Anatomy in Acupuncture Dr. Holmes Keikobad MBBS DPH DIP AC NCCAOM LAC Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery. Diplomate in Public Health. Diplomate in Acupuncture National Board Certified. Licensed Acupuncturist Scope of this discussion is entirely educational. Q. Why should acupuncturists study anatomy? COPYRIGHT ACU-FREE.COM LLC ALL RIGHTS RESERVED A. Mainly to know if some vital structure like a nerve or artery is under or in vicinity of an acu point. Q. Any other reason? A. Traditional Medicine is now seen to have a Western Medical basis. Also, it is conceivable that all States will in future tend to make the Licentiate credential into one of a Doctor, meaning LAc could become DAc, Doctor of Acupuncture. Q. Define anatomy? A. To study the human body. Q. Describe some steps? A. Usually you begin with bones, then go on to muscles, nerves, arteries, veins, ligaments. Lastly you study brain, spinal column, organs. Q. What is the best way to learn anatomy? A. Hands on or with fine images.
Q. So what are we doing now? A. Q. Doing the hands on. The vertical line is the main axis on which the body is structured. The bony part of the body is the skeleton, divided into 2 main types: Axial and Appendicular COPYRIGHT ACU-FREE.COM LLC ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Axial is wrapped around the vertical axis and is composed of: Skull Rib cage Bony spine Appendicular is the rest of the skeleton, namely: Scapula and upper limb Pelvis and lower limb If you stand still and turn left or right you are working the Axial. If you step forwards and walk, jog, run; or stand and grab something, you are working the Appendicular. Axial skeleton has 8 bones and Appendicular, 126, the whole bony structure, 206.
Q. That was great. What do we study now? A. Naming locations. Critical. Here are some important ones you will used all the time: Superior R Lateral Medial Medial means towards the midline Inferior Medial L Lateral Ventral COPYRIGHT ACU-FREE.COM LLC ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Dorsal Anterior Posterior
Q. Where does Anatomy in Acupuncture come in? A. The face below with muscles shows acu points and regional elemental distribution. Next time you work on these areas you can visualize underlying anatomy: GB 14 - element Wood muscle Frontalis Yin Tang - DU channel UB 2 - element Water GB 1 - element Wood muscle Orbicularis oculi ST 2 - element Earth LI 20 - element Metal muscle Orbicularis oris COPYRIGHT ACU-FREE.COM LLC ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
Q. Some more of Anatomy in Acupuncture? A. Nowhere is it more critical than when you are working around the chest. The ever present danger when placing needles there is that you may puncture the pleura covering the lungs causing the dreaded pneumothorax. The image below explains where there is lung tissue as well as where the pleura extends beyond the spread of the lungs. Apex of lungs, careful when needling GB 21 An imperfectly united sternal bone. When needling REN points on sternum use oblique trajectory. Here the lung tissue ceases Here the pleura extends well beyond lungs. The area inside the irregular polygon is the danger zone. COPYRIGHT ACU-FREE.COM LLC ALL RIGHTS RESERVED In this image the danger prone areas are demarcated on the anterior as well as posterior, or on dorsal as well as ventral aspect of the body.
Q. Has anatomy always been studied either hands on or with images? A. Always, actually right from the beginning. We have in this Issue collected some images which give an interesting pictorial aspect of the topic over the centuries. Women in School of Anatomy at YWCA for Motor Corps of National League for Women's Service, New York City Notice the use of charts very much like the ones we are using. On the following pages see more examples.
Anatomical Male Figure Showing Heart, Lungs, and Main Arteries Anatomical study by Leonardo da Vinci 4
William Harvey ( ) Image of veins from Harvey's experiment One of Dr Harvey s experiments to show directionality of venous circulation where it goes from the distal aspects of the body to the proximal organ, the heart which will further circulate it into the lung field to purify it. The importance in acupuncture is that when we bleed small capillaries we almost always bleed the venous type, see arrow Artery Arteriole Capillary Capillary Veinule Capillary network Vein This concludes our discussion on Anatomy in Acupuncture. Keep tuned in for more discussions in coming Issues.
The Feng Shui Doorway Dr. Carol Andrade PhD LAc Feng Shui in a year of great change presents both dangers and opportunities. The earth is in upheaval in both the Eastern and Western forms of prognostication, so what to do in the year of the Dragon? This is a year of culmination, bringing all the threads of your work and life in the past twelve years into clarity, even as upheavals rise to meet you. The earth is not in a happy placement, and therefore can not be counted on to support your plans. As you already see from the storms and unexpected weather, the Earth is in a time of turmoil. This is a year to stay centered in the will of heaven. I am not saying this in a religious way, but instead implying that as events arise, great wisdom attends to those who center themselves in the invisible energy of their highest understanding, and who achieve an overview of evolving situations. This is an excellent year for Healing and as a practitioner you can stand firmly in the knowledge that those who come to you for healing at this time are presenting with the will of heaven. Green and Azure, the most beautiful blue, to the East is always a calm and healing color, but is especially emphasized in this year. Despite the fear mongers in the media do not give your power away to their drumbeat. Instead stay with what you can do within your own life to bring calm, peace and clarity to yourself first and then to those around you. Even if it is the smallest act, the kindest word, the quietest moment, it matters.
Healing with Food Dr. Carol Andrade PhD LAc It is not quite spring, but not quite winter either. In this time of transition when so many people are experiencing summer weather one moment and winter storms the next. Our gratitude for the food we have and the nourishment that we so often take for granted includes the animals, plants and even mineral substances that we consume that are also going through the same changes in weather. Where does the honey bee hide when an unexpected hail storm also comes their way? Hot cups of tea that stave off the chill that is still with us can include ginger lightly grated, ginseng, red date and licorice. All of this warms the stomach and the meridians. Remember that the wind and cold at this time is particularly treacherous as it can bring illnesses even as we begin to respond to the warmth of the sun. Bean soups remain a hearty easy option. Use any beans that you have with some garlic or onion and then if there are new green seasonings or veggies at the market you can add to this greenery to spring up your menu. Bok Choy is particularly good in salads at this time, and almost any salad can be made slightly warm. Just lightly saute basic greens, whether lettuce, cabbage, kale or others in water for just a few minutes and then prepare as you would a regular cold salad. This is the best of two worlds. You get to make your salad, and to heat it too! Salt is the taste of winter and sour the taste of spring. Include both in both your soup and salad, until spring is here to stay.
16 Mountain Once as I climbed up the mountain it chose to speak to me, and said, Why waste your time surmounting me, conquer the steep heights inside you. I said, I would but I don t know where these are. And it said, It is not a matter of where, but how. And since then the mountain speaks to me no more.
