1. The Duke of Edinburgh's award Anticipate a. Go to dofe.org to find information about The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Focus on it creation, target and programme.

1. The Duke of Edinburgh's award Anticipate b. Make a brief oral presentation of the DofE with the information you collected.

1. The Duke of Edinburgh's award The Duke of Edinburgh s Award (commonly abbreviated DofE), is a youth awards programme created in the United Kingdom in 1956 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The awards recognise teenagers and young adults for completing a series of self-improvement exercises.

1. The Duke of Edinburgh's award The Duke of Edinburgh s Award programmes take between one to four years to complete, and they must be completed by the participant s twenty-fifth birthday. There are around 300,000 participants annually. The programmes are at three progressive levels which, if successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh s Award.

1. The Duke of Edinburgh's award With help from adult Leaders, participants select and set objectives in each of the following areas: Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community. Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities. Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests. Expedition: planning, training for adventurous journey in the UK or abroad. and completion of an At Gold level, participants must do an additional fifth Residential section, which involves staying and working away from home doing a shared activity.

1. The Duke of Edinburgh's award Read and speak c. Read both stories.

Success stories Aswad used to spend his time at home on the computer or just hanging about on street corners until the late hours. He was on the fringes of friendships and had never been involved with youth activities until he was introduced by a friend to his local DofE group.

Success stories Aswad is currently completing his Basic Expedition Leader Award. He is aiming to become one of the few Asian Mountain Leaders in his region within the next few years as well as lead a DofE group. He has dedicated most of his free time to help out with younger groups on expedition and has recruited his sisters, brother and friends to complete their DofE programmes.

Success stories ''I was doing nothing useful or anything that was benefiting the community but the DofE has helped me to work in the community as well as getting a job.''

Success stories Danielle had already started her Gold DofE when she became involved in drugs. Arrested one night in a night club, she was charged with possession, tried and sentenced to two years imprisonment. She decided to complete her Gold DofE.This became an incredible story of perseverance, persistence and courage.

Success stories Danni was granted licence to leave prison weekly and speak to other teenagers about the dangers of drug abuse. Her DofE involvement helped her gain a college place to read psychology. Twelve years on, Danni has a degree and a masters degree. She now mentors young offenders and is a full-time youth worker, running the DofE in two youth clubs.

Success stories I can honestly say that the DofE saved my life when I was imprisoned. It s turned my life around and I m just so grateful that I am now able to influence young people to do something positive with their lives.

1. The Duke of Edinburgh's award Read and speak d. Explain the benefits of the DofE for the two people.

1. The Duke of Edinburgh's award Discuss e. Would you run the Duke of Edinburgh's Award? Why or why not?

2. A visit of charity Read and speak a. Read the text and find information about: Marian, the place, her mission, and her motives. Give keywords only.

2. A visit of charity It was mid-morning a very cold, bright day. Holding a potted plant before her, a girl of fourteen jumped off the bus in front of the Old Ladies Home, on the outskirts of town. As she walked vaguely up the steps she shifted the small pot from hand to hand; then she had to set it down and remove her mittens before she could open the heavy door.

2. A visit of charity I m a Campfire Girl I have to pay a visit to some old lady, she told the nurse at the desk. This was a woman in a white uniform who looked as if she were cold; she had close-cut hair which stood up on the very top of her head exactly like a sea wave. Marian, the little girl, did not tell her that this visit would give her a minimum of only three points in her score.

2. A visit of charity Acquainted with any of our residents? asked the nurse. She lifted one eyebrow and spoke like a man. With any old ladies? No but that is, any of them will do, Marian stammered. With her free hand she pushed her hair behind her ears, as she did when it was time to study Science.

2. A visit of charity The nurse shrugged and rose. You have a nice multiflora cineraria there, she remarked as she walked ahead down the hall of closed doors to pick out an old lady. Eudora Welty, A Visit of Charity, 1941

2. A visit of charity Read and speak b. Explain Marian's mission.

2. A visit of charity Read and speak c. To what extent is she keen on her mission?

4. The radio programme Prepare your Task Roleplay: A radio programme is organized about ''Youth and volunteering: a real motivation?'' You are assigned a role among: Aswad: He is enthusiastic and tries to convince young people to volunteer. Danni: She thinks that volunteering leads to a positive selftransformation. Phoebe: A scout who hates scouting. She is a fashionista who prefers going shopping with her friends.
