamps and Coins If you have any used stamps or foreign coins and don t know what to do with them please consider giving them to JAA. We are able to convert both used stamps and foreign coins into funds. Raffle Prizes If you have any items that would be suitable for Raffle Prizes please kindly bring them to our Drop-in/Office as every year there are events at which Raffles are held in aid of our charity. Many thanks. Co-op Share Number All Channel Islands Co-operative members can donate their dividend in-store. Jersey Alzheimer's Association's share number is 421. Trustees News The Trustees have agreed to appoint a person with a diagnosis of dementia as a new Trustee. Mark and Sian are working on this important initiative, in conjunction with Alzheimer Europe and the Scottish Alzheimer Society. Alzheimer Europe In October this year s Alzheimer Europe Conference is being held in Berlin. JAA will, as always, be represented as the charity is a full member organisation. More news to follow!
