As an affiliation of Lions clubs, Leo clubs are established with the approval and guidance of a Lions club sponsor. By sponsoring a Leo club, Lions have a positive influence on today s youth and young adults, giving them a strong foundation as they learn the meaning of leadership and service. HISTORY OF LEOISM Coach Jim Graver started the Leo ball rolling in 1957 and chances are that ball was a baseball. Graver was the baseball coach of the Abington High School in Pennsylvania, USA and an active member of the Glenside Lions Club. With the help from fellow Lion, William Ernest, the first Leo Club, the Abington High School Leo Club, was chartered on December 5, Leo Club of acronym - Leadership, Equality, Opportunity - and they chose their school colors, maroon and gold to serve as the Leo club. Later, Equality was changed to Experience. In October 1967, the board of directors of Lions Clubs International (LCI) adopted the Leo Club Program as an official program of the association. By that time the program had grown to over 200 clubs in 18 countries and become an official youth program of LCI. In the following year, the Leo program spread in 48 countries with 918 clubs by the end of The Leo Club program has been growing strong for over 50 years. Community service remains the cornerstone of the program. Like their Lion counterparts, Leo club members enjoy serving their neighbors and watching positive results unfold. The stated purpose of Leo Club is - To promote service activities among the youth of the community which will develop the individual qualities of leadership, Experience and Opportunity. To unite its members in friendship, fellowship and mutual understanding. There are two club tracks in the Leo Club program. Alpha & Omega. Designed for youth between the ages of 12 and 18, this track focuses on the individual and social development of teens and pre-teens. Youth who join Alpha clubs have fun, make new friends and experience the rewards of serving others. Designed for youth between the ages of 18 and 30, this track focuses on the personal and professional development of young adults. Omega clubs help members further develop their leadership skills and prepare them for a lifetime of community involvement and contribution to society. The Leo Club program s maximum age of membership is 30 years of age, though it is as the discretion the Lions district to enforce the younger upper-age limits for Omega Leo Clubs. There are no major differences in the operations or logistics of Alpha and Omega Leo Clubs.
