2 UCSF TEMPORAL BONE SURGICAL DISSECTION COURSE Robert A Schindler Surgical Skills Classroom at Mission Center, CA December 7-8, 2012 A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the temporal bone is critical to safe ear surgery. This is especially important in today's practice as new surgical techniques and technologies are being introduced. The goal of this course is to provide the practicing Otolaryngologist with an opportunity for detailed temporal bone dissection, focusing on several common surgical procedures. Middle ear procedures, such as, tympanoplasty, ossiculoplasty, and stapedectomy will be reviewed. Learning of temporal bone and related skull base anatomy will be reinforced through surgical dissection. A distinguished faculty will deliver lectures and lead discussions. There will be ample time for questions and answers with the faculty. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own cases for discussion. TARGET AUDIENCE This course is intended for practicing otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and nurses who wish to improve their understanding of temporal bone anatomy and surgical dissection techniques. The objectives of the course are to: Improve competence of temporal anatomy through dissection exercises. Review essential surgical topics in otology, neurotology, and skull base surgery including mastoidectomy techniques, facial nerve decompression, and ossicular chain reconstruction Upon completion of the course, participants will have improved skills and strategies to: Identify how the facial nerve transects the temporal bone and its relationship to other important structures within the ear; Locate key anatomical landmarks during mastoid surgery, including the middle fossa togmen, sigmoid sinus, facial nerve, semicircular canals, and ossicles; Reconstruct the ossicular chain. ACCREDITATION The University of California, School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. UCSF designates this live activity for a maximum of 25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This CME activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency.
