2 High selectivity nd sfety The ctive substnce of Tutvir is Phthorime operculell grnulovirus (PhopGV) tht ws selected from wild Potto tuber moth (PTM) popultion. These viruses belong to the fmily of insect pthogen bculoviruses tht occur nturlly in lepidoptern species. Tutvir cuses no phytotoxic symptoms on plnts fter ppliction. The formultion only contins food grde dditives; therefore the use of Tutvir does not leve ny chemicl residues, mking it suitble for low residue or orgnic food production. No mximum residue levels (MRLs) re defi ned for Tutvir. The product is free of geneticlly modifi ed orgnisms. Bculoviruses re sfe nd cuse no hzrds to humn helth (OECD Consensus pper, 2002). No side effects Tutvir preserves nturl ntgonists due to its specifi c host rnge. Aqutic species, birds, benefi cil insects, mmmls nd bees re not ffected. Comptibility Tutvir is comptible with most griculturl chemicls. A ph level between 5 nd 8.5 in the tnk mix with other products hs to be respected. Otherwise the protective protein cpsule will be destroyed nd the ctive substnce inctivted. Avoid tnk mixes with copper products. Temporrily sub-optiml storge conditions during trnsport or t the end-user my be ccepted for short period of time. At 18 C, the product remins liquid nd cn be immeditely used for sprying without unfreezing. 3 Mode of ction Grnuloviruses re encpsulted within protein occlusion body, which protects the virus from destructive environmentl infl uences (e.g. UV rdition). The size of single virus prticle is not bigger thn 400 nm. Young lrve tht re ctively moving nd feeding on leves, stems or fruits will ingest the virus tht ws spryed onto the plnt surfce. Following ingestion, the virus prticles enter the lrvl midgut, where the protein cpsules dissolve due to the high ph level (ph higher thn 10). Within 2 4 dys, the virus infests most orgns of the host nd the lrv stops feeding. Upon deth, the lrvl body liquefi es nd releses millions of new virus prticles into the environment, infecting other lrve. Under lbortory conditions, only 1 ingested virus prticle is suffi - cient to kill fi rst instr lrv. Lter instrs (older thn L3) re not instntly killed nd my therefore cuse further dmge before getting killed (which is often refl ected by superfi cil or deeper stopped dmge in the fruit). The virus infection my lso be trnsferred to the next genertion, where it cn brek out due to wekness or stress nd kill the lrv, thus providing excellent popultion control. 4 Informtion bout the pest Geogrphicl distribution of Tut bsolut Tut bsolut is very destructive nd hrd to control pest within its nturl hbitt. Originting in South Americ, it ws found in Spin in 2006 nd hs been spreding throughout the Mediterrnen region but lso continentl Europe, the Middle Est nd Afric. Becuse of continuous use of pesticides with the sme mode of ction nd missing resistnce mngement, mny Tut bsolut popultions re resistnt to wide rry of pesticides, both chemicl nd biologicl. Tut bsolut is most destructive on Tomto, but its host rnge includes solnceous species such s eggplnt, peppers, tobcco, potto nd mny more. After the lrve hve fully developed, they pupte in the soil t depth of up to 10 cm. 5 Dmge pttern Tut bsolut lrve prefer feeding on young leves. They my lso feed on stlks, picl buds nd undeveloped fruit. The lrve feed singly nd enter the leve where they form mines, feeding on the mesophyll but leving the epidermis intct. Lrve will lso enter stlks, usully t nodes, which leds to gret dmge. When feeding on fruit, feeding dmge often leds to secondry infection with pthogens. Dmge cn be up to 100 % when not properly controlled. Tut bsolut re ctive during the night nd twilight. Generl instructions Tutvir ppliction with the right timing Like ll grnulovirus products, Tutvir is not knock-down product nd it will tke few dys to kill the lrve due to its mode of ction. The grnuloviruses, the ctive ingredient of Tutvir, re infecting the TLM lrve fter ingestion through the midgut. Timing of the ppliction is therefore very crucil in order to hve good control, even more s TLM lrve re very cryptic nd quickly penetrte into the leves. Strt ppliction s soon s the fi rst dult moth hs been monitored. Tutvir is n excellent popultion control tool. Therefore we recommend focusing the ppliction of Tutvir lredy t the beginning of the TLM infesttion, so tht the popultion control effect cn be crried over the entire crop period. As viruses re sensitive to UV rdition, sprys must be repeted t n intervl of 6 8 dys of full sunshine to ssure constnt coverge (2 prtly sunny dys re equl to one sunny dy) during the lrvl htching period. Appliction in the lte fternoon or erly evening hours is recommended. Monitoring of TLM tricky thing Monitoring of the moth fl ights using pheromone trps helps to record the increse of TLM popultion nd potentil infesttion with TLM. First ppliction of Tutvir hs to be positioned one week fter the fi rst pek of moth ctches. Trp ctches cn vry, depending on the pheromone qulity, positioning of the trps nd lso on wether conditions. No or low records of ctches in pheromone trps do not defi nitively correlte with low pest infesttion. Often only low but constnt pressure cn be recorded without recognizble peks. In such cse informtion on crop stge together with historicl dt on the pest development in the specifi c crops in the re my help to position the right timing of Tutvir ppliction. Use in Integrted Pest Mngement Tutvir cn successfully be used s prt of n Integrted Pest Mngement (IPM) progrm, which cn lso include chemicl nd culturl prctices preventing economic pest dmge. IPM principles nd prctices include fi eld screening nd monitoring systems (phero mone trps), correct trget pest identifi ction, popultion monitoring, rottion of insecticides with different modes of ction, nd treting when trget pest popultions rech loclly determined threshold levels. Plese note: Pheromone trps for TLM monitoring in res under mting disruption will not work properly. They need to be plced in plots without mting disruption in the neighbourhood. Use in orgnic production The use of bculoviruses complies with the EU Regultion 834/2007 for orgnic frming. Resistnce mngement Tut bsolut hs developed widespred resistnce nd crossresistnce to orgnophosphtes, synthetic pyrethroids, dimides nd other types of insecticides. To effectively control Tut bsolut nd to dely development of resistnt popultions to new ctive substnces, spry progrm including the most effi ccious insecticides nd lternting modes of ction ginst consecutive pest genertions is recommended.
