Topics to be covered include: Healthy team dynamics The IEP page by page Tips for being your child s #1 fan & advocate These topics and more will be addressed in this comprehensive training that looks at the purpose, process, and development of an IEP. 2 December 12, 2014 Bi-Weekly Newsletter Volume 3, Edition 7 Middle School Swim Night By Jan Sykes ASL Assessment: In Development By Jonathan Myers Under the guidance and ongoing support from the Effective Behavioral and Instructional Support Systems, EBISS, program we are currently working on developing and implementation of a new assessment. This assessment will look at students language skills beyond writing and reading. Namely, we will be looking at our student s ability to communicate and to understand American Sign Language. Currently this assessment is in the exploration stages and will be further developed and formalized in due time. A few selected students are being involved in this exploration stage and as we expand this in the future, this assessment will be included in conjunction with the other assessments to further develop and support students language skills. The team comprise of four players and one unofficial back up player. OSD Panther Produce s New Greenhouse By Christine Bartell Our new greenhouse is finished, the organic soil is in place and the lettuce starts planted! This week, we put in the drip irrigation system. OSD Panther Produce invites you to stop by and take a look at our new greenhouse! The players from back left to right are Daniela Chavez- Camarena (Sr. 4 years with DAB), Kaelyn Cartwright (Sr. 3 years with DAB), Hunter Morelli (Sr. 4 years with DAB, and Carina Dominguez (So. 2 years with DAB). In the front row sitting is Coach Mr. A. Sawuka. OSD Panther Produce Team & Lettuce inside our new greenhouse. To our reader, OSD is honored to host 2015 West Regional Academic Bowl. So, we players are working hard to represent the OSD and the deaf community well. We are inviting more volunteers and well-wishers to come, to support and enjoy the competition in mid-february. 4 December 12, 2014 Bi-Weekly Newsletter Volume 3, Edition 7 Athletics Middle School Girls Basketball OSU Women s Basketball Invite By Matt Boyd Oregon State University women's basketball team invited over 40 elementary/middle schools to come and watch them take on the University of Idaho today (12/4.) Our middle school girls basketball team accepted the invite and had a great time - learning about the game, watching college players, and meeting some OSU players! OSD Girls and WSD Girls in Overtime The girl s game went into 4 overtimes, yes, FOUR overtimes! Both sides played their hearts out, trading leads throughout the entire game. OSD ended up having to play catch up in the first 3 overtimes to survive - finally unable to do so in the 4th overtime. WSD girls won, The boy s game was a low scoring affair, trading lead through the game. Both sides played aggressively, with WSD boys getting the final say at the end with a score of Congratulations to both WSD and OSD for a pair of AWESOME games! Scoring summary: OSD MS Girls Basketball Team at Gill Coliseum at OSU. THANK YOU OSU for a great time! High School Basketball By Matt Boyd What a game!!! Holy cow!!! Those of you who went to the OSD vs. WSD basketball game today (12/9) were in for a treat! The Friends of OSD Fundraiser By FOSD (Editor s Note The flyer for this event is available at the end of the newsletter.) The Friends of OSD fundraiser at Vine Gogh Artists Studio in the Sellwood area of Portland is so much fun! The date is Saturday, January 24, Don't wait too long to buy your tickets because there are a limited number of seats available. Plan to arrive at Vine Gogh minutes before 1:00 to check in, buy a beverage, and get set up. Directions to Vine Gogh can be found on their web site: You will follow step-by-step instructions by an artist as you paint "Multnomah Falls". An ASL interpreter will interpret for the artist. Beverages are available for purchase. Tickets are $40 each, and must be purchased online. 50% of the proceeds going directly to Friends of OSD to enhance learning opportunities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Gallaudet Academic Bowl Volunteers Wanted By Jonathan Myers I am coordinating the Gallaudet Academic Bowl event that OSD will be hosting in February. We will be hosting 18 teams for a total of approximately 90 students and 30 coaches & support staff. We will need volunteers to help and facilitate this event, which will occur when school is out of session. Volunteers will do some of the following: - Moderate the competition - Handle students responses - Event Support / Security - Hospitality - And more If you are interested in volunteering please let me know.
