2 Bcillus thuringiensis (Bt) Bcillus thuringiensis is nturlly occurring, soil-dwelling, Grm-positive bcterium. During sporultion it produces trnslucent crystl protein, the ctive ingredient of Bt-bsed formulted products. Bt forms sexul reproductive spores, which enble it to survive under dverse climtic conditions. Under fvourble conditions spores cn germinte. At sporultion, Bt lso forms inclusion bodies (crystl protein).

3 Bt serovr kurstki (Btk) Historicl bckground The bility of Bt to control pest insect lrve ws discovered more thn 9 yers go. However, it ws first commercilly used only in the 194 s nd for mny yers its development hs been hmpered by generl lck of knowledge on Bt genetics nd mode of ction. Bcillus thuringiensis serovr kurstki ws discovered in the lte 196 s. This serovr is considerbly more effective ginst cterpillrs.

5 Btk strin EG 2348 Bt strin EG 2348 ws creted through process clled (trns)conjugtion, phenomenon known to occur in nture nd considered nlogous to hybridiztion in higher orgnisms. Two or more subspecies of Bt re mixed together in wy tht fcilittes the formtion of new strins from which individuls with desirble qulities from both prents my be selected. This method of mnufcturing is ccepted in orgnic production systems. Btk strin EG 2348 is therefore not geneticlly modified.

6 Btk strin EG 2348 Btk strin EG 2348 produces different Cry toxins (Cry 1A, 1Ac, nd 2A toxins), which re responsible of its insecticidl ctivity nd enhnced efficcy ginst wide rnge of Lepidoptern pests, noctuid moths included. In 22 Intrchem Bio Interntionl S.A. (Genev, CH) nd Ecogen Inc. (USA) entered into License Agreement for the exclusive production nd distribution of Btk strin EG Annex I inclusion is expected in Jnury 29 (on 1-11 July 28, SCoFCAH gve fvourble opinion for the inclusion of Btk strin EG 2348 into Annex I of Directive 91/414/EEC).

7 Btk strin EG 2348 In order to obtin optimum field performnce nd highest efficcy of the Btk strin EG2348 ginst different trget insects nd on different crops, Intrchem developed 3 products, Lepinox Plus Rpx Wormox which differ in formultion type nd concentrtion of ctive ingredient. Mnufcturing occurs in outsourcing under the supervision of Intrchem Production S.r.l. (Bergmo, IT). Btk strin EG 2348-bsed products re registered in Itly, Spin, Greece, Serbi, Bulgri, nd registrtion is pending in Turkey nd Morocco.

Both its high concentrtion of.i.
