19 Directional Terms Note: the midline is an imaginary vertical line that divides the body into equal left and right sides Superior: nearer the head Inferior: farther away from the head

20 Directional Terms Anterior (ventral): nearer to or in front of the body Posterior (dorsal): nearer to or at the back of the body

21 Directional Terms Medial: closer to the midline of the body Lateral: farther away from the midline of the body

22 Directional Terms Proximal: nearer to the attachment of an extremity (limb) Distal: farther from the attachment of an extremity (limb)

23 Planes & Movements Flexion decrease of the angle Extension increase of the angle if the movement occurs beyond the extended position = hyperextension

24 Planes & Movements Abduction when a body part is moved away from the midline of the body Adduction when a body part is moved toward the midline of the body

25 Planes & Movements Superficial Refers to structures nearer to the skin Deep Refers to structures further away from the skin

27 Orientation and Directional Terms Reclining Position If the body is lying face down, it is in the prone position. If the body is lying face up, it is in the supine position.

30 Anatomical Planes Fixed lines of reference along which the body is often divided or sectioned to facilitate viewing of its structures Allow one to obtain a three-dimensional perspective by studying the body from different views

31 Anatomical Planes Sagittal plane The plane dividing the body into right and left portions Midsagittal or median are names for the plane dividing the body into equal right and left halves
