Official website: Welcome to the first edition of The Magpie for 2007! There have been changes a plenty over the traditional off-season, and this newsletter is jam packed with all the news you fellow Magpies require to get yourself motivated for the approaching start of the 2007 winter season. CLUB NEWS Senior Coaching changes for 2007 After an extremely successful 2006 season the Magpies are pleased to announce changes involving the Senior Men s & Women s coaching roles for Firstly, Craig Victory has moved into the Senior Men s coaching role for the 2007 season. Craig looks to add coaching success to his impressive list of Club, State & International playing achievements, and given the emerging youth in the 2007 squad the future looks bright. Craig takes over the role from club legend Trevor Cibich, who has recently guided the Premier League Men to Back to Back titles and leaves the squad in good shape through his unique development and succession planning. Fortunately, Trevor s knowledge will still be available to the entire club coaching ranks as he moves into his new role with the PADHC as coaching director & mentor. Craig will be supported in his new role by Garry Szkolic as Premier League Reserve coach and Sean Pearce as assistant coach no doubt he can rely on the experience and knowledge of these respected club people. Similarly, the club is delighted to announce the appointment of Bronte Pickett as Senior Women s coach for the 2007 season. Bronte is also looking to add coaching to her playing success, as she looks to impart her wisdom on the talent in the women s squad. Bronte has a great Hockey pedigree having captained the Magpies & the Suns with distinction collecting a swag of Premierships and 4 West End Medals as HockeySA s Best & Fairest player along the way. Bronte assumes the role from Char Collett who has left the squad in excellent shape after delivering Back to Back Premierships. Char will continue to be seen around the club providing support, along with resuming her own playing career in the soon to be famous Div 6 Women s side. Assisting Bronte in her new role will be Maggie Cox as Premier League Reserve coach and Paul Finnie as assistant coach. Please join me in congratulating 2 home grown Magpie talents in Craig & Bronte on their appointment as Senior playing coaches, as we wish them every success in ensuring the emerging era of Magpie talent is as successful as the last. 1!-12345"-*"!! 2 Commencement of pre-season training Training has either commenced or is imminent for all senior grades! Details as follows: Premier League Men Squad: Thursday 15th February 6.30pm - Snake Pit Tuesday 20nd February 6.30pm - Snake Pit Thursday 22nd February 6.30pm - Snake Pit Tuesday 27th February 6.30pm - Snake Pit Thursday 1st March 6.30pm PADHC Ph: Craig Victory or Garry Szkolic Premier League Women Squad: Pre-season training has commenced 6.30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays at John Hart Reserve. Ph: Bronte Pickett or Maggie Cox All other Senior Grades training: Yes - it s the first Thursday in March and that means that training starts for all the other grades. Training times are 7.30 to 9.00 PM at John Hart Reserve. Men - D3, D4, D5, D6, Vets With continued growth this year we might even manage 2 Div 6 teams and 2 Veterans teams. Women - D3, D4, D6, Vets Yes that s right a Division 6 team - who have already had a training "run"! We have a spot in a team for everyone. 3 Changes to Leadership and Management Committee for 2007 After the club AGM in December 2006 the following nominations were accepted and it is with pleasure that the PADHC committee for 2007 can be announced as follows: President: Vice President: Treasurer: Secretary: Assistant Secretary: Men s Senior Coach: Women s Senior Coach: Bar Manager: Paul Beckmann Trevor Cibich Mike Johnston Peter Byrne Mark Victory Craig Victory Paul Finnie Sarah Harrison Jeff Wait Craig Victory Bronte Pickett Darren Roberts After some re-shuffling, Mike Johnston has stepped into the Treasury position to fill the very large shoes left by John Stephen, leaving Paul Beckmann to take on the Presidents role for This move also allows Johnno to qualify for the infamous Div 6 Men Dead Kennedy s as a past President! Whilst the club can look forward to some new faces & fresh ideas - the outstanding service provided on the Management Committee by John & Sue Stephen in their roles in Finance & Hockey Operations respectively over the past years cannot go un-noticed. From all at the club we thank you for your past contributions and look forward to still seeing you around the club. Junior Committee members required The club is looking for interested Parents and supporters to assist with co-ordination of junior activities through the PADHC Junior Committee looks like being a busy year for the Junior Magpies and the Committee s aim is to promote the development of our future stars through fundraising, promotion & volunteer work. Port Adelaide to host AHL Matches Clear your schedule on Sunday the 18 th of March 2007 as the Port Adelaide Hockey Club hosts a Round of the AHL! This is indeed a proud moment for the Ground re-development as these will be the first AHL games hosted by Port Adelaide in 10 years. 