Why do I have to do DDR? DDR is a mandatory part of the Young Marines We are an answer to a problem that is the scourge of our youth and adults in every community in our nation. Strengthening the lives of America s Youth is about more than pushups and drill. We are the only Youth Organization in America that produces our own Drug Demand Reduction Education material. Our investment in DDR is what sets us apart from other entities asking for money. DDR is why Congress gives us the money that we use for all of your Young Marines to go to leadership schools, SPACES, and other activities.

DDR Training Three (3) hours per quarter Make or break SPACES participation Required for all leadership schools Community Outreach Anti-drug events in schools, church groups, youth groups D.A.R.E support Local Law Enforcement events National Recognition Enrique Kiki Camarena Award Fulcrum Shield Award

They started with one of the Gateway Drugs. Most law enforcement officers will tell you that they never arrested anyone for cocaine, methamphetamine, or heroin that didn t start with one of the Gateway drugs. As a youth organization, if we can stop our youth from abusing the Gateway Drugs, it stands to reason that they will not make the leap to others.

ALERT Stands for. Adolescent Learning Experiences Resistance Training

Leadership component that allows for older Young Marines to teach younger Young Marines. Reaches several different learning modalities. Lesson plans, resource materials, and updated statistics available online. Is statistically proven to have positive results. IT S FREE. Satisfies the 3 hours per quarter of required DDR training. Candidates for YMOY, UOY, and VOY must be from units who teach PA. YMOY s must be ProjectAlert certified and teaching classes.

Participating in Red Ribbon Week Why do we push to participate in Red Ribbon Week? It began in tribute to Marine and DEA Special Agent, Enrique Kiki Camarena. Agent Camarena was on assignment in Mexico investigating the trafficking of cocaine and marijuana into our country. He was kidnapped, tortured and murdered. His body was found on March 5, 1985.

Supporters Respond Shortly after his death, Camarena Clubs sprung up in his hometown of Calexico, California. Members started wearing red ribbons and pledged to lead drug-free lives in honor of Kiki. Later that year, the movement to wear red ribbons spread across California and then beyond.

Going National Campaign went national in 1988, with President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan serving as honorary chairmen. Now, in the last week of October every year, millions of youth and adults wear red ribbons and pledge to be drug-free in honor of Kiki Camarena, DEA agents and others across the nation trying to keep drugs off our streets and out of our children s hands. Young Marines are leading the way.

How do we do it? Have your Young Marines wear red ribbons, sign the contract to remain drug free encourage their parents to as well. Schedule opportunities for your Young Marines to present drug free classes in schools, to other youth groups, to community groups, to church groups, etc. Participate in the DDR Dash 5k Don t wait until RRW to plan. Plan Now!!!!

DDR Dash 5k (Running drugs out of town) The Drug Demand Reduction Dash is run the last Saturday of Red Ribbon Week (Oct. 27, 2018) The Dash begins at 0800 in the Eastern time zone with sequential starts following in each time zone across the country Each unit sets their own Dash location and recruits runner/walkers Online registration is available

Leading the way All units are expected to participate in Red Ribbon Week. Download the DDR lesson plan outline from our website. It s in the library. Work with your kids to create lesson plans that are AGE and CONTENT APPROPRIATE! Age related vocabulary. Let your Young Marines do the presentations. Practice so they aren t reading presentation. Order RRW materials when HQYM makes them available. Find a location to hold the DDR Dash & notify the media AAR s MUST be turned in to DDR@youngmarines.com by November 30 th. AAR forms are in library in DDR folder.

DEA Device Four classroom type presentations of at least 20 minutes in length to a non-young Marines audience. No tag-teams, no booths, no fairs, no skits, etc. All four presentations must be on same submission and done within a year. Verifiers should not be staff. Provide legible address. Forms are in library. Send them to DDR@youngmarines.com Submission for each Young Marine should be sent separately. Allow at least a month process time.
