3 Rationale Students need to understand the structure of the cell in order to fully understand what are bodies are made up of. We are entirely made of cells just like the majority of the other organisms around us. Cells are a building block of living things and are an extremely important topic in life science. 3
4 Cells Cells are the building blocks of many living things. We will study to major types of cells, animal and plant cells. Cells contain many different organelles that have a specific function to help the cell survive. 4

17 Cell Membrane The membrane is responsible for protecting the cell. It is made up of layers of lipids. The membrane also controls the entry and exit of materials from the cell. Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell 17
18 Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum The rough endoplasmic reticulum is covered with ribosomes that synthesize proteins. The endoplasmic reticulum is a surface for chemical activity. Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell 18
19 Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum The smooth ER plays different roles in many cells. It usually is used as a surface for different chemical activity in the cell. Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell 19
20 Golgi Aparatus The golgi aparatus is a stack of membrane bound vessicles that store and release chemicals waiting for transport around the cell. Return to Animal Cell Return to Plant Cell 20
21 Cell Wall The cell wall is a strong barrier around plant cells. The cell wall helps the plant maintain its shape. Return to Plant Cell 21
22 Vacuole Vacuoles are rather large in plant cells and store water, waste and nutrients. The vacuole could also be known as the warehouse of the cell. vacuole Return to Plant Cell 22
23 Chloroplast Chloroplasts are found only in plant cells. They contain chlorophyll responsible for the green color of most plants. The food for a plant is made in the chloroplasts. Return to Plant Cell 23
