This bellringer is intended t be a cllabrative effrt between students where they will be encuraged t reflect n their ntes t make a histrical inference fr the day s lessn. It is a way t get students thinking abut cause and effect and cntinuity and change frm the frmer lessn t the current lessn. Students shuld be taking ntes which will help prvide cntext fr the upcming class activity (which will in itself help students gain a better understanding f Prtugal s mtives fr explring Africa and the Indian Ocean) The fllwing activity will be Age f Explratin: Prtugal s Mtives fr Explring Africa made available by sascurriculumpathways.cm (linked belw) Students will be placed in grups f fur, where they will then be given laptps, ipads, r ther technlgical devices that have internet access. Students will g t sascurriculumpathways.cm and use a cmbinatin f 8 different websites/links fr internet research purpses. Other internet surces can be used with teacher s apprval. Research will be prmpted and guided by the Int Africa handut available at the end f this lessn plan. The intentin f this activity is t get students ding internet research t answer histrical questins. Befre students begin wrking, I will discuss examples f bth gd and bad exemplars s that students knw the quality f wrk expected If scafflding is necessary, I will be able t answer students questins and help clarify the assignment thrughut the guided practice I will check fr understanding by making sure that students are cnducting research and answering the questins n their discvery f a sea rute t India. It will als allw students t see causes fr a peak in Eurpe s interest in cntinued verseas explratin and trade. This activity is intended t allw fr student acquisitin f curse cntent thrugh a means ther than lecturing. Students will als be learning research, analytical, and cllabrative skills in

While this activity is relatively straightfrward, students may still struggle with histrical cntext and key histrical figures. If students need assistance, guiding questins and a better explainatin f bth the histrical cntext and specifics pertaining t histrical figures wuld likely help students develp their histrical argument fr r against cntinued verseas cmmerce After 40 minutes f research and grup wrk, each grup will have five minutes t present their research findings. This will allw fr students t share their learning as a means f adjusting and/r re-centering their classmate s histrical understanding. In rder t shw mastery, grups will need t share their cmpleted handuts with ample and accurate infrmatin. Students will spend a few minutes f independent practice by filling ut a table/chart (prvided belw) that will be used thrughut the duratin f the unit t recrd the mtives and impacts f Eurpean explratin. A teacher directed clse t the lessn will review the day s learning and prepare students fr the next lessn n cntinued Eurpean explratin and expansin (this time acrss the Atlantic Ocean). the prcess f increasing cntent knwledge. My initial impressin is that this lessn will nt require a significant amunt f readjustment, if any, as students will be wrking cllabratively in grups. This is bund t aid in the prcess f gaining a histrical understanding f Prtugal s mtives fr explring Africa. Mre knwledgeable thers within the grup will likely be able t prvide cnstant adjusting and re-centering t struggling grup members. The use f a graphic rganizer will help students keep track f their learning thrughut the unit. This particular graphic rganizer will aid in furthering students understanding f cntinuity, change, and cnsequence. This lessn clsure will encurage students reflectin n Eurpe s mtives fr explratin and hw these mtives are transferable frm Africa and the Indian Ocean t the Atlantic Ocean and the Americas.
