1 OCTOBER 2017 DERBY MIDDLE SCHOOL BULLDOG CONNECTION Message from the Principal: Drop Off and Pick up I'd like to thank everyone for a successful first few weeks of school. By and large morning drop off has gone very well and everyone has settled into a routine. I thought I'd take this opportunity to share some tips that will make things flow even more smoothly for everyone. All left turns from south bound Woodlawn are prohibited by the sign on the west side of the street from 8:00-9:30. South bound Woodlawn traffic should turn left at Madison and drop off in the Panther Stadium lot. See DMS Traffic Plan. Panther Stadium lot traffic is welcome to drop off at the crosswalk just east of the Media Center or they may come up the south ramp and drop in the north bound lane adjacent to the building. Traffic coming up the ramp is restricted to right turns only in order to avoid merging streams of traffic in the gym parking lot. Please take care when turning right onto Woodlawn that students have cleared the crosswalk and the signal has returned to green. The building opens at 8:05 and class starts at 8:15. Early drop-off and breakfast start at 7:50. This is critically important as we do not have adequate staff to supervise students prior to 7:50. In the event of inclimate weather all students will be able to enter the building at 7:50 and no earlier. If your student needs to arrive before 7:50, the DRC has a before and after school program. Students who are participating in before school clubs and activities will be allowed to enter the building by the teacher who sponsors that activity. All after-school pick-up is in the Panther Stadium lot. We ask that students be picked up south of the middle set of steps. Picking up at the north end of the parking lot causes traffic to back up on Madison. Students are not allowed to use the exit from the north wing (B/G halls) in order facilitate pick-up at the southern half of the parking lot. Derby Middle School 801 E. 2 Bike racks are located at the northeast, northwest and southwest corners of campus. Currently the northwest racks are underutilized and the others are quite full. Students walking from the neighborhoods south of campus should use the Woodlawn sidewalk and not walk up Bulldog Boulevard (which is between the baseball field and tennis courts), This will ensure they have access to crosswalks when crossing traffic. Traffic from north of campus should drop off in Panther Stadium lot by the Media Center and traffic from south of campus should drop off behind the gyms. Please do not drop students off before 7:50. Sincerely, Mr. Shipley Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences Conferences will be held on Oct. 24 th and Oct. 26 th. Scheduling information will be sent home with students on Oct. 6 th. You may either return the slip by Oct. 12 th OR schedule a conference through Skyward. Each student will be preparing a portfolio of artifacts that they will share with you and their homeroom teacher. After the homeroom portion families may visit teachers on a drop-in basis. Report cards will be available in Skyward only, hard copies will not be printed. Attendance If your student will be absent or tardy for school, please call the attendance line and leave a message with the following information: Student s name (spelling if needed) Your Name and relationship to student Reason for the absence Check outs during school hours must be done thru the front office. Please bring your photo ID. Checkouts between 11:00 and 12:30 are discouraged due to our lunch schedule and may take longer than normal. Page 2 of 6

Student Resources TUTORING We will have Power Hour (tutoring) in the mornings and afterschool. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity for assistance with assignments.

The schedule for power hour is as follows, beginning on Sept 6 th : 7:20-7:50 Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri 3:30-4:30 Mon, Wed Supports for our Military Connected Families: This year Derby School District is fortunate to be selected by McConnell AFB to receive the support of Child and Youth Behavioral Military Family Life Counselors at select schools. The CYB-MFLC will provide non-medical, short-term counseling (individual and small group) for our military connected students facing unique challenges, such as school adjustment issues, deployment and reunion adjustments, parent-child communication, etc. These services are offered for students with one or more parents who are current active duty military or an active member of the National Guard, Reserves, or any other branch of service. For additional information, please contact our School Social Worker, Anne Lee, at or alee@usd260.com. It is important to make sure your student understands the importance of good attendance. Here is some helpful information to keep your child on track in middle school. Make going to school everyday an expectation. Attendance should be seen as a priority. Help your student set up and maintain a daily routine. Avoid scheduling dental and medical appointments during school. Don t let your child stay home unless truly sick. Complaints of headaches or stomach aches maybe signs of anxiety. Find out if your student feels engaged in classes and feels safe in school. Stay on top of your child s academic progress. Make sure teachers are able to contact you. Encourage meaningful after school activities. Communicate with the school. o Know the attendance policy. Page 3 of 6

It will be open in the DMS media center during parent/teacher conferences on October 24 th and 26 th. Students will also be able to purchase from the book fair, during the day, October 23 rd -25 th. DO NOT attempt to cross in front of oncoming cars, and please do not reach out and touch cars as you are crossing or they are passing by. If they have not, get the vaccine and turn in documentation ASAP. All students that remain noncompliant will be excluded from school. Why does my child need a flu vaccine? There are many reasons to get your child a flu vaccine: A flu shot can keep your child from getting sick with flu. Influenza can be more serious than the common cold. It can lead to serious complications, including hospitalization or death. Children, especially school-aged children, are more likely to catch the flu. Millions of children get sick with flu every season. A typical flu illness can mean missing a week or more of school. Once infected, children can spread the flu to parents and siblings, other family members, and friends. Vaccinating your child protects people around them (like grandparents, babies or anyone with longterm health problems) who are more vulnerable to flu. Flu vaccine is not perfect. Some vaccinated people may still get sick, but if they do, flu vaccine may make their illness milder. Flu vaccines are among the safest medical products in use. Hundreds of millions of people have safely gotten flu vaccines for more than 50 years. There may be mild side effects from getting vaccinated, but these are so much less of a problem than getting sick with the flu!
