2 BETADET S-2, a gentle touch with impressive results BETADET S-2 (INCI name: Lauryl Hydroxysultaine) is an ultra mild co-surfactant for personal care formulations. Hydroxysultaines are highly effective amphoteric surfactants that improve the performance of final cosmetic products. Lauryl Hydroxysultaine is an extremely mild co-surfactant that increases the performance of personal care formulations compared to alkylbetaines and amidopropyl betaines. 3 CHARACTERISTICS BETADET S-2 is recommended as a secondary surfactant for very mild and high foaming products, achieving higher foam volumes than alkyl betaines or alkyl amidopropyl betaines. This product is easier to thicken when combined with SLES, thus reducing the amount of electrolytes needed to obtain a desired viscosity compared to other amphoteric surfactants. One of the main features of BETADET S-2 is the ability to reduce the cloud point of final formulations making them more stable at low temperatures, which helps to obtain clear final stable products. It also shows excellent stability to hard water, improving the behavior of some sensitive anionic surfactants under extreme conditions. Furthermore, BETADET S-2 is stable at extreme ph s thus allowing its use in cosmetics formulations where an alkali (i.e. depilatories) or acid media is necessary. 4 MAIN PROPERTIES In order to compare the properties of BETADET S-2 with other betaines, a Model Formula has been studied with standard levels of anionic surfactant (SLES), non-ionic thickener (CDEA) and the Amphoteric Surfactant as the variable. ph has been adjusted to 6.5 in all cases. Babies, elders, people with sensitive epidermis, all of them need very mild formulations to avoid dryness, itchiness or even rashes on their skin. The mildness of amphoteric surfactants is well known but hydroxysultaines are especially mild to the eyes and skin. Therefore, BETADET S-2 is a good option to formulate a wide variety of very mild end products such as intimate hygiene cleansers or no-tears baby shampoos. Moreover, thanks to its detoxifying properties, it reduces the irritation produced by anionic surfactants. 5 THICKENING ABILITY BETADET S-2 has a great thickening ability in SLES-based rinse-off products and even in other anionic-based formulations. It achieves higher viscosity levels when compared with alkyl betaines, alkyl amidopropyl betaines and alkyl amphodiacetates so less amount of product (or electrolytes) can be used. As seen in the graphic, the enhanced thickening ability of the product in comparison with the other betaines is noticeable in all range of salt evaluated. 6 MAIN PROPERTIES STABILITY BETADET S-2 stabilizes formulations at low temperatures thus helping the formulator to get clear products in rough environments with complex formulations. The cold cloud point test performed over the Model Formula shows a much better turbidity point by cold with BETADET S-2 than the ones containing other types of betaines. EMULSIFYING ABILITY Lauryl hydroxysultaine is capable of emulsifying oils and sebum more thoroughly than other betaines so the washing process becomes more effective. BETADET S-2 avoids the redeposition of hydrophobic substances to the skin so it is also advised for facial cleansing formulations. 7 FOAMING ABILITY BETADET S-2 is an excellent foaming surfactant at different ph s and even at high concentration of cationic ions (Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ). When it is combined with anionic surfactants, all foam characteristics are improved: foam volume, speed and quality. As seen in the graphic where the results of a Ross Miles test are shown, the Model Formula with BETADET S-2 produces higher foam volume with better foam stability. Foam volume (mm) Ref. Foam ability has been determined for the Model Formula containing CAPB/ CDEA or BETADET S-2 and AMIDET N (PEG-4 Rapeseedamide), a Cocamide DEA replacement. As seen in the graphic, the foaming ability of the formulation containing BETADET S-2 and AMIDET N is better than the regular one; foam is produced faster and higher volume is achieved in all time range evaluated.