6 Registration of interest for AHL Supporters Bus to Berri Expressions of interest are being called for from club members/supporters interested in travelling to Berri on Saturday the 17 th March to support the Hotshots & Suns via a club chartered Mini Bus. If this sounds like a good plan for you then please Pete Byrne secretary@padhc.com.au to get your name on the list ASAP. Upcoming Working Bee in preparation for AHL + Season Opening With our club being on show to the rest of South Australia on the 18 th March we would like the place looking immaculate and to achieve this your club requires your help! There have been 2 working bee s this year and they have been poorly attended to say the least - granted one of the days maxed at 42 degrees, however the work cannot continue to be left to the same small group of dedicated people. If jobs cannot be done by club members then expect to see an increase in fees as the work will be sub-contracted out to paid labour. Even if you can only make it down for an hour or so every little bit helps. Please make yourself available when notice of the next working bee is sent out. KS & Maggie engagement Congratulations to club stalwarts Kris KS Schiller & Maggie Mags Cox on the announcement of their recent engagement well done guys! A nicer couple you d be lucky to come across. Best of luck for your future together from all at the PADHC. Dead Kennedy s challenge With the recent success of the Div 6 Dead Kennedy s Men s team it appears they are about to be issued a challenge from the Women s side of the club with the formation of a ladies Div. 6 side. A smorgasbord of female talent has been assembled and the old blokes will need to be on their game if they want to keep their record as the best Div 6 side in the land! A nickname for the ladies side has not yet been assigned, but stay tuned Club Web-site Please don t forget to check for all the latest club news the site is updated regularly and has a wealth of information on the club and its proud history. Also, don t forget to support our sponsors whenever possible. Thursday night selection Counter Meals & members draw Beginning Thursday night April 12 Counter Meals will be available at the club after training. It s a good opportunity to sit down with your team mates over a meal and ponder selection, current affairs, world events etc. etc. Also don t forget there is a jackpotting members draw held at 8.30PM you must be present to collect just ask Matty Simounds or Michael Bevan who had the misfortune of timing their exit 5 minutes too early last season!!"!"#! $!%&! ' Currently planned Social / Event Calendar for 2007 Please keep the following dates free in your Calendar Saturday night happy hours: Every Saturday night this season there will be happy hour at the club from 6.30 til 7.30pm, so why not enjoy the benefit of cheap drinks/fine company/discuss the day s events (both hockey and non-hockey) to start your evening? In addition each grade that plays that Saturday will have a player of the match nominated by their team coach/manager, that person will be entitled to a free drink of their choice that night at the bar - a good opportunity to get-together and socialise with your club mates/opposition/umpires/etc Planned Social Events at the Club This Season: Put these events in your diaries/on your fridges, there will be teas available at the club from pm on each of these nights prior to the event (in addition of course to the above-mentioned happy hours!) Saturday April 14: Season Opener: Home games that day for the Premier League/Reserve men and women will be followed by a Happy 2 Hours (thanks Fatman) from 6.30pm, teas, announcement of that day s player of the match then the usual music/socialising/etc. Saturday May 26: McGrath/Phillips Trophy Day/Band Night: Home games that day between Woodville/Port for McGrath/Phillips trophy will be followed by Happy 2 Hours, teas from 6.30pm, then be entertained by our very own Tammie Wightman fronting The Casual Six from 8.30pm for a mix of hits to suit all ages Saturday July 28: Auction Night: Start getting items together to donate to this always popular night, following home Premier League/Reserves games versus recent fierce rivals Seacliff, teas/happy hour from 6.30pm, auction commencing 7.30pm. Saturday September 9: Magpie Medal Night: Teas/happy hour at the club from 6.30pm followed by the medal count for all senior grades.
